MLB Slugfest

MLB Slugfest

Article posted on slashdot about some unused audio files for MLB Slugfest, an early 2000s arcade style game.
"Enjoying some smoked whale meat up here in the booth today...")
"Ah, baseball on a sunny afternoon. Is there anything better? We've been talking about breaking pop bottles with rocks."
I could hear Bob Uecker saying these things and it cracked me up. "Just a bit outside"

Re: MLB Slugfest

I have an old cheat code book for some PSP (god that name brings back memories lol) and PS2 games from the mid-2000s, and that game was definitely in that book. Definitely sounds VERY familiar

Re: Re: MLB Slugfest

It was made by Midway, as they were trying to expand their sports brand from NBA Jam to game like NFL Blitz, NHL Open Ice, and MLB Slugfest. Fun games back in the day. I miss these old arcade sports titles.

Re: MLB Slugfest

MLB Slugfest was the most fun baseball game I ever played. You could swing and punch the ball out of a fielder's hands instead of getting tagged out, jump 10 feet in the air to rob a home run, and if you intentionally beaned a batter on the other team on their legs, it would make them slow the rest of the game. Amazing.

Re: Re: MLB Slugfest

I may be wrong but didn't they also have a hockey game where there were no rules and it was basically any thing goes ? I think it was called nhl hitz ?

Re: MLB Slugfest

Yup NHL Hitz was a fun game...I think that's what the one poster meant instead of 'Open Ice'

NHL Hitz, NFL Blitz, NBA Jam and MLB Slugfest - still got them downstairs lol

Re: Re: MLB Slugfest

If you really want to go to extremes , check out a game called Mutant League Football , land mines on the field . Talk about a hand off on the goal line lol .

Re: MLB Slugfest

Personally, my favorite baseball video game was MLB The Show 2007. I know that franchise is still going as of 2025, but while I do like the 2024 game (cant get 2025 due to being on an old gen console), 2007 will always have a special place in my heart. Same with MVP Baseball 2005. Reason those two are my all time favorites is simply that they were the first MLB games ever to enter my game collection

Oh, and also they both had something modern MLB games lack: hall of fame players that could be used in ANY single player mode once unlocked, rather than just the live service mode (Diamond Dynasty, which is MLB The Show's equivalent to Madden's Ultimate Team and WWE 2K's Faction Wars modes, plus whatever NBA 2K and any other major league sports games have)

Re: Re: MLB Slugfest

For me It was Baseball Stars on NES and MVP Baseball 2005 Last MLB game by EA Sports with Man Ram on the cover. By far these games had awesome game controls...

Re: MLB Slugfest

And the graphics for MVP 2005 were very respectable for a mid-2000s PS2 game as well. Definitely looked better than some other games at the time

Re: Re: MLB Slugfest

2005 was epic because MVP was awesome, Madden was maybe its best ever, and NFL 2K was also amazing.

Of the modern era, 2016 felt like a golden year, Madden was solid, The Show was good, and NBA 2K was great. Since then, they've all shat the bed. The Show is ruined for me right now because the CPU can't hit. You just go up and in with heat, down and away off-speed, no contest even on Legend.

Re: MLB Slugfest

In 2024's road to the show mode, I've got a 99 overall SP/CF who holds the single season HR record (82 in one season during the 2030s, cant remember exactly which year), gotten to over 3k strikeouts (including two separate seasons with over 300) and 700 HRs plus almost 200 wins at only 32 years old, and gotten several MVPs and Cy Youngs, many of which came in the same season as each other

Oh, and btw this is a knuckleballer/power skill set, took me at least the first 8 seasons just to get my 2nd pitch's speed (which is a 4 seam FB, the knuckleballer skill set locks you with a knuckleball as your primary pitch) to mid-90s MPH

Needless to say, this version of RTTS is ridiculously easy compared to what I remember from the early iterations of the franchise

Oh, and i almost forgot to mention that I am not even playing most of the games. I only play the ones that are important in my opinion. Like key games against rivals or other contenders, and of course the playoffs. Simming most of the games is giving me much of those ridiculously unrealistic stats, and if i was playing them all it would be like if Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, Nolan Ryan, and Cy Young got smushed into the body of Shohei Ohtani to create easily the best player of all time worldwide
