Player ranking
Player ranking
What if any does the ranking have on the overall stats that they might put up during any season? Does a lower ranking cause the player to perform different then if they had been ranked higher? Doesnt the stats that each player put up during their playing time create a ranking in itself. I know this might be over simplification , guess my question does a high rank ensure that player will have more impact on a teams overall record? If so what is the reasoning? Could it be the higher the rank the more often the player is chosen from the player pool? Just curious.
Re: Player ranking
My understanding is that for baseball, rank doesn't impact stats, it just helps organize and quickly evaluate who has better real (not compiled) stats compared to the rest of the league.
Offense Rank is based on some combination of avg, OBP, and OPS. Defense Rank is based on some combination of FLD % and DW. Better rank players are more likely to play better, but you can make your own determinations based on your preferences or what you've seen work.

Re: Re: Player ranking
@LilMagoo my experience in baseball is that a high rank in pitching does guarantee some success. If everything else is even, I'm generally gonna grab the pitcher with a higher rank. Some outlier stats that affect a pitchers value are FIRE and STA. So a 60 rank pitcher with 30 Fire might outperform a 90 rank pitcher with 5 fire. And stamina doesn't really affect how good they are - but you could argue that an 80 rank pitcher with 120 stamina will probably deliver more value than a 90 rank pitcher with 80 stamina - one will throw 260 innings and the other 170 or so.
Hitters are a different story. I've found that power is more consistent than average / obp. So a lower rank guy with high fire, high slugging might be worth more than a high average empty stat player. And defensive value is not equally blended into the overall rank. a 100 O Rank / 0 D Rank guy is probably 80 overall rank. While a 0 O Rank / 100 D Rank player is probably 20 overall rank. Hitters in baseball tend to be over ranked according to average / obp - so it's important to consider everything else (switch hitters / lefties / righties, speed, dwar, fire, etc.) when evaluating.

Re: Re: Player ranking
So it's say spoken yes unspoken. Seems a bit of yes but at any moment you might get 5 or 6 stars slump for the season. Kind of happened my first team had 5 high rank position starters and my closer and my sp2 slot. That and not understanding how the draft worked. I am barely into my 3rd team. Big curve in the whole process. Thank for some insight.
Re: Player ranking
Thanks for your reply. JI am just trying to shorten the learning curve. Will have to spend a but more time on the pitcher stamina and fire. So is fire related to WAR? The players real life WAR. ?
So do you when you begun you initial ranking do you draft SP, RP or position, sluggers ? Wondering have you been successful with a team with more small bal then HRs?
on my 3rd team and really have quite a few questions . I do appreciate the information. I am nit opposed to making different strategies seeking what formulas might work. Anything, that you might want to share would be appreciated.
Thanks Mark..

Take a look at the Sheik's lineup in one of your leagues, he's got some great clues on how to win in AutoLeagues.
https://www.pennantchase.com/lgTeam..
1) Notice his DWar at premium defensive positions (SS, 2b, CF). He has elite defenders in those spaces (Banks, Frisch, Griffey). If you go to compiled stats you'll see D+/-. That's every time a player robs a hit or in the case of negative numbers, turns an out into a hit. Those three have big D+/- numbers.
2) Notice how he has two sub 50 rank starting pitchers? Some guys are good simply because of their elite hit rate (Lundgren and Fernandez both 5.7 h/9). Those are great steals in the auto-draft. It's good to look at winning rosters to see how they're doing it.
A few notes on your team in this league. Raines in CF isn't enough bat, fielding, or speed. Looking at the free agents, best to go with a defensive wizard like Carlos Gomez/Andruw Jones. Same with Paul O'Neill - you could maybe platoon him with Edgar at DH but there's better available fielders with similar batting profiles. Witt probably not good enough at SS - I'd go with a better defender. Berra could be upgraded with McCann or maybe Cal Raleigh.

Re: Player ranking
Defense-Independent Component ERA (DICE)
Measures a pitcher's effectiveness based only on plays that do not involve fielders: home runs allowed, strikeouts, hit batters, and walks.
I actually look at it when looking at a pitchers league history or comparing a pitcher across leagues. All things being equal, it works as a tie-breaker when comparing players because it takes defense out of the equation.
