Really?? C'mon

Really?? C'mon

https://www.pennantchase.com/lgBoxS..
This is so stupid, leadoff batter of a game doubles and is immediately forced out at 3B on a bunt attempt, I don't have my guys bunting more than 15% EVER and no manager would ever call for a sacrifice in that situation- EVER - and if he did, HE would find a pink slip in HIS Locker

Not sour grapes - just blatantly stupid managing

Re: Really?? C'mon

I would guess Peckingpaugh tried a surprise bunt not a sacrifice. It is a fair question to ask though because technically the settings in Strategy only talk about when to sacrifice with a runner on first and 0 outs or 1 outs. It does not mention a runner on 2nd at all.

That is why I suspect it was a surprise bunt.

Re: Re: Really?? C'mon

No it was not a surprise Bunt, Peckinpaugh is a 5 Speed and is not considered a "FAST" Runner and as such can't Surprise bunt, but that would have been a reason it happened if he had been a Fast Runner.

It's just that the whole play is totally unrealistic, if you start a game with a lead off Double you don't sacrifice him to 3rd, that is so lame - it' should not happen.

There is no Double Play in place, there are no outs, and the runner is in scoring position, you swing the bat there, you do not sacrifice, PERIOD.

Re: Really?? C'mon

Another question might be why do you have your number two hitter bunt at all? I know it’s a freak league with weaker hitters but he’s ranked 90s. Why is he set to bunt at all? And if you like him bunting to setup your 3-4 hitters than bunting with runner at 2nd is legit. It’s doing what you asked under the context that we can’t be super specific about situations.

I just looked up stats for bunting with runner on 2nd. 70% of time the bunt was successful (batter out, lead runner to 3rd). Then add in the batter being safe. Only 4% of the time is the lead runner thrown out at 3rd. I don’t know PCs percentages, but to say it’s a dumb managerial play seems wrong.l with those odds.

Re: Re: Really?? C'mon

Fair points YBB but the situation- very beginning of a game, simply does not warrant sacrificing there 6th inning? Sure but not 1st - especially when he’s a RH facing a tough Lefty who for all we know may be having a off day - just can’t bunt with the 2nd batter of a game after a double- that’s bad baseball- shows no confidence whatsoever in your team- statistically it might be a high % move but it’s kinda like eating a dirt sandwich

Re: Really?? C'mon

I gotcha, but you know in this sim you can’t control the when. So best to assume zero or 100% and set as such. Like stealing bases, I don’t understand anyone setting to 15%, 50%, 80%, etc. You can’t decide when it happens so only 0 and 100 makes sense, either you want it to happen or you don’t.

Re: Re: Really?? C'mon

Say what you will about Bud Black, but it is impressive that he managed to call a first inning bunt with a man on second (a "pink slip" offense) back in 2013, and he's still a big league manager today! =)

not for the same team.... lol

Re: Re: Really?? C'mon

In that case, it's impressive he didn't get fired until 2015 😂
