Weird extra innings record?

Weird extra innings record?

My team (Cardinals) in the Foghorn custom league has played 3 consecutive games of 16 innings, 11 innings, and 19 innings. That is a grand total of 46 innings in 3 games. Does anyone know what the major league record for innings in a three game stretch is? The only thing I could find was that the Tigers once played 5 consecutive extra inning games for 54 total innings.

Re: Weird extra innings record?

In 1920 the Brooklyn Robins played 3 consecutive games that included the longest game (by innings) in MLB history.

May 1 vs Boston played 26 innings and the game was called because of
darkness with the score tied at 1-1. Both pitchers (Leon Cadore & Joe Oeschger) went the distance.
May 2 vs Philadelphia they lost 4-3 in 13 innings
May 3 vs Boston again lost 2-1 in 19 innings.

3 games - 58 innings.

Re: Re: Weird extra innings record?

Thanks Sheik! I knew about the 26 inning game, but I didn’t know that they followed that up with two more extra inning games. Gotta think that 58 innings in 3 games is a record that will never be broken.

Two interesting things I noticed about that stretch on baseball reference: the Robins used a total of 3 pitchers over those 58 innings (all 3 pitchers threw complete games), and the 26 inning game lasted for 3 hours and 50 minutes - an hour shorter than a 9 inning Yankees-Red Sox game.

Re: Weird extra innings record?

Honorable mention has to go to the 1981 minor league game between the Rochester Redwings featuring a young Cal Ripken and the Pawtuckett Red Sox featuring some guy named Wade Boggs. The game was played in April and went 32 innings before being suspended then was resumed in June where they played one more inning for a total of 33 for the game. Pawtuckett won 3-2

Thanks sick - 3 hours 50 minutes for a 26 inning game !!! And they probably didn't use a dozen baseballs in the game.
