Re: Re: An official Custom Commish How-

elgato really??? WTF

Re: An official Custom Commish How-to G

Dude come on, they had legitimate concerns that you apparently ignored and they called you out for it. What did you think would happen? From what I can tell, you were asked multiple times by multiple people what was going on, and as far as I've seen, you haven't answered the questions in any way except by deflecting them... Please stop causing more turmoil and let everyone enjoy this phenomenal website. Just because you don't like the outcome doesn't mean you can trash the other users involved simply because you feel they wronged you

Re: Re: An official Custom Commish How-

are you talking to me

Re: An official Custom Commish How-to G

No. Talking to him. You're good

Re: Re: An official Custom Commish How-

ok thanks

Re: An official Custom Commish How-to G

I did answer there question I didn’t do jack

Re: Re: An official Custom Commish How-

Well, now that an insightful (or so I'd hoped) thread has been hijacked...back to the matter at hand.,,

Re: An official Custom Commish How-to G

Yes, please...

Re: An official Custom Commish How-to G

LMAO.....funny how 2 of the cheaters and bullies I talked about in my post the other day are now on here crying about being prejudiced against. Both are cheaters, both have been accused of cheating and kicked the people accusing them of it out of the leagues that they were running where the cheating took place, and yet they want to come out here and play the "I'm innocent....I didn't do anything.....why is everyone being so mean to me" card.

Re: Re: An official Custom Commish How-

am i 1

Re: Re: An official Custom Commish How-

in fairness, Jay is correct, this thread was supposed to deal with something that could help a lot of PC players and especially owners looking to be a commissioner for the 1st time.

If you want to point fingers, whine, deflect, deny, about something that seems so blatantly obviously a misuse of commissioners powers then do it on a separate thread where the rest of us can ignore you.

Re: An official Custom Commish How-

Yes, but if he is one of the commissioners that is causing the issues with unfair commissionering, why would we let him have his 2 cents of input be allowed ?? He says having a "How to" guide.....what...how to cheat ???

Re: An official Custom Commish How-

JWB you are not one of the owners I am referring to

Re: Re: An official Custom Commish How-

I have never seen anything posted that says Jay is a cheater, so I have no idea what you are talking about.

But then again, it seems you don't know what you are taking about either

Re: An official Custom Commish How-

Youve got to be kidding me. I run so many leagues and give input in so many others (vice, etc), all I recall from you is whining about something in the beginning of WAR Room and bouncing, and whining to other owners you won't be in leagues I'm in, like a "him or me" mantra..

Not even sure what your problem is, to be honest..Far as your accusations, I'd come with some concrete proof first homes, to which I can say with certainty youre the first to utter such crap.

Am I an a**hole ? Sure, I can be. Far more so as a participating owner than Commish. But "unfair" or "cheat" aren't words anyone uses to describe me around here. I cant recall ever not helping a new owner or passing along info to a fellow owner or Commish.

Seriously, I run leagues featuring guys like Yankeebb, Mcvn4, Shiekyerboudi, Wallercrawler, and so, so many others that you think I'm bamboozling many of the greatest owners this site has ever seen ? You're nuts, man. And I should have a lot more rings too. ;)

Re: An official Custom Commish How-to G

I vouch for you, Jay, you're a phenomenal user here on PC, both as Commish and team owner in general

Re: Re: An official Custom Commish How-

This thread is perfect timing. I just brought popcorn back from the corner store. No drama like PC drama!!

Re: An official Custom Commish How-

I'd be in favor of something that was described in the original post. But, i dont think having be a dedicated how-to post would be that interesting or helpful. To be honest, most things can be figured out by using the sandbox guy provides to test drive. And anyone considering being a commish should really take advantage of that option so they can learn the mechanics of running a league.

But, if it was something dedicated where new ideas were shared, creative rules and concepts were discussed, and some of the more nuanced aspects of running a league, i'd be more inclined to participate. Share what works and what doesnt work well, etc.

Re: An official Custom Commish How-

Yeah, except it was attempt at trying to gather and pool information to help others starting out or taking a crack at running a League. Its turned into a sh*tshow now.

Re: Re: An official Custom Commish How-

but again thats kind of the point of the sandbox. it gives complete access to the tools to learn how to run a league.

to try to compile any sort of guide is not realistic. Custom leagues are not one size fits all. So, anything that would be universal can and should be learned via the sandbox option.

Re: An official Custom Commish How-

We live in an era of very short attention spans, no, Customs are not one size fits all. But, there are still basic things that could helps future Commishes grow that one doesnt find listed anywhere on the site. It was proposed as a sort of stopgap because some have clearly never figured out some important elements to a successful league. Ways to avoid creating too many stat monsters, best AB/IP numbers for progressable players, even silly stuff like "hey, if you run a league where you switch teams each season, if you retire all players each Year, you are able to build a historical stat archive.", things of this nature and others. Most still follow a few basic tenets, alot of the noise and details just vary. Theres some stuff even seasoned vets admit never being aware of until well after they've been here/been running a league.

Re: An official Custom Commish How-

Of course it's a good idea to have a "How To Commish" guide, and a terrible idea to throw the idea out on the boards and expect anything other than this thread.

It's a massive undertaking that would require a lot of time and organization and commitment. Anyone who is truly serious and knowledgeable enough to take on that challenge would already know the 6 or 7 PC'ers who may actually be able to be helpful in making the "How To..." accurate.

Leave gbacci out of it. Unless gbacci has something concrete to evaluate, he would have no reason to give an opinion on it, and certainly no reason to point a link or page to it.

Re: Re: An official Custom Commish How-

Exactly what Raging said. The intentions are good, but you kind of contradicted your point. If people dont have the time or attention span to learn how to run a league, then you cant expect them to read through a how to guide either.

Re: An official Custom Commish How-to G

I think there’s some things that could help tho. Like how to create a draft class how to tag a player ideas how to do free agency etc.....

Re: Re: An official Custom Commish How-

I think it would be worthwhile.

Some good parts that could be addressed:

- Combining with a different thread... how Commish's successfully manage dW progressions.

- Ending the "no free year" plague on some leagues. (Explaining that contracts are "keeper values," not "current year salary.")

- Different ideas for contract options, and the best practices for administering those special rules. (Tagging, contract options, etc.)

Currently, a lot of players think they can be a Commish after playing for 2 months. But then, if you hold off on starting a league... you learn how much you don't know and you're not comfortable being a Commish until you've been playing for several years. Speeding up that learning process would be a great benefit.

Re: An official Custom Commish How-to G

I'm definitely observing and reviewing different leagues commissioner tactics but will never really know what and how to handle the options that they have until I jump in on that venture.

Re: An official Custom Commish How-to G

Here's some ideas for topics I'd find helpful and want to read about. I'd like people to add to the subjects below and/or add more topics to the list!

1. Give an idea of the time needed to set up a league, run drafts, handle free agency, etc. What needs to be done daily. Someone wanting to become a commish could read about the dedication they need to have and the expected time they'd have to put in.

Also, it would be an interesting read even for people that never have or don't plan on running a league. Just knowing what's involved and the work a Commish needs to do is good knowledge to have.

2. The basics of how the controls work. Maybe a step by step for different situations.

3. Choose your help wisely. There's a lot of situations with leagues being ran by an inexperienced Commish that chooses an inexperienced vice commissioner(s). This is almost always a recipe for disaster.

Maybe mention on the boards that you're looking to fill a league and need a player or 2 with commissioner experience.

4. Learn the game. Become good at the game. Play auto leagues and custom leagues. Observe how successful custom leagues are run. There's knowledge to be gained there! Learn how to build successful teams and win rings. To me, these are basics.

I'm finding more "inexperienced experts" running leagues these days. Part of the success of running a league is to try and keep the same owners in it long term. Not constantly replacing owners. That can hold up the pace of the league also. People tend to drop out of leagues like that.

Giving a little advice to struggling owners new to PC and/or custom leagues will help them improve their team, gain knowledge, make them want to stay, and improve your league overall.

5. Make sure everything you can think of is covered on your rules page. Don't constantly make changes and run a league on the fly. We've all seen arguments because of this.

When there's situations where changes need to be made. Let everyone know in advance and it the proper time. Rule changes made during the season are usually a bad idea.

Cover simple things like the pace of the league and the offseason schedule. Or post it on the league page. I've been in leagues where people complain it's ran too fast or too slow. This can be avoided by simply including "x games per day". Or posting the offseason schedule.

Decide how to deal with questionable trades. Should you choose some owners to review challenged deals.

Re: An official Custom Commish How-to G

6. Don't be afraid to ask for help. There's plenty of cool people in the PC community. If you can't find help in your league, go to the boards. There's a variety of subjects covered. Or start your own thread.

7. Personal conduct - If you don't have manners and basic people/communication skills, don't run a league.

8. Trash talk - Some leagues have trash talk, which is fine. Let it be known in the rules. There's certain lines that shouldn't be crossed by the commish and owners.

9. The "know it all" attitude isn't helpful. Be open to discussing problems/situations that arise. The owners need to be respectful to you also.

There's times when advice is being offered because people want to help make your league better.

10. You're a commissioner, not a dictator. If you're one of these idiots that thinks they can boot anyone that questions anything, don't run a league.

11. Advice on who to invite to join a new league.

12. Advice on how to deal with troublesome owners/situations.

13. Don't cheat. There's been plenty of instances. Guess what? You're not as slick as you think. There's plenty of intelligent people on here that will notice you're up to something.

Re: An official Custom Commish How-to G

This is a great idea! Wether it's a guide or just a continuously running thread where people can get help or advice.

When I first ran a league, I was lucky enough to have owners in it with lots of Commish experience. People like ScreamNChicken, Joe Rocker, & Windy City all helped, answered questions, and/or offered advice. Made things so much easier. Couldn't have done it without them.

There's a wealth of knowledge that can be shared by plenty of commissioners that run successful leagues. From reading the boards over many years, I've seen a lot of helpful people that don't mind offering advice.
