Beginner League

Beginner League

Read the post on the new wild card game, and it was called out that new users are struggling against the veterans. This makes sense and probably brings alot of the frustration we see on the boards and chat, especially for those who aren't spending the time to understand the game.

Anyway, how about a few beginner leagues? For example, only available if you have under 1000 games played or something to that extent.

I know one of the major DFS sites does this and it's a good way to get your feet wet without always being slaughtered.

Re: Beginner League

I think you're missing the point. It would help promote a good experience for beginners and could improve retention rate.

Re: Re: Beginner League

Especially if you are playing against teams who start out with 4 players already signed to contracts and you don't understand that just because a player looks good on paper it don't mean jack in this game.

Re: Beginner League

FWIW, I haven’t had more than about 20 games on this site and never watched a full season of baseball, and I’m just fine with the leagues as they are now. As long as I can ask questions and get reasonable answers I am good. I love this game enough and have a thick enough skin to be able to handle it when im doing poorly and roll with it. I don’t think all that extra work is needed.

Re: Re: Beginner League

It's a great idea, we just never had enough new people on a regular basis to really justify it, but it might be worth thinking about now.

4Bagger is right, Rank has definitely helped, but most people aren't used to sim leagues especially leagues where all the players/stats are great. Those of us who were playing sims with a mix of all-time players for decades know that Babe Ruth can easily hit .220 or Sandy Koufax can get shelled, but the average person doesn't.

Re: Beginner League

Gbacci,
Why not just expand the strategy and tips FAQ?

I think that's a pretty good idea. It would help people from getting frustrated early on. Yes, we all have to take our lumps, but if it means keeping more people interested and playing, then why not?

Maybe make the newbie Auto available to anyone who has joined within the last 30 days? Is that easier, coding-wise, than 1000 games played? Either would work, I think.

Re: Re: Beginner League

Mr. Bubbles, the beginner leagues proposed would not affect you in any way. There's no reason to be that strongly opposed to them.

Re: Beginner League

I am new on here and my first two teams are getting creamed but my third is now 22 games in, two games over .500 and leading the division by a game so I’m improving. While I appreciate the sentiment of a beginner league I’d rather learn from the vets even if that means taking some lumps. This SIM is like everything else in life there’s a learning curve involved and if you can’t tolerate that then it’s not for you.

Re: Re: Beginner League

I do think beginner leagues could be a fun alternative for people starting out; then again with the league being free it's hard to ask for gbacci to add too many new features. If a beginner gets creamed in his first league, it's free! Join 19 other leagues! There is something fun about starting out bad and improving over time.

One other suggestion for beginners: You can check out other leagues which are in process. Click on any team owner and see the other leagues they are in. Click on that league and check out the rosters of the better teams, check out the all-stars at each position, check out the players that were drafted first, etc. It's really not that hard to improve your skills pretty quickly.

Don't get discouraged! It's fun to have a lot of new people joining the game!
