PC game back in the day

PC game back in the day

I suppose a few others here are gen x'ers who grew up playing baseball games on a PC...did anyone else play Major League Manager, which I think had seasons from '86 and '89? I was addicted to that game as a kid and I think it's why I like PC so much - the interface is very similar. I also played a lot of Earl Weaver (version 1) back in the day...

Re: PC game back in the day

For me it was Micro league baseball. It came with a disk that allowed you to put in any team you wanted. When I was in the army back in 86 everyone had a commodore computer and on weekends sometimes we would have tournaments and play for money. The replay feature in this game is close to what that game was.

Re: Re: PC game back in the day

Microleague Baseball was so awesome! I played that for years - and the bonus disks, like general manager, and box score stats compiler made it even better.

Re: PC game back in the day

I can still smell the APBA cards in the team envelopes...

Re: PC game back in the day

Strat-o-matic for me. Got my first set in 66, the 65 season. Wore out those cards and dice. Converted a couple of APBA players to Strat. I was so young back then. Had all the time in the world.

Re: Re: PC game back in the day

If you want to go completely analogue, Strat-O-Matic Baseball was my 1st "Simulation" experience - using cards and dice. Bought my 1st set in 1966 and have been playing ever since. Also the 1st computerized sim game I played when they introduced their season disks in the late '80's. We recently had our annual Rookie/Free Agent draft in the SOM keeper league I've been in since 1987 - the TABL !! I played APBA and Statis-Pro also.

Re: PC game back in the day

A friend of mine had APBA in the 70's. What a blast. We kept stat books and everything on all the teams. I had a game where the backdrop was Wrigley. there were 2 spinners. One for the batter and one for the pitcher. The cards were round and you slipped them in the spinners and gave em a flick. Each spinner was broken into a slice of pie. If the arrow landed in the 1 slot it was a homer. Power hittes had bigger areas than weaker hitters.
For some reason I remember Nate Colbert and Wilbur Wood the most

Re: Re: PC game back in the day

The game with the spinners was made by Cadaco. Great fun back in the day.

Re: PC game back in the day

Long Ball a game with induvial cards for each player and results determined by rolling two 8 sided dice, one Blue one White generating a random number with the result possibly being odd,

Statis Pro Baseball - cards for each player determined by cards but allowing Managing decisions on a pitch to pitch basis, infield in, steal, pickoff, great games

Re: PC game back in the day

On a computer, my first was Microleague Baseball followed by Earl Weaver. Myself and a few friends had a league of games we played against each other in college and it was a blast.

Before that, I started with Strat-o-matic, Statis Pro and the Avalon Hill games like Superstar Baseball. In college, with that same group of friends, we also got Pursue the Pennant and played that a lot.

I really wish I had kept all the Avalon Hill games I had. I played the baseball, football and golf games constantly as a kid. Every now and then I look for them on eBay but have never bothered to buy one.

Re: Re: PC game back in the day

For me it was Tony LaRussa's PC game

Re: PC game back in the day

I loved Strat O Matic. I had a bunch of seasons, both the ones that would come out for the season that had just finished, and a bunch of the seasons of the past they would put out. I think it was the 1987 season that I played out in full ..sitting on my living room floor for hours. I blame my current back problems on those days where even as a kid my back would be killing me as I sat there but I just wouldn't move or stop to stretch.
Another thing I loved was to take a season and create my own teams by separating all the players into their positions, then blindly just dealing each group out into pilea til it made a full team, and seeing what pitching staffs and lineups would occur.
I'd been searching for something for a while that gave me the same thrill, and PC is it!

Re: Re: PC game back in the day

loved avalon hill superstar baseball, dice game with 96 player cards i believe. played that non stop for years. also had i think it was sports illustrated dice game with color coded sheets for all time teams, i would just do double elimination tournaments. so much fun!

Re: PC game back in the day

First experience was with APBA - great fun for a young baseball fan! Second and favorite that I stuck with (and actually just found and re-ordered the original game) was Avalon Hill Superstar Baseball. My MLB Career Stats league here on PC is almost a carbon copy of it!

Re: PC game back in the day

I wish Earl Weaver Baseball II was now a Windows game. I played it a lot in Europe when I was in the Army on my old Packard Bell 286 computer…back when there was a “West” Germany. :-)

Re: Re: PC game back in the day

You can play a lot of the classic games at the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/msdos_E..

Re: PC game back in the day

Status Pro Baseball was an amazing game which I played so much the cards would get worn out and faded to the point we made replacement cards I also played Tony Larussa baseball for pc but to where it really all started for me was big apple sports which was a mail in league where they would snail mail your results every week could hardly wait to see my team results every week
