Most important stats...

Most important stats...

I'm a rookie manager;I love this site. But, I'm awfulat it....I have yet to have one of my 12 or 13 teams finish above 500 and most finish near the bottom of its division. Some teams look great to me and start off well but start to slide and never recover!

Which stats are used by the CPU ...I focus on rank, avg, hr's , sb's and era, wins, rank and endurance.

Is there a explanation of stat importance anywhere on the site?

Do compiled stats ever have a bearing on at bat or pitching results?

Thx for any ideas, and may your games never be rained out!

Welland Good

Re: Most important stats...

Welcome in :)

Only Real Stats have incidence on game results.

Here's what I'm looking for:

Batter: All stats are important. You can start with RK,but don't forget defensive! (FLD% and dW*)
SP, EN* and BB/SO ratio are also important.

Pitcher: Never look to W,L or ERA. (Useless)
WHIP (H, BB) SO are the big part. After, stamina and Fire.

Take a look at Progression if your leagues are using it. If not, don't bother.

Also, your ballpark configuration could impact your players stats.

Good luck,
Simon

Just the kind of info i'm after,Simon, thank you

Re: Most important stats...

Also, you can click on a particular player and then look at "See League History" for that player. This typically gives you a pretty good idea how this player has performed in this league. Rank is a guide, but does not always tell the true story about a player. Some guys with high rankings do not have great stats. Other guys outperform their rankings.

Re: Re: Most important stats...

"you can click on a particular player and then look at "See League History" for that player."

I hear this a lot, but don't get this approach, you have no idea if the player was in a Big Boost or Big Disadvantage park for 4 of the 6 years shown, so a hitter could be wildly inflated, or likewise if Pitchers had Big Disadvantage Parks and Fantastic DWar defenders and look a lot better than they should.

I realize it was meant as a help but I myself don't buy it, you can never be sure if your comparing apples to apples or not, it's kinda like reading the racing form and they don't tell you the Horse was 5 lbs over or what the track condition was like - it's incomplete data, and not very useful

Hitters - look for High BA, OBP, SLG, Fire and of course OPS, speed is important too, that 1 or 2 speed is DEATH on the bases - DWar is very important as it saves or allows hits- but be careful, in All Time Greats you can have some pretty high Dwar guys with less than great Fielding percentages, Equipment was not as good back then. - If a guy steals 30 hits but makes 40 errors how much is he actually helping?

Pitchers, rely on Low Whip, and H/9 and High K/9 - stamina is important as well - unless you have good relievers with high stamina those 79-85 Stamina Starters are death on your bullpen

Re: Re: Most important stats...

I didn’t know that only real stats are what counts in game results. Compilation stats have no effecT, huh? If not. this is a HUGE part of my problem.

Re: Most important stats...

Real stats only. Compiled stats are the result of the sim crunching the Real Stats. That's not to say you shouldn't analyze past compiled results to get an understanding of how good the player might be in that particular league.

Re: Re: Most important stats...

I am as close to positive as u can be this is going to help Me quite a bit. I have used real stats for abut 20% of the season, then converted to compiled stats. As you know, frequently this has some key changes in the lineups. I have this sneaky suspicions a ton of Frustrations (watching team slip) are going out the window, as I play auto-leaugue. THANKS TONS FOLKS & MR COMMISH!

Re: Most important stats...

im not new, but i was gone for a few years, and i appreciate this post as well

pitchers are still the toughest for me. i try to go by whip,. h/9 and k s/9

Re: Most important stats...

I’m going to add to what these guys have said. I’ve had my share of wins and losses, I’ve been around a while. Don’t forget the baseball aspect of it. Nothing better than winning with some of your favorite players. :) Have fun with it!!

Re: Re: Most important stats...

I would to add something..

Remember that between a .280 and a .240 hitter, it's only 4 hits per 100 AB.

This is why you shoud also look at %FLD, SP etc
My best seasons were with underground players :)

Re: Most important stats...

not really

Re: Re: Most important stats...

I don't want to duplicate what has been said so I won't but agree with much of it. I'll add that you can't underestimate the value of high dwar and Fld % on your pitching staff. I've had good luck, getting better than expected performances out of pitchers because of of good defense.

Re: Most important stats...

What I have found with playing PC off and on for about 8 years now is that there is more than one way to skin a cat. If you play long enough you will eventually come up with your own preferred method or strategy. Some of these listed here I use, some I don't care for and don't. The fun in the game is discovering your own method of play. However don't get too comfortable because as soon as Guy makes a change to the engine you will have to develop a new strategy for winning at the game. The way I play in 2020 is very different from how I played in 2012. I don't imagine I will still be playing in 2028 but if I was it would be very different than how I currently am playing the game.

Re: Re: Most important stats...

Simon,
You say compiled stats, like those measuring performance over the course of a league season, have no importance?

Re: Most important stats...

Correct Bishop, compiled stats just show how a player simmed for a particular season. They have no effect on future performance. Only real stats will effect future performance.

Re: Re: Most important stats...

NCOOK,

I disagree. The overall average of how the player faired in comparative sim leagues is a much better indicator of what to expect than real stats.

Neither has a cause/effect relationship to how the player will perform your team. They are only predictors.

When it comes to pitching, unknowns such as defense and pitching strategy can greatly impact results.

Re: Most important stats...

You guys are talking about two different things. Ncook just said their compiled stats don’t directly impact what happens next. Looking at compiled stats definitely helps know what to expect going forward.

Re: Most important stats...

Dempsey,
Compiled stat may be used as a predictor, but they are not used by the sim. Only real stats are. And because of what you said, park effects, defense, opponent pitching or hitting, etc. are unknowns when looking at compiled stats, so they must be taken with a grain of salt.

Re: Re: Most important stats...

But the compiled stats tell you how a particular player in a comparative league setting has fared on average in the sim. Isn't this the best predictor for you?

If you disagree, great. I'd actually prefer nobody does what I do anyway.

Best success in your leagues (unless you are in one mine -) ).
