Adding to 1920s player pool

Adding to 1920s player pool

I want to set up a custom league starting in 1920, with all 16 teams from that year. Problem is size of the player pool. If only use 1920 team rosters, there aren't enough players, and certainly not enough quality players (with enough ABs or IPs). Any suggestions on how to expand the player pool and keep it "real" for that time period?

Re: Adding to 1920s player pool

If there was a league in 1920 then there are enough players- you would need a smaller league, only like 12 owners just like in real life.

I think the problem is you want too deep a player Pool, but if there was a Real Life 12 team MLB league back then, there are enough players although some would suck

Re: Adding to 1920s player pool

A strategy I have seen used before is to look back to 1919 for players who did not play in 1920. These can be either added to the team for whom they played or, to set them apart from your regular 1920 players, be added as free agents to a pool which from which a draft can be run. The advantage of making them draftable free agents is that team owners have the chance to fill roster gaps. .

Re: Re: Adding to 1920s player pool

A little history lesson: each major league had 8 teams until 1961, when the AL expanded to 10 and went from a 154 game schedule to 162. In 1962 the NL expanded to 10 teams and a 162 game schedule. As a side note, the '61 expansion was the reason for the * next to Maris' HR record.
