Hypothetical Question

Hypothetical Question

I have a hypothetical who would be better question...

Player A is .286/.396/.532 but has say 41 rank
Player B is .266/.305/.448 but has say a 75 rank...

Which would be the better choice? Player A who has better numbers? Or B who has a higher rank?

Re: Hypothetical Question

See, this where Rank is misleading. I need to know more. The whole player isn't there. Speed, FLD%, dWAR, Fire Rating are all things I'd want to know, as they aren't included in Rank.

Then what kind of league you're in. If its a custom league with progressions, then his AB, Age, Progression Scale all can play a role.

Then we haven't gotten into what position they play. Is it a key defensive position or is it a position like 1B or corner OF where you may sacrifice a little defense for some run production ?

There's alot more than Rank to player evaluation. Don't get too hung up on just that one number. It doesn't tell the whole story.

Re: Re: Hypothetical Question

Oh gotcha Jay, thank you for answering that for me.

Re: Hypothetical Question

Rank is the average of AVG OBP OPS, so like Jay said, it doesn’t take everything into account. Overall numbers and what you like for your team are more important than rank. For pitchers it’s WHIP H9 K9 so to me it’s more meaningful, since the isn’t much else to look at.

Re: Re: Hypothetical Question

Yes, Ill second that. Since Rk incorporates more of the essential numbers to successful pitching, I tend to weigh it more with pitchers as well.

Re: Hypothetical Question

Depending on the type of league you are in, you might also need to want to look at age and progression. I know the league I am in right now, that seems to be core to most owners evaluations since they are looking at long term success.

Re: Re: Hypothetical Question

if the 2 players shown were in the same league it would not even be possible for the player with higher statistics to have a lower rank.

As someone said Rank is the determined by taking a players BA, OBP and OBS, COMPARED TO THE REST OF THE PLAYERS IN THAT PARTICULAR LEAGUE, and dividing the total by 3

So Dwar, Speed, SLG and anything else do nothing to effect a players Rank - because Rank only reflects a players batting or Pitching prowess, however you might actually chose a player with lower offensive Rank due to t very high DWAR, fantastic fielding % and speed. They may not be as valuable hitting, but their strong defense makes up for their weaker hitting.

In Pitching, it's strictly rank - because defense does not matter and pitchers don't hit

Re: Hypothetical Question

That example is extremely misleading though because you would never have two players in the same league with that slash line and those ranks. But yes pay attention to the stats not just rank. :)
