League Rules
STREETBALL MASTERSEach team will have two primary players—Streetball Masters (SM). These are the only two players who are allowed to remain on the team from one season to the next.
At the end of an entire season, an owner may replace one or both SM players by notifying the commissioner. Then, the first one or two draft picks in the next draft will be the new SM player(s).
If a player is released who had points/years remaining on his contract, those points are lost.
STREETBALL MASTERS POINT SYSTEM
This begins with the 1979 season. All eight teams will be given 10 points. These points represent years. No longer will teams be able to secure the services of a player for his entire career. Players cannot be resigned. Each season, teams are given two more points that can be used or accumulated/banked. There is no maximum contract length provided the team has contract years available.
Teams have some flexibility. Here are two examples:
EXAMPLE #1
Team 1 has two SM players and 10 points (years) available. The owner chooses to . . .
Use 6 points on Player 1A, securing his services for 6 seasons, leaving 4 points/years.
Use 3 of those 4 remaining points on Player 1B, leaving one point. The one remaining point is banked and can be used in the future.
EXAMPLE #2
Team 2 has two SM players and 10 points (years) available. The owner chooses to . . .
Use 7 points on Player 2A, securing his services for 7 seasons, leaving 3 points/years.
Use 1 of those 3 remaining points on Player 2B, leaving 2 points. The two remaining points are banked and can be used in the future. Player 2B becomes a free agent at the end of the next season.
TEAM COMPOSITION (Main players)
Teams will draft three additional players in the first phase of the draft. Counting the two SM players, each team must have one player eligible to play at each position: PG, SG, SF, PF, and C. Players are eligible at their primary positions and other positions according to the following chart:
PG—SG, also
SG—PG, SF, also
SF—SG, PF, also
PF—SF, C, also
C—PF, also
For the most part, these are the only 5 players each team will play. Players must “play through” injuries and fatigue. Unless one of these 5 players fouls out, they must play all 48 minutes since this is pickup streetball. Suck it up and play! 😀
TEAM COMPOSITION (Fill-In Players)
Teams will select three additional players in the second phase of the draft. Even though these players will see little to no action, there are two reasons for drafting these players:
1. The simulations require 8 players minimum.
2. To replace players who foul out.
Beginning with the 1979 season, there is no max TWS for fill-in players. After phase one of the draft, all of the remaining free agents are eligible to be drafted as fill-in (bench) players. The three original fill-in players will remain on the team throughout all segments and the playoffs; however, they can be inserted into the starting lineup if desired.
GAME SEGMENTS
There will be three 28-game segments. So, each team will play 84 games. During each 28-game segment, each team will play each of the other teams four times.
RE-DRAFTING
At the end of the first segment, the following will take place:
1. One of the three non-SM starters will be selected to remain on the team. The other two non-SM starters per team (16 players total) will be ineligible for the rest of the season.
2. Owners will replace the two removed players via the 2-round draft. The players selected may either move into the starting lineup OR may become fill-in players. The previous segment’s fill-in players are eligible to move into the starting lineup.
At the end of the second segment, the following will take place:
1. One of the two remaining non-SM starters will be selected to remain on the team. The other non-SM starter per team (8 players total) will be ineligible for the rest of the season.
2. Owners will replace their removed player via a 1-round draft. The players selected may either move into the starting lineup OR may become fill-in players. The previous segment’s fill-in players are eligible to move into the starting lineup.
3. The makeup of each team will be be same for the remainder of the season—segment 3 and the playoffs.
IMPORTANT NOTE: no tagged player may be dropped/released.
DRAFT ORDER
The draft order for in-season segments will be the reverse of the overall standings. Ties will be broken by head-to-head records and then head-to-head point differentials for all of the segments played at the time of the draft.
The draft order for new seasons will be the reverse of the final regular-season standings from the preceding season with the following exception. The first through fifth picks will be determined by the mini-tournament.
IMPORTANT! This is a change that I believe is in the best interest of the league:
During the offseason and before the draft, each owner will have to decide if he will keep both Streetball Masters, one SM, or no SM. If he keeps both, he will obviously not take part in the 2-round, SM draft for that season.
HERE IS THE CHANGE! If he keeps one, he will not draft in the SECOND round. Previously, he would lose out on his first-round pick. Teams opting to replace both SM players from the previous year will necessarily select players in both rounds.
All drafts will be SNAKE DRAFTS.
