Player Progression & Potential
If your leage changes player's real-stats after each season, then you'll want to understand which progression system your league is using. There are two types:- Fictional Progression - This uses the player's Potential rating and advances stats based on those ratings. See the Potential Descriptions below for more details on how this works.
- Real-Stats Progression - This moves players to their next real-life stats season, therefore it does NOT use the Player Potential rating. Players retire when they reach the end of their real-life careers. If this is turned on, you'll see a player's Career Value (cV) in the stats, and this value is used by the CPU when doing drafts, etc. This should NOT be used in tandem with the above style, and cannot be used for fictional players.
Player Potential: Basketball
A player's potential rating determines how he will progress between seasons in the old Classic Fictional Progression. There are a few exceptions (which apply to ALL potential ratings): Players with less than 720 real-life minutes played won't progress at all. Here's a breakdown:- Classic - Classic is the same as All-Star in Basketball. Classic was designed to be phased out. See All-Star below.
- Superstar - Players will become better overall in all categories, and they will increase faster and higher than the classic progression. This level is for the true stud prospects. The decline is generally slower, although they will still decline past peak age.
-
All-Star - Player will increase steadily until peak age (as determined by your league) and then decline steadily once past peak.
Players will improve, just not as much as superstars.
- Unpredictable - As is often the case, you never know where a prospect may go. One year he may get better, the next year he may get worse. Or a combination of both in different categories. Or he may just stay flat. He is most likely to decline past peak age, but he may stay flat or even improve.
- Flat - This prospect will mostly stay flat - he is who he is and he's not going to change much.
Note on Contracts
A player's potential will have a slight impact on his salary ask (for those leagues that use contracts). So a superstar is going to want more because his upside is higher, whereas other ratings could ask for less than they typically might due to the fact they could stay flat or even regress.
