AL East
Baltimore Orioles ++#
New York Yankees +
Boston Red Sox +
Tampa Bay Rays --
BAL - After setting the record for the quickest rebuild of all-time, Baltimore elected to sign Yeong and Butler as its core moves this offseason. In other words, Blow and Dominguez were replaced by…more than capable replacements. So much for that rebuild. It’s something to keep in mind in the near future, but for now, the Orioles remain as premier championship contenders.
BOS - For the second season in a row, we’re left wondering if the Red Sox got worse heading into the season. With 93 wins on a +170 run differential, they severely underperformed last season. However, a budget crunch that already forced the team’s hand with Idris Bridges and makes it impossible to retain Charlie Booth looms large. New ownership will have a big decision on its hands come late July, and that is in the back of our minds as we write this preview.
NYY - The biggest losers in the Orioles’ pump-fake is the New York Yankees, as the AL East would’ve been easier to navigate through. This is probably the best roster it has accumulated during its active 26-year postseason drought…which is nearly identical to its 2051 roster. What makes this year’s outlook a little bit different is youth; both of its sophomore starters are prime to improve from their solid 2051s, and Ratliff, Obama, and Allenye will look to take the next steps and fortify a dangerous lineup up and down. When at least two of the teams in a loaded division get worse, now is the time to take full advantage. “Will they?” is a major question.
TB - Do you know how hard it is in a league full of athleticism to have almost no speed in the lineup? That’s where the Rays are right now as they continue their rebuild, aided by the lowest payroll in the sport, a lineup with no clear star, and a mess of a bullpen. I’m not saying that Mark Allen has to be the only player from the current roster left in July, but that would be the best thing for the Rays to do at this juncture.
AL North
Toronto Blue Jays ++#
Detroit Tigers ++#
Minnesota Twins ++#
Chicago White Sox --
CWS - The White Sox started the teardown, then…didn’t complete it? At this point, their hand is forced. All three teams are plenty better than them, and once again, we’re left with a less-than-senior roster with a mediocre farm system (other than the top-heavy guys) to follow. It’s clear where the White Sox are going this season, and they cannot deviate from that and risk further damage.
DET - While both contenders, one significantly more than the other, have made major moves over the last two seasons, the Tigers have stayed pat. And they probably should. The team is highly capable of making a deep postseason run with its current core, and no amount of noise from across the Ambassador will change that. However, it isn’t as much of a slam dunk as it was in years past, and that’s okay, because we all like competition…just maybe not the Tigers’ organization.
MIN - Two years after saying the Twins were a team that you wouldn’t be shocked if they were one of the worst or pushing for a postseason spot, they have made it to the ALCS, won the MLB Cup, and nearly won the AL North a year ago. Other than Werner Rawlins and extending Quadell Ramsey, it was a quiet offseason for Minnesota, but the momentum that they have built over the last few years should carry over for another solid season in 2052.
TOR - Winning the offseason last year wasn’t enough, so the Blue Jays elected to do it again and traded for SAMEN NIKOLAI. The organization’s haphazard approach to building a roster — Man and Cizeron are the only notable long-term signings that remain from last offseason, and Kendrick is making millions to play Triple-A baseball — might be a concern for players in the future, but for now, Toronto has catapulted itself into clear contenders. There are two seasons' worth of organizational behavior that show it will do whatever it takes to make sure that happens.
AL South
Texas Rangers +++#
Music City Stars +
San Antonio Bandits +
Kansas City Royals --
KC - The Royals can certainly play defense; there’s no denying that. They also can’t hit…at all. By far the worst projected offense in baseball, Kansas City is the most unpredictable team in the league. Because they play such good defense to support a top-heavy pack of arms, the ceiling isn’t as low as you would think. However, playing in one of the toughest divisions in the toughest league, and with the current lineup being so abhorrent, comes with tempered expectations for their 2052 season.
MC - Once again, I am here to try and level expectations for the Stars. Yes, it’s a worse defensive team. Yes, that’s a problem when your rotation relies on outs on balls in play. However, Jameis Ford-Richardson returns, and that leads to a rejuvenated offense that we know can carry a squad. It’s not a guarantee that it leads them to prosperity, but 90 wins isn’t entirely out of reach for the Stars.
SA - The good news is that 2051 showed a pulse from the Bandits. Much like that season, they enter the season in a similar spot to their division counterpart, Music City: a team that very well could win 90 games, especially after putting a focus on its bullpen. However, that’s likely not going to be enough to find a spot in the postseason.
TEX - None of what I said about the other teams matters when the sapient Rangers co-exist in the same division. Rarely, the best team in baseball is also the most complete team in baseball, but that’s what Texas’s cards hold. A circular lineup with no holes (Marvin Mack resurgence pending), a rotation with three aces and the best one not being able to drink, and a four-headed monster in the bullpen? Ownership (and last year’s World Series) will tell that it’s hard to be World Series or bust, but the Rangers are exactly that.
AL West
Vancouver Vespers ++#
San Jose A's +
Seattle Mariners +
Anaheim Angels -
ANA - Of the many 70-85 win teams that exist in the AL, the Angels are the easiest to feel the least confident about. Never mind the defensive first 2B playing SS and the average SS playing CF, not much was done to improve a meddling lineup, and neither Gwynn nor Alford is getting much younger. The offensive talent it does have, plus some pretty elite arms, keep the ceiling high, but there’s not much that shows me it will improve from its 2051 80-win total.
SJ - Primarily due to a lower offensive boom across the sport, its aces didn’t fall too much to Cisco Field’s super hitter-friendly conditions. Still, the pitching staff as a whole is rated as one of the worst in baseball, and now it removes Appius Dahl from the equation. Yet, the potential in San Jose is apparent; its roster is relatively young, and its slumping players from 2051 have shown flashes in the past. It’s another rangey team in the American League; anything between 75-90 wins wouldn’t be a shock.
SEA - Corbin Ray Jenson was worth a billion dollars before he even developed any sort of game power, and now that he hit five this past season, that portion of his game has arrived. The organization itself spent the offseason spending money on any possible bat that could drive him in, but that wasn’t the issue with the 2051 Mariners. It still has a rotation problem outside of Kingsley, and the bullpen is one misstep away from David Childs pitching meaningful innings. Seattle will eventually realize that now is the time to take advantage of the Jenson window and have a massive deadline that the organization has proven capable of, but as it stands right now, they are also in that pile of maybe teams in the AL.
VAN - The Vespers are a step ahead of the remainder of their division counterparts. With no Yeong, they have fully leaned into the “no control, no problem” rotation philosophy behind Schneider. It hasn’t failed them yet, and it’s impossible with excellent defense to back them up when they do allow contact. As long as the bats are good, the Vespers will remain a premier contender for the AL Pennant.
National League
NL East
New York Mets +#
London Lions -
Philadelphia Phillies --
Washington Nationals ---
LON - It’s easy to say that the Lions took advantage of a division with a tailoring Mets team and two tanking franchises, but they’re still talented enough to merit credit for their success. That said, mediocre defense in the back of a pitching staff that gives up quite a bit of contact is likely to be a mess, and with the Mets active this offseason, that might be enough to push the Lions out of first place in this division.
NYM - After two years of blank stares, the Mets were active this offseason and look to return to some form of contention. Of course, they’re doing that with aging veterans (and future Hall of Famers) all around, which is a concern for the long-term future, and the rotation doesn’t give as much hope as the glory days Queens rotations did. However, the Mets have the resources and the reputation to pick up who they want to solidify a postseason push, and unlike the last few years, that is exactly what they will do.
PHI - I don’t think it’s a secret: Philadelphia overtly telling you they are not looking to win. However, the right pieces connecting could lead to a passably bad team rather than a historically bad one. With the way it has collected youth over the last few years, combined with its aggressiveness for the younger free agents, it seems to be a matter of “when” the Phillies have a Toronto-like super push of its own.
WAS - The biggest difference between the Phillies and Nationals is that the latter still has a surplus of major league talent that it should probably look to trade. Through no fault of its own, current management, Washington still has quite a bit of work to do before it can turn itself into a contender on the merit of a loaded farm system. In other words, expect a really bad season from the Nationals, and be genuinely surprised at any less than 100 losses.
NL North
Chicago Cubs ++#
Pittsburgh Pirates +
Montreal Expos +
Cincinnati Reds ---
CHC - With Montreal’s extracurriculars and transition to new ownership, the Cubs (and subsequently, the Pirates) look to take advantage of that. They signed Sancho to secure an elite middle infield duo and inked Lomman Fernandez to be a formidable ace. The Expos could still be the top of the class in the NL North, but the Cubs show that they will not be a pushover as the Zyskowski-Bryant Jr. window wanes.
CIN - The Reds will be the worst team in baseball and STILL need consistent leadership through these tough times…not much left to say that hasn’t been said for the last five years.
MON - Montreal’s early push to contention granted them a National League pennant and memories to come, but the contracts they signed and eventual ownership change has led to uncertainty. Four rookies are scheduled to get everyday playing time in the Expos’ lineup, and lineup construction resembles much of 1952 rather than 2052. Still, there’s more than enough superstar talent between Trout, Summers, and Becket, and proper management should keep the team in NL North contention at least through this season.
PIT - This is probably the best Dale Waller-built Pirates team that we’ve seen in quite a while, which is a bold statement even with the current roster. The good: Albinson is Albinson, but there is protection behind him throughout the lineup. The bad: after Cy Young winner Anthony Rich, the rotation is one mixed bag and three starters that wouldn’t start for any other contender. With that said, the division is weak enough for any flaws that exist in Pittsburgh to be moot and lead to the first Pirates postseason appearance in eight years.
NL South
St. Louis Cardinals ++#
Houston Astros +#
Atlanta Braves -
Arizona Diamondbacks --
ARI - Sometimes you need a team like the Diamondbacks in your life, a team that’s just there. Someone has to take our money in a salary floor sport, right? This is me being nice and saying, despite Arizona’s active offseason, it's still a mediocre team. NL South White Sox is no longer applicable because the Diamondbacks aren’t as unpredictable, the roster is quite young, and the White Sox are now just bad, but the principle remains the same.
ATL - The Braves showed two things last offseason: 1) trade deadline moves still work, and 2) last dance stories thrive in sports. Yet, despite winning a World Series, the Braves spent all offseason trying to micromanage a roster together. The result is a team that could still make the postseason as long as they’re in the National League, but one that will certainly not be repeating as champions and may ultimately prove that 2051 was a last shot, successful attempt at winning a championship.
HOU - Back-to-back years of underperforming based on PYTH record (we predicted this last year) will have dampening effects on the ol’ morale. That said, Houston’s graces are better this season. Its two most contentious wild card contenders both got worse, while they solidified the left side of the infield this year. Talent-wise, it’s around the same as the previous two seasons, but sometimes, it may just take others around you slowing down for you to finally prosper.
STL - St. Louis spent the early part of the offseason solidifying its rotation and bullpen, but its most pivotal move didn’t come until the very end, trading for world-class centerfielder Idris Bridges. Suddenly, a top-tier rotation is given a world-class defense behind it. Any offensive expectations are tampered with because of the spacious MPG House outfield, but after its breakthrough in 2051, the Cardinals are poised for a run this upcoming season.
NL West
San Francisco Giants ++#
Los Angeles Dodgers ++#
Las Vegas Gamblers -
San Diego Padres --
LV - The move that seemed to be brewing for a little bit happened. Las Vegas is now Samen-less. In the long term, this may be beneficial, as the Gamblers are just too far behind other teams in terms of money to spend. Both parties seemed to recognize that. That said, it’s hard to say that they got BETTER in the immediate term. They used that money on some good pieces, and Jose Alcantara’s bat could defrost from the Las Vegas heat, but it will have to be a wait until we see it projection.
LAD - Two things can be true: the Dodgers are still an elite team, and this is the worst they have been in a long while. Let’s piece it together: the elite LA defense it always prided itself on is now nowhere close to such, and even if it’s a staff that doesn’t need it as much, it could be a deterrent. That said, they can hit…boy, can this lineup scare you. One of, if not the best in the business, Los Angeles has the power to power their way into a lot of wins, and the pitching staff is elite enough to not care about who’s behind them. We will continue to see the Dodgers in the postseason; it’s just a matter of getting over the hump.
SD - We are entering year five of the Du-Ri Park era, the Padres still haven’t found a way to build a damn thing around him, and now I’m just copying and pasting from the previous season previews. That should tell you all you need to know.
SF - The short answer would be to say that the Giants are still an elite team despite losing Gannon and Marmelejo, among others. The offense is still among the very elite in the sport, and we have seen how the ball carries at AT&T Park. However, the pitching staff is more of a concern than it may look, especially when there’s below-average play on the field behind it. Pencil them in for the postseason and a potential deep postseason run, but improving one of those two things has to be a priority come July.
