Season 28 ALL-STAR GAME RECAP
Hipolito Pena of the Iced Teas retired all three men he faced in ASG29 in Mudville.
***NOTE - this recap contains spoilers. If you’d rather watch the replay first, you can find a link to it in the Message Centre in the blue box on the right hand side of the league home page. Happy reading!***
The BNBL stars gathered in Mudville for the 29th annual All Star Classic.
Mudville’s owner, Dommod, welcomed the stars and other guests with open arms and not much else. There’s really nothing to do in Mudville except play baseball, drink beer, and visit the “Casey at the Bat” Museum, where there is a reading of Ernest Thayer’s 1888 poem every half hour on the half hour by one of the local residents.
Sometimes Dommod takes a turn reciting the poem, but it’s usually after a visit to the Mudville Pub, so he usually gets mixed up, forgets the words, and gets booed off the stage. But they still love him in Mudville – always have and always will. He’s brought a great tradition of mediocre baseball to the town and they will be forever grateful. Not to mention the fact that his Nine have won three BNBL championships, in Seasons 13, 24, and 28, making them the reigning champs. So the booing is always mixed with good-natured ribbing, some cheers, offers of another pint on the house, and free pub pretzels for life, which he hates.
Anyway, on to the big game. The details are a bit sketchy for two reasons. First, the Commish has forgotten most of what happened at the game since it was so long ago. And second, the official BNBL notetaker dropped his copy of the game details in the mud on his way from the stadium back to his car and they were 90% unreadable.
Nevertheless, we have been able to piece together a few details.
The first pitch was thrown out by a local elder who once got an autograph from Muddy Ruel but can’t find it anymore. The national anthem was sung by another local elder who used to entertain at the pub and once attended a minor B league game with her parents in Keokuk, Iowa where Mudcat Grant started for the Keokuk Kernels of the Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League (circa 1955). She’s super old now. The anthem did not go well, but the folks of Mudville never seem to mind that kind of thing. They’re just happy to be alive and watching baseball.
The game was as boring as watching mud dry, but the fans still had a marvelous time. There were only 10 hits in the contest, or possibly 70 (the boxscore is smeared with mud and it’s a bit hard to tell).
Chris Young of the Ghost Players led off the 3rd inning with a solo home run to give the home team (South Pacific) the early lead. The pitching was excellent through the first half of the game. There were a number of three-up, three-down innings for both sides, including by the NorthEast-Atlantic’s Bruce Chen, Rubby De La Rosa, and Dolf Luque (of the Mud Hens), as well as by Rube Melton of the home side.
In the top of the 6th inning, Vixen rookie Ryan Langerhans doubled to start the frame. Joe Lahoud then walked. Two fielder’s choices later, Langerhans stepped on home plate to tie the game at one. Perhaps the fielders should have made better choices.
During the 7th inning stretch, the mayor of Mudville, Lester P. Bockwinkel, sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”, and everyone in attendance was given a free Mississippi Mud Pie. That’s the kind of down-home southern hospitality that you can expect whenever you visit Dommod and the good folks of Mudville. Thanks, Dom!
In the top of the 8th, with the score still knotted at one, Langerhans doubled again to start off the inning, his 3rd hit of the game. After Rocky Biddle walked Jon Nunnally, Willy Aybar of the Mud Hens smashed a hanging Biddle curve-ball over the bleachers and into the mud pit that hosts Mudville’s annual Tri-County Mud Wrestling Tournament and Festival.
The home team would go quietly in the 8th and 9th, managing just a Kevin Orie single with two out in the 9th. Final score – NorthEast-Atlantic 4, South Pacific 1.
With the victory, the NorthEast-Atlantic squad broke the SouthPacific’s three-game winning streak, and regain the lead in the all-time series, now leading 15-14.
The ASG MVP was Ryan Langerhans of the Minneapolis Vixen. Langerhans went 3 for 3 with a single, two doubles, a walk, and two runs scored!
Next season, ASG30 will be hosted by in780 and the Pilots in Seattle.
Thanks for reading the recap! And have a great rest of the season!
Gus

After Season 20 in the BNBL, we held our first Hall of Fame vote, and the first group of players was added to the BNBL Hall of Fame. We've since had ballots after Seasons 21 through 27, and there will be another HOF ballot after every future season. Eligibility requirements - player must be retired. That's it. Oh, and they must also be less bad than many other BNBL players. (New players will be added to the ballot each season. If you think I've missed someone worthy of the honour, let me know, and he may be added to future ballots). To gain entry to the Hall, a player must receive a vote from at least 50% of the voters or finish in the top two (plus ties) among vote-getters on the ballot.

Welcome to the BNBL (Bad News Bears League)
Even if your name is Gross, you can still play (and star!) in the Bad News Bears League
See how these "Average Joes" might have fared if they didn't have to face Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax, Lou Gehrig, or Babe Ruth.
Hitters have to have:
less than 1.000 combined AVG and OPS
but also have a .275 AVG or lower
and less than .800 OPS
(oh, and a maximum Speed of 7 as well)
Pitchers need to have a WHIP of 1.40 or higher.
The Basics:
16 Teams
8 teams make the playoffs (4 division winners and 4 Wild Cards)
(gives more teams a chance and keeps it interesting!)
162 Game Schedule
No progressions
Fatigue: On
5-Man Rotation
Minimum ABs/IPs: 50 ABs (no IP minimum)
Any season can be used that fits the minimum/maximum requirements (see above)
Players will retire after 13 seasons (there are exceptions to that - see Rules Page)
See Rules Page for more information
