PC (March) Madness :: 2020

goldencane14 is our 2020 PC (March) Madness Champion of the world! Congratulations to goldencane.

goldencane's RF Chennedy Carter (Guard :: Texas A&M Aggies) has been named Tournament MVP. Included in her .303 BA, 11 HRs, and 19 RBIs were multiple clutch hits. It seemed every one of her 19 RBI's tied the game or put goldencane in the lead. And, even with a minus 1.6 dWar, Carter D'd up, only allowing one misplay lead to a hit, with zero errors.

SamWhitworth's Kerry Blackshear Jr. (Forward :: Florida Gators) wins The Tournament Cy Young. A lone loss, in the Finals, was the only blotch on his 6-1 record. He finished The Tournament with a 1.86 ERA and 0.72 WHIP in 58 IPs.

goldencane scored a 9-2 victory to close the Finals and cut down the nets at the Bacci Center. The revelry in the city of 13E is expected to stretch well into mid-June, in a virtual world void of social distancing.

Congratulations to SamWhitworth for being the 2020 runner-up. In the series for third place, LeeJ has won the series 4-2.

Bey blanks 03W :: with 6-0 shutout

03W :: is hoping not to see Tyler Bey again for a long while. Bey went the distance, leading 09N :: to a 6-0 victory. Skylar Mays recorded 4 hits. | Box

March Madness Finals Highlights

Game Four

■ goldencane14's offense has been timely and consistent throughout The Tournament, through to the Finals last, closing game. Winning the game 9-2 sent the 13th seed from the East to the top of the PC Tounrmanet mountain for the next year. The new, undisputed PC Tournament Champion, goldencane14..

■ In the series for 3rd Place.... LeeJ broke a 2-2 tie in the game with a 7th inning 2-run HR from Pritchard to even the series at 2-2.

Game Three

■ SamWhitworth is running into the hottest team in The Tournament on another hot streak. SamWhitworth grabbed a 4-2 lead going into the 8th, but, this time, goldencane didn't need any HRs for the comeback, as goldencane scored a run on a triple in the 8th, and then three more runs in the ninth on walk, walk, pop out, ground ball to score a run when the runner beat the throw home, wild pitch to score a run, walk, strike out, hard single. One single, three walks, three wild pitches, and three runs scored for the 6-4 win and 3-0 series lead.

■ In the series for 3rd Place.... jaykuntz got a dramatic 4-3 win by tying the score in the bottom of the 9th with an HR, and then winning in the bottom of the 11th on a double then single. jaykuntz leads the series 2-1 over LeeJ.

Game Two

■ In the bottom of the 6th, goldencane watched his hitters go single, HR (Crutcher), HR (Quickley), HR (Carter), pop out, HR (Cowan Jr.). The only 5 runs scored in the game came on back-to-back-to-back-to-popout-to-back HRs. On the mound, Blackshear Jr. and 1 RP downed Blackshear Jr. and 1 RP for the win.

■ In the series for 3rd Place.... jaykuntz got a 4-4, 2 HR, 6 RBI game from The Tournament's most dominant overall power hittter, SS Jalen Crutcher (Guard :: Dayton Flyers). jaykuntz won the game 9-3 to even the series at 1-1..

Game One

■ goldencane14 got two 2-run homers in the first three innings off of SamWhitworth's SP Tyler Bey, then goldencane's Tyler Bey made the lead stand up with 8.2 innings of 3-run ball.

■ In the series for 3rd Place.... LeeJ got three solo HRs in four batters in the 2nd inning, and Tyler Bey pitched eight innings strong to give LeeJ the win over jaykuntz18.

Final Four Highlights/Lowlights

Game Seven

■ Blackshear Jr. (Forward :: Florida Gators) had a great day in the Final Four as he notched the win in both Game 7s. Not bad for an SP with a Rank below 50.

■ goldencane got anoter 3-run homer from his RF Chennedy Carter, this one coming in the 1st inning. jaykuntz18 has seen enough of Carter as she hit 5 HRs in the 7-game series, driving in 8 runs, including 3 RBI games in both games 6 & 7. The final score of the game was 6-2, so the four-run first inning from goldencane ended up being too much to overcome for jaykuntz's squad.

■ SamWhitworth stuck with his home run threat Crutcher, even though Crutcher the CLutcher was only 1-for-27 in the previous seven games. Leading 4-1 over LeeJ in the top of the 7th, Crutcher put the game away with a grand slam to put SamWhitworth up 8-1. LeeJ got a 3-run bomb from pinch hitter Tre Jones in the ninth to bring the final to 8-4. SamWhitworth moves on to the Finals.

Game Six

■ Both series push to a 1-game now or never finale, the greatest games in sport: Game 7.

■ LeeJ got a game-tying solo HR from Bella Alarie (hitting .185 in The Tournament) in the bottom of the 8th. LeeJ and SamWhitworth went to the 10th inning tied at 7, then in the top of the 10th, LeeJ got bloop single, ground out, bloop single, single to knock in a run, then a grounder with the runner beating the throw home. The clutch CF Skylar Mays (the hero in Game 4), knocked in the all-important run with the single, despite a .143 BA in The Tournament.

■ goldencane, on the brink of exiting The Tournament, got 8.2 innings of 1-run ball from the familiar SP Tyler Bey to send the series to Game 7. LF Chennedy Carter hit her 4th homer in four games, knocking in all three runs in the 3-1 goldencane win.

Game Five

■ SamWhitworth had 9 hits to LeeJ's 11 hits, but SamWhitworth's hitters were patient enough to also draw 9 walks. The final of 8-3 put SamWhitworth up 3-2 in the series.

■ jaykuntz18 got 8.1 innings of 5-hit, 2-run ball from SP Saddiq Bey, which was enough to earn the win 6-3 over goldencane. jaykuntz is now up in the series 3-2.

Game Four

■ Both series, after Game 4, squared at 2-2.

■ LeeJ was down 5-4 in the bottom of the 8th, six outs away from a 3-1 deficit in the series, but CF Skylar Mays hit a 2-run home run to put LeeJ up 6-5. Mays finished the game hitting .140, so the game-winning HR was a shock to even the most ardent LeeJ fans. LeeJ's RPs made the lead stand up, and the series went to 2-2.

Game Three

■ jaykuntz went with a surprising SP in Game 3, putting Sam Merrill into the fire. Merrill came in with a 1-2 record and a 6.75 ERA in The Tournament, and, then, fired 8.1 innings of 1-hit, 1-run ball to put jaykuntz up 2-1 in the series.

■ LeeJ got both good pitching (Blackshear Jr. with a 1.71 ERA got the win) and timely hitting to get the series to 2-1. With the 8-3 win, LeeJ cut SamWhitworth's series lead to 2-1.

Game Two

■ SamWhitowrth goes up 2-0 in the series with a shutout from Blackshear Jr. With 11 K's and only three hits allowed, Blackshear Jr. is now sporting a 1.02 ERA in The Tournament for SamWhitworth.

■ All the runs were scored in the 7th or later in a 4-2 jaykukntz win that evens the series at 1-1 with goldencane.

Game One

■ Each game featured a 5-run inning from the winning team, with 3 of the 4 teams running T. Bey out as SP. Bey got the win in one of the games.

■ goldencane14 got a full offensive team effort in the 9-3 win as every starting hitter had at least one hit and seven of the hitters had at least 1 RBI.

■ SamWhitworth won Game 1 with a 6-3 score, and hit one solo HR for one of the runs, but the 5-run inning did not include a HR, as his hitters went walk, single, walk, single, K, double, pop out, double, fly out. 2 walks, 2 singles, 2 doubles. 5 runs in, 1 win secured.

FIN

Elite Eight

Game Seven

■ Sam Whitworth got another dominant SP performance, with Blackshear Jr. and 3 RPs firing a 4-hit shutout. Winning Game 7 over skooler1 with a 2-0 score means SamWhitworth won a 7-game series in the Elite 8 by scoring a total of 13 runs, winning 3 of the games by shutout. Not much an opponent can do when the pitching is so good.

■ goldencane14 and fullerr44 went to extra innings in their Game 7. In the top of the 10th, goldencane got a two-out three-run bomb from LF Chennedy Carter to put the score at 5-2, which ended up being the final. On fullerr's squad, Carter, playing RF and batting lead-off, went 0-3 with 2 K's. goldencane called on RP D. Culver for the final two innings, with Culver sporting a ghastly 7.71 ERA went he entered the Game 7 spotlight. Culver fired two hitless, shutout innings to notch the win and send goldencane to the Final Four.

■ Interesting Final Four fact: All four GMs that advanced to the Final Four have more all-time games played in PC than the GMs they defeated head-to-head in the Elite Eight.

Game Six

■ jaykuntz18 joins LeeJ in the Final Four. Two other series are going to the most exciting games in sports: Game 7.

■ SamWhitworth wins Game 6 to even the series with skooler behind another dominant (1-hit) performance from Tyler Bey. SamWhitworth's Bey is now 5-0 in five starts in The Tournament with a 0.98 WHIP and 1.32 ERA. That's 17.2 innings of shutout pitching in the Elite Eight for SamWhitworth's Bey. Game 7, coming up.

■ goldencane had 7 hits to fullerr44's 6 hits, the difference in the 6-4 score was two of goldencane's hits were 3-run homers by RF Pritchard and 2b Cowan Jr. The series is knotted at 3-3. Game 7, coming up.

Game Five

■ LeeJ defeats todorojo 3-2 to win the series 4-1 and be the first GM to punch a ticket to the 2020 Final Four.

Game Four

■ All 4 series move to a Game 5. skooler evened his series with SamWhitworth, but the other three Elite 8 series are at 3-1 after Erwin23 avoided a sweep.

■ todorojo lost an exciting 2-1 game to LeeJ when LeeJ's defense saved a sure run in the bottom of the 6th. With the score 2-1 in the 6th, LeeJ got a stellar defensive play from 2b Cowan Jr. to rob a hit on a ground ball, after an easy grounder recorded the second out, todorojo's Robinson-Earl smacked a triple, but no runner on meant no run home. Now, with two outs and a runner on third, LeeJ got another stellar bit of D as 1b Sutton robbed a hit on a grounder that would have scored the runner on third. LeeJ made the 2-1 lead stand up and took a 3-1 lead in the series.

Game Three

■ 3 series go to 2-1, while jaykuntz has pushed Erwin23 to the brink with a 10-2 win to go up 3-0 in their series.

■ goldencane scored fewer runs than in each of the first two games, but when SP Bey tosses a nine-inning 11 K shutout, not too many runs are needed.

■ skooler's Petrusev maintained his perfect 0.00 ERA in The Tournament, combining with Q.McKnight to toss a 1-run game and get skooler back in the series. SamWhitworth leads 2-1.

Game Two

■ 3 series go to 2-0, with LeeJ and todorojo knotted at 1-1.

■ SamWhitworth's pitching throughout The Tournament has been timely, and he got another stellar start from an SP and solid relief, with Blackshear Jr. and seven RPs tossing a 3-hitter to go up 2-0 on skooler.

Game One

■ SamWhitworth's Tyler Bey is now a perfect 4-0 in the tournament (1.69 ERA) with a 2-0 shutout of skooler1's Tyler Bey (1.99 ERA) who only gave up four hits in the loss.

■ LeeJ also got a gem from Tyler Bey, with 8 innings of shutout ball in the win. todorojo's ace Blackshear gave up 3 ER to skyrocket his ERA to 1.41 for The Tournament.

■ fullerr44, despite striking out 12 times, broke up a 5-5 tie with 3 in the 8th inning to go up in the series 1-0.

■ An extra inning thriller won by jaykuntz. Down 3-2 going into the 9th, jaykuntz got a tying HR from Skylar Mays, then put up a run in the top of the 11th to take the lead.

Sweet Sixteen

Game Six

■ Zero Game 7's in the Sweet 16, as the three series that went to 5 games, ended in 6.

■ LeeJ got a close-out no-hitter from Tyler Bey to move on the Elite 8. 9 K's and 3 BB's from Bey and two solo HR's from Pritchard sent the LeeJ faithful into a frenzy.

■ Leading 3-2 going in to the bottom of the 8th, sloss5's RP L. Garza held true to form and gave up three runs on three hits to Erwin23's batters. sloss5's Garza ends The Tournament with a 7.94 ERA. Erwin23's Garza, on the other hand, recorded the Save in this game and, to this point, has a 1.50 ERA in The Tournament.

■ Crutcher 3-Run Bomb watch: Crutcher hit it in the 1st inning for todorojo. An hbp, a single, then Crutcher launched his signature three-run homer. bip's pitchers gave up 4 in the first, and todorojo's pitchers made the lead stand up.

Game Four

■ Three of the series at 3-0 extended to 3-1, with skooler the first into the Elite Eight with a sweep. But, overall the Sweet 16 has only one series at 2-2, so six GMs are facing a 3-1 hole.

■ The Round of 64 and the Round of 32 both had multiple GMs bounce back from down 3-0 or 3-1. The six GMs up 3-1 now are hoping to not be part of that stat.

■ The lone 2-2 series got there when bip edged out todorojo 1-0. bip's 3 hits produced the 1 run, while his pitcher's held todorojo to 5 hits.

■ Crutcher 3-Run Bomb watch: goldencane edged out MikeSpaz 5-4 to take a 3-1 series lead, riding a 7th inning Crutcher 3-run homer to the win.

Game Three

■ Half of the series are at 3-0, which puts half the field staring at a long trek back to even.

■ No exciting finishes, no overly dominant performances, a very non-highlight day for The Tournament. 3 of the 8 games went without a HR, which has been rare in the Big Dance.

Game Two

■ After Game 2, five of the eight Sweet 16 series are at 2-0.

■ SamWhitworth took a 2-0 lead in the series on a sac-fly walk-off in the bottom of the 10th, after SleazyE tied it in the 9th.

■ RitzCards2 may be confused, as LeeJ hung Ritz with only his second loss in The Tournament; Ritz has been so tough to beat, he even won an extra game in the Round of 32.

Game One

■ skooler1 put up 20 hits on jsmathiot's Tyler Bey and five RPs. Bey has been the ace for many GMs in The Dance, but jsmathiot's Bey has limped thru the tournament with a 1-2 record and 6.85 ERA.

■ ClassicOs and fullerr44 played a wild Game One, with Pritchard hitting a go ahead HR in the top of the 10th, then The Clutcher Crutcher hitting a 2-run HR in the bottom of the 10th for ClassicOs to notch the walk-off win.

Round of 32

Game Six

■ 7 Game 7's coming up, as only two GMs were able to close out in six games.

■ krtyler11 and fullerr44 played the most exciting of the Game 6 bouts, with the series ending up at 3-3. Tied 2-2 going into the tenth, fullerr scored 3 runs with three walks and two singles, but krtyler answered back in the bottom of the tenth with the unofficial subtitle of the tournament, the J. Crutcher late-inning three-run homer. Fullerr went back in the lead in the top of the 11th with two singles and a sac fly, then had RP L.Stevens, who had given up the HR in the 10th, retire the side on three straight ground outs to take the win and push this series to seven.

■ jimgriddy, TheGoldenFog, and todorojo have all won three straight to knot their series at 3-3, after falling into a 3-0 hole.

■ "The Natural" GoldenFog has now lasted longer than all four #1 seeds. TheFog scored 10 or more runs in the last three games to push the series with skooler1 to 7 games.

■ The family dynamic between jsmathiot and lasershow has not got in the way of an exciting series as jsmathiot pushed the series to seven games from a 3-1 series deficit.

■ sloss5 has given us PC's version of biting the hand that feeds by ousting gbacci, the last #1 seed, from the tournament. Turns out, it was better to be a double-one seed in the tournament than a #1, as all four #11 seeds are still able to make the Sweet 16, with SleazyE (11) already in.

Game Five

■ 5 more GMs booked their entourages into the Sweet 16, which leaves 9 spots still to be decided.

■ kds4316 has completed the reversal, putting bip on the brink of elimination. After being down 2-0, kds has strung together 3 straight wins, including this two-hit, one-run gem from Petrusev and four RPs.

■ ClassicOs closed out soccerstar to bring his all-time Custom League total wins to 8.

■ jimgriddy, TheGoldenFog, and todorojo have now snapped off two straight to climb 2/3 of the way out of the 3-0 hole.

■ Another #1 seed fell as MikeSpaz topped yankeebb to move into the Sweet 16. gbacci, our lone #1 seed still in the field, also took an L to make Game 6 a now or never contest with sloss5.

Game Four

■ 4 of the 6 teams facing elimination pulled out wins to get to Game 5. On the other hand, 7 of the teams down 2-1 after Game 3 are now down 3-1, which means 11 of the remaining 14 series have one GM teetering on elimination.

■ todorojo scored 5, 5, and 4 in the first three games, but the pitchers couldn't make the runs stand up. Not that problem in Game 4, as todo put up 14 runs on 13 hits to win 14-7 and stay in the series.

■ There's a streaker on the loose. Williams_482 put the clamps on the streaker, as JaySlater saw his tournament go 3 losses in a row, 4 wins in a row, 4 losses in a row. Williams and RitzCards2 are the first to move on to The Sweet 16.

■ Crutcher the Clutcher. krtyler11's turn to watch his J. Crutcher hit a late inning game winner. Crutcher hit two 3-run homers in the game, including one in the top of the ninth to vault krtyler from losing 6-5 to winning 8-6. The series with fullerr44 is knotted at 2-2.

■ bbfan20013 has to be considering firing the hitting coach, as bbfan's pitchers have pitched well enough to win in 2 of the 3 losses, but the bats have gone ice cold. Due credit to SamWhitworth's staff, as big numbers are being put up all around the tournament, but SamW's pitchers nailed down their second shut-out of the round.

■ LeeJ and skooler1 are both trying to end Cinderella's dance, as they both hold 3-1 leads over the remaining 16 seeds.

Game Three

■ Four Alarm Fire: hani's bullpen blew up in flames for the second straight game, turning a 5-2 lead into a 6-5 loss to SleazyE, with the all-too-familiar now Crutcher three-run homer being the big blow.

■ RitzCards2 continues to see balls bounce his way, while his lead-off hitter is 1-12 with 0 runs in the series, Ritz was one of 6 GMs to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

■ Whose Cumberland Showed Up? yankeebb's SP Cumberland (2.61 ERA) got the win over MikeSpaz's Cumberland (8.10 ERA) to pull yankee to his first win in the series.

■ sloss5 watched CF T.Alexander save four hits vs. gbacci, helping sloss earn a second win in the series.

■ jrusso used 7 pitchers to grab a needed win against Erwin23, with Homesley and his 9.82 ERA recording a single out for the win. Erwin leads 2-1 in the series.

■ Crutcher Again. jaykuntz got a three-run homer from Crutcher in the top of the 11th to put jimgriddy on the edge.

■ lasershow with the walk-off Wild Pitch... or, more accurately, jsmathiot had T.Forrest lose grip and fire a wild pitch to give lasershow the win and a 2-1 series lead.

■ fullerr44 knocked out 10 hits to krtyler's 13, but 8 walks to his batters and some clutch hits gave fullerr 12 runs to krtyler's 5; fullerr holds a 2-1 series lead.

Game Two

■ A-Mays-ing Walk-Off I: After hani scored 5 in top of the 9th to storm back and grab the lead at 6-5, SleazyE squeaked across two runs in the bottom of 9th, with the winner on a sac fly from defensive replacement Skylar Mays.

■ A-Mays-ing Walk-Off II: Tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the 9th, jaykuntz got a walk-off HR from Skylar Mays to go up 2-0 on jimgriddy.

■ Walk-Off III, in a pinch: bip had two pinch runners score two runs (including beating a throw at home on a ground ball) behind four pinch hitters to notch a walk-off win over kds4316.

■ Deja Vu: hitter scored the second consecutive 8-5 victory over todorojo. This 2nd game was tied 2-2 going into the 13th.

■ Shut-Outs: ClassicOs shutout soccerstar832 to even the series at 1-1. Second shut-out in the series.

■ 1st Seeds Watch: yankeebb took a second loss to MikeSpaz, but gbacci scored 9 runs without a HR to even his series with sloss5 at 1-1.

■ Family Face-Off: lasershow evened his series with papa jsmathiot at 1-1.

Game One

■ MikeSpaz and yankeebb traded ninth inning bullpen meltdowns to go to extra innings where a walk, pinch-run steal, and single plated the winning run for MikeSpaz.

■ ClassicOs had ducks on the pond all game, with 10 lob, but couldn't get a run across as soccerstar's pitchers worked out of jams to notch a shutout victory.

■ 1st seeds are not the place to be in The Tournament as the only two left -- gbacci and yankeebb -- lost the opener in the Round of 32.

■ Flip sides: bip and kds4316 put up nine total hits and 1 total run in a bip victory, while skooler1 and TheGoldenFog knocked out 30 hits and 20 runs in a skooler win.

■ Sabotage, as a 16th seed, has now won 5 in a row, topping LeeJ in the first game.

Two other #1 seeds, gbacci (01W) and rfb60609 (01N) have gone from 3-0 leads to 3-2 nail-biters as jwbsavages (16W) and Sabotage (16N) look for more magic in Game 6.

Buzzer Beaters

■ LeeJ (09N), losing 4-1 to SinCityMarauder (08N) going into the ninth, scored 4 runs on 3 straight BBs followed by a double and a single. The comeback gave LeeJ a 3-2 series lead.

■ bhgray (06W) and jimgriddy (11W) played a 13-inning slugfest where both scored in the 12th before jimgriddy took the 3-2 series lead with the winning run in the 13th off bhgray's 8th of 9 pitchers.

Cinderella-est Stories

16S over an all-time great PC'er at 01S will forever be the definitive Cinderella story in PCMM lore. If this tourament were to run 1,000 more times, no bigger upset would be recorded. Congratulations to TheGoldenFog for beating enormous odds.

Game Four

Individuals:

■ FantasyTease (09E) got a 1-hit shutout from Kiana Williams and 2 RPs to tie the series at 2-2. One of the very few strong pitching performances.

■ Polski (08S) rode two solo HRs from B. Alarie to a 2-1 victory to tie the series at 2-2.

Highlight Reels

■ ih8jhawks (04W) and Erwin23 (13W) used 16 pitchers, combined, in their 16-10 conga line around the bases. Erwin23 leads the series 3-1 in an upset bid.

■ 5 of 7 teams averted a sweep, including Sabotage (16N), who won 2-1 in a walk-off in the bottom of the 9th.

■ Just Result: Teams with line-ups not set are 1-6 in The Tournament.

Cinderella-est Stories

14S over 03S is currently wearing the glass slipper.

Game Three

Individuals:

■ sloss5 (09W) had Saddiq Bey fire a complete game no-hitter, with 12 K's and 4 BB's to take a 2-1 lead in the series

■ RitzCards' (12N) RF Pritchard went yard 3x to lead his team to a 3-0 lead in the series. In two starts, Pritchard is 5-8 with 4 HRs and 6 RBIs for Ritz.

Buzzer Beaters

kds4316 (10N), down 5-4 into the 9th, made two quick outs, then went hbp, pinch-hit 2b, walk, bloop single to score the walk-off win and a 2-1 series lead.

Highlight Reels

■ fullerr44 (11E) poured on 16 runs on 17 hits to take a 3-0 series lead. Going 17-40, the bats were sizzling.

■ Though both teams slapped 12 hits, BearDillon (15W) plated 13 runs with JaySlater's (02W) squad getting stranded on base, driving in 4 of their teammates.

■ UnJust Result: The one team that has yet to set a line-up notched a win with a dominant pitching performance from S. Bey. Line-ups not set are now 1-5 in The Tournament.

Cinderella-est Stories

Cinderella's pumpkin may have to add a trailer as three high seeds are on the verge of being swept: 16S v 01S, 15W v 02W, and 14S v 03S are all at 3-0 going into Game 4.

Game Two

Individuals:

■ jaykuntz (03W) had Blackshear Jr. give up a lone two-out single in a one-hit shutout. 13 Ks, 8 IPs, and the win to even the series.

■ LF Wheeler went 4-4 with 2 HRs and is hitting a sleek .714 for pskeane (05W).

Buzzer Beaters

Highlight Reels

■ Wearing It Out: After two games, chickenheads (04E) and goldencane (13E) have combined for 51 runs. A 15-11 barnburner followed their 16-9 thriller. After two games, chickenheads has six SPs who need rest, with three of them needing 4 days.

■ Just Results: The two teams that, for sure, didn't set line-ups before Games 1 & 2 are a combined 0-4.

Cinderella-est Stories
