Season 31 ALL-STAR GAME RECAP

Story Photo
Bobby Crosby of the Chiefs went deep for the home team in ASG31 in Springfield.
ASG31 – Springfield (sort of)

***NOTE - this recap contains spoilers. If you’d rather watch the replay first, you can find a link to it in the Message Centre in the blue box on the right hand side of the league home page. Happy reading!***

The Season 31 All-Star Game finally got underway, not in Springfield, where it was originally scheduled, but in nearby Capital City, home of the Capital City Goofball. Unfortunately, a leak at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant necessitated the relocation. The teams and fans were stranded at the stadium for hours while alternate plans were worked out. To keep fans entertained, Montgomery Burns and Waylon Smithers took turns at the microphone, Burns telling stories from his youth, Smithers singing show tunes. The leak wasn’t too serious, just contaminating the lake and the local drinking water, which was not unusual for Springfield. Bottled water was made available to the home team, while the South Pacific side, unaware of the contamination, continued to drink the tap water and dine on the platters of freshly fried, three-eyed fish.

The teams were taken by bus to Capital City. One bus, driven by Otto Mann, took a wrong turn and ended up in Shelbyville by mistake. Luckily, there wasn’t anyone important on board, just South Pacific back-up players, as well as Barney Gumble, Reverend Lovejoy, the Comic Book Guy, Cletus and Brandine Spuckler, and the delegations from Sin City and Savannah. Reverend Lovejoy spent the entire trip chastising SCM, and trying to convince him to change the name of his team from the Sin City Silver Sox to the New Jerusalem Holy Rollers. RevEJB was crammed in between Barney and Comic Book Guy, and was in a foul mood throughout most of the 90-minute trip, but had calmed down somewhat by the time they arrived at Capital City Stadium. His mood worsened, however, when he realized that his specially priced second-row stadium seat put him directly behind a woman with impossibly tall blue hair, and her loud, bratty son.

On the field, there was a further delay as Groundskeeper Willie refused to allow the game to begin until he had properly prepared the field. The grass hadn’t been cut in over a month, so Willie borrowed a ride-on mower and cut the whole field himself, cursing non-stop. Luckily the crowd had no idea what he was saying, as his thick Scottish accent was indecipherable.

Finally, the teams arrived, the field was ready, and the pre-game festivities were nearing an end. The National Anthem was not sung, but rather, played, in a strange jazzy-blues style by Lisa Simpson on her saxophone. Half-way through the anthem, the crowd got a special treat, as the late Bleeding Gums Murphy appeared on the big screen, joining Lisa, and jazzing up the anthem even more, making it totally unrecognizable. The few fans who were still valiantly trying to sing along gave up completely at that point.

The first pitch was thrown out by Dancin’ Homer, mascot of the Springfield Isotopes. Rather, the first pitch was supposed to have been thrown out by Dancin’ Homer. Unfortunately, Sideshow Bob swooped in on a jetpack and intercepted the pitch just as it left Homer’s hand. Laughing maniacally, Bob jetted into the concourse area, knocking over Apu’s portable Quik-E-Mart stand on his way up and out of the stadium and he was not seen again. Apu had almost sold out of his 5-dollar “penny candy” and his special buy 1 get 1 free “not-that-tainted” meat sandwich, so he and his children left the scattered mess and sat down to enjoy the game.

Kent Brockman announced the starting lineups and special guest umpire, Chief Wiggums, yelled “Play Ball”.

Bill Monbouquette started for the home team, and had a scoreless first inning, giving up a single to Paul Householder but nothing else. Joe Hatten had a three-up, three-down first, although he looked a little uneasy on the mound, having overdone it at the three-eyed fish buffet earlier in the day. The ends of his fingers were glowing, but the trainer didn’t seem too concerned as he had a glowing forehead of his own to worry about.

Aaron Sele had a three-up, three down top of the 2nd, but Jack Quinn ran into some trouble in the bottom half of the second. Dan Pasqua led off with a double. After Melvin Nieves struck out, Steve Bilko singled to move Pasqua to third. Pasqua scored on a Bobby Crosby ground out to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Quinn looked quite woozy on the mound, but nobody seemed to notice. The trainers, coaching staff, and Quinn’s teammates were distracted by what can only be described as a blatant attempt by Isotopes’ management to sabotage the visitors and give the home team a decided advantage. Moe Szyslak, owner of Moe’s Tavern, had been allowed into the visitors’ clubhouse, where he set up a portable bar and was serving all-you-can-drink “South Pacific Specials” with little umbrellas and 4 ounces of vodka in each glass. There was a lineup from the dugout down the hall into the clubhouse throughout the whole game. (Note: After the game, Montgomery Burns and Sheikyerboudi, standing together in their matching Stuart Hughes Diamond Edition suits and diabolical grins, denied any wrongdoing, and any knowledge whatsoever of the clubhouse bar, which, the Sheik added, ended up costing them a pretty penny but was totally worth it.

Things were quiet until the top of the 4th, when the by-now-well-liquored-up visitors got to Dolf Luque (the Pride of Havana). Eddie Yost homered off the diminutive Cuban to tie the game. Chris Young followed with a double, and scored on a single by Wes Helms to give SouthPacific a 2-1 lead.

Dick Drott retired the home team with little trouble in the bottom of the 4th, surrendering just a walk to Pasqua. Isotope Bob Turley (who was voted on to the NEA squad) came on in the top of the 5th and had an easy 1-2-3 inning.

The home team tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run by Bobby Crosby, and later in the same inning, after a hit, an error, and a walk, Johnny Gooch gave the NEA the lead back with a run-scoring ground out.

In a very entertaining, back-and-forth affair, the visitors struck back in the top of the 6th. Kyle Farmer reached on an error, followed by an Eddie Yost single. Chris Young grounded into a double play, moving Farmer to 3rd, and then reliever J.D. Smart walked the next two batters to load the bases for Ellie Rodriguez. Unfortunately, Ellie couldn’t be found anywhere in the stadium (he was later discovered at Moe’s Tavern enjoying a few pints and watching the late innings on a grainy black-and-white TV Moe had hanging above the bar. Gregg Zaun was called on to pinch hit, and he rose to the occasion, smashing a 3-run double into the corner to give the visitors a 5-3 lead.

Meanwhile, Ned Flanders kept fans entertained with his collection of signs that he held up throughout the game from his seat right behind home plate. His signs included some predictable ones, the old faithful “John 3:16” and “Love Your Neighbor” as well as some clever offerings, such as “Lefties Rule, Righties Drool”, and “Thou Shalt Not Steal”, which he held up every time a runner reached first base.

Another Isotope reliever, Cionel Perez, gave the home-town fans something to cheer about as he retired both men he faced, one to end the 6th, and one to start the 7th.

In between Perez’s outs, the NEA drew closer in the bottom of the 6th when Steve Bilko doubled and then scored two batters later on a single by Rob Mackowiak, trimming the SP lead to 5-4.

The 7th inning saw the subs enter the game on both sides. Not much offense to report in the 7th.

The 7th inning stretch involved a fun rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” by Krusty the Klown, complete with his trademark laugh after each and every line, as well as a special 10-minute dance competition featuring Dancin’ Homer and the Capitol City Goofball atop the home team dugout. Neither participant made it past the 3-minute mark. Also part of the break was a “Race Around the Bases” sponsored by Duff Beer. Local Springfield children were invited to take part, with the winner receiving coupons for 10% off their next Duff purchase. Bart Simpson won in a photo finish over a hard-charging Nelson Muntz, who likely would have won if he hadn’t wasted precious time at the starting line punching four different competitors in the face just as the starting pistol sounded (Millhouse, Martin Prince (twice), and both Flanders boys, Rod and Todd).

The visitors threated to increase their lead in the top half of the 8th. After Chris Carter struck out to start the inning, Tsuyoshi Shinjo singled, and Ross Gload came to the plate. Gload hit a monster drive that looked destined to be a 2-run homer, but the ball somehow ran out of gas before reaching the fence and dropped harmlessly into the glove of the NEA outfielder. This may be unrelated, but some of the South Pacific owners were complaining after the game that, just as Gload’s mammoth shot was reaching its peak, high above Capital City Stadium, Mr. Burns switched on some high-capacity fans he had trucked in from Springfield. The fans generated 80 mph winds, which happened to be blowing in from left field towards home plate, potentially altering the flight path of Gload’s blast. Who can say.

The game remained 5-4 for the visitors heading to the bottom of the 9th with Vancouver’s Chad Bettis coming on to face the top of the order for the home team (albeit they were all substitutes at this point of the game, so not exactly the best players in BNBL history). Bettis got Ping Bodie to fly out to start the inning and needed only two more outs to lock down the victory.

But the NorthEast-Atlantic had other ideas. Troy O’Leary doubled and Jason Castro singled to put the tying run on 3rd and the go-ahead run on 1st. Ryan Rua of the Long Island Iced Teas stepped to the plate and smashed a game-tying double off the wall. The slow-moving Castro only got to 3rd base, but he scored the game-winning run when Nate Schierholtz hit a long enough sac fly for a walk-off win for the home team.

As the NEA celebrated, Bettis went into full meltdown mode in the visitors’ dugout. He broke a number of bats over a number of Gatorade jugs before Chief Umpire Wiggums not only ejected him from the already finished game, but also placed him under arrest. Bettis remains in a Capitol City cell while the Canadians’ brass attempt to free him in time for his next start.

Ryan Rua of Long Island was named the game’s MVP, finishing with a single and a double along with the game-tying RBI in the 9th.

With the victory, the NorthEast-Atlantic Conference takes a 16-15 lead in the all-time series. Next year’s game will be hosted by JSMathiot and the Chiefs in Charlestown.

Thanks for reading, and good luck in the 2nd half!
Gus

After Season 20 in the BNBL, we held our first Hall of Fame vote, and the first group of players was added to the BNBL Hall of Fame. We've since had ballots after Seasons 21 through 30, and there will be another HOF ballot after every future season. Eligibility requirements - player must be retired. That's it. Oh, and they must also be less bad than many other BNBL players. (New players will be added to the ballot each season. If you think I've missed someone worthy of the honour, let me know, and he may be added to future ballots). To gain entry to the Hall, a player must receive a vote from at least 50% of those who voted or finish in the top two (plus ties) among vote-getters on the ballot.

Welcome to the BNBL (Bad News Bears League)

Story Photo
Even if your name is Gross, you can still play (and star!) in the Bad News Bears League
The BNBL is the league for mediocre players to play against their peers.
See how these "Average Joes" might have fared if they didn't have to face Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax, Lou Gehrig, or Babe Ruth.

Hitters have to have:
less than 1.000 combined AVG and OPS
but also have a .275 AVG or lower
and less than .800 OPS
(oh, and a maximum Speed of 7 as well)

Pitchers need to have a WHIP of 1.40 or higher.

The Basics:
16 Teams
8 teams make the playoffs (4 division winners and 4 Wild Cards)
(gives more teams a chance and keeps it interesting!)
162 Game Schedule
No progressions
Fatigue: On
5-Man Rotation
Minimum ABs/IPs: 50 ABs (no IP minimum)
Any season can be used that fits the minimum/maximum requirements (see above)
Players will retire after 13 seasons (there are exceptions to that - see Rules Page)
See Rules Page for more information
