Charlie Montoyo Passes Away Doing What He Loved; Ford Sweaty Named New Manager
The organization is saddened — though admittedly not entirely surprised — to announce that longtime manager Charlie Montoyo passed away peacefully in the dugout this morning in Florida while watching pitchers and catchers report to spring training. He was 92 years old, though several players insisted he had been listed as “92” since at least 2033.
Montoyo was found in his usual seat, lineup card in hand, watching bullpen sessions with his trademark calm expression. Coaches initially believed he had simply fallen asleep, which had happened occasionally during long pitching changes over the years. It wasn’t until the third straight reliever reported and Montoyo didn’t signal for a fourth that staff realized something was different.
Doctors later confirmed he passed quietly, doing what he loved most: evaluating middle relievers and probably wondering why nobody could throw a consistent slider anymore.
Montoyo managed the club from 2020 through 2039. He remained committed to the game well into his tenth decade, routinely arriving at the ballpark before players, grounds crew, and in at least one case, the sunrise.
Team officials acknowledged that for years there had been a running assumption Montoyo might someday die in the dugout.
“Honestly, we figured this would’ve happened around 2034,” one longtime staff member admitted. “At some point, he just became part of the furniture. A very wise, lineup-making piece of furniture.”
Players remembered him fondly as steady, unflappable, and seemingly immune to the passage of time.
“Pitch clocks came and went. Robot umpires showed up. Three different stadium renovation plans happened,” one veteran said. “Charlie stayed exactly the same.”
Ownership released the following statement:
“Charlie Montoyo gave everything he had to this organization — including, ultimately, his final breath somewhere between the seventh bullpen fastball and a coach asking if he wanted coffee. We are comforted knowing he left us in the only place he ever truly wanted to be: the dugout.”
In accordance with Montoyo’s wishes — which were handwritten on the back of a lineup card sometime in 2036 — Ford Sweaty has been named the club’s new manager.
Sweaty will take over immediately and is expected to bring fresh leadership, modern energy, and a pulse.
The team will honor Montoyo throughout the season. His dugout seat will remain untouched on Opening Day, though coaches confirmed they will still ignore most of the bullpen suggestions he likely would have made.
Charlie Montoyo is survived by generations of players, coaches, fans, and at least four pitching prospects he was still “waiting on.”
Funeral arrangements are pending, though several players suggested simply leaving him in the dugout, where he probably would’ve preferred to stay anyway.
