San Diego Padres Win Championship!

Story Photo
NLCS MVP Lance McCullers
In a series in which the only game decided by more than one run was a 3-1 result in Game 1, the San Diego Padres topped the New York Mets in six games to win the team's first league championship.

The Padres entered the league as an expansion team in 1969 and proceeded to have eight straight 100-loss seasons, including a historically horrible 35-127 record in 1972. Later, they lost 124 games in 1974. Now, the long-suffering fans in San Diego have a National League champion.

Series MVP, closer Lance McCullers, saved three of the Padres' four wins. In Game 4, his only appearance in which he did not earn a save, after starter Bob Owchinko gave up six runs and failed to get an out in the second inning, McCullers came in and shut down the Mets for 2 2/3 innings to steady things before San Diego came from behind to win 7-6 and take a 3 games to 1 lead in the series.

In the World Series, the Padres topped the AL Champion Boston Red Sox four games to two.
