Not sure. I'll have to check the rules page
Does it count if it is against the Padres?
Rookie Steve Rogers threw the first no-hitter in Expos history in the second game of a doubleheader at San Diego.
It is probably going to take a few seasons to turn San Diego around, but it certainly is nice to see that the Padres finally have an owner that is putting some real effort into improving that team.
The San Diego Padres are in first place!
Opening Day will be simmed at around 8pm PST.
NOTICE - The Padres have made a 7-player trade with the Dodgers despite the new Padres owner still being in the 10-day period before he is permitted to trade. The owners ran this trade by me before completing it and I gave them permission to go ahead with it since it seems to be a fair deal and, in particular, it is positive for San Diego's future.
REMINDER - The deadline for cutting rosters back to 30 players is 2pm PST. The Braves, Cubs, Dodgers and Phillies are still over the limit.
REMINDER - From the Rules page: "New owners may not trade until they have run their team for 10 days."
You get the only team available, the soon to be improving San Diego Padres.
I'ts been a few years last time I was on pennantchase.
What team do I get?
Ah yes...another famous stoneglove
I could use his offense, but I've already got all bat/no glove Staub at DH.
He's trying ...once a stone glove, always a stone glove? Dude LOVES to DH though!
Tell Mr. May to work on his defense if he wants to move to Montreal.
Hopefully. Haven't looked that far out. Deal with it when it comes...maybe will need to make a trade. Lee May is available!!!๐
Fergie Jenkins won 32 games this season. That is what got me to thinking about 5-man rotations. The rules as written when this league began with the 1969 season say we will go to 5-man rotations in 1974 and the league poll results show that most owners prefer that, so that is what we will do. I hope you have 5 starters for 1974.
Reds will have 4 starters in 73...maybe 5 depending on how 1 rookie imports
It might be for me....or I might have exactly 5. Might have to count again. Lots of Reds pitchers started in other orgs
The Padres are available again, if anybody is looking for a challenge.
Is that really a problem for some teams?
Or if they will even HAVE a fifth starter lol
Based on the poll results so far, I'd say not many owners have much confidence in their 5th starters.
I guess we ought to put the question in league poll. Please check in out down and to the right.
I just realized it says this on the Rules page: ๐ฅ Starting Pitchers: This league uses 4-man rotations until 1973. In 1974 the league will begin to use a 5 man rotation.
1973 seems like the right season to change from 4-man starting rotations to 5. If no one objects, we will go to 5-man rotations from next season.
The Chicago Cubs are available in my NL 1922 league. You can join via the Join Leagues/Custom Leagues page.
Does it count if it is against the Padres? Regardless, I have added it to the History page.
Day 119 Doug Rau Pitched Perfect Game.
REMINDER - The trade deadline is Day 120.
Finns are famous for their thoughtfulness and respect for the aged.
Dodgers sign Maury Wills to Finnish his last season with them.
Glad to have you with us.
Thanks for the intro
Nobody wanted LA, so now we are stuck with some Dodgers fan that just grabbed them.
Nobody wanted LA, so now we are stuck with some Dodgers fan that just grabbed them.
The 1972 season starts in about 4 hours. I warned you the Padres had some weaknesses, but I think they have their best roster ever this year. Good luck!
Dear Lord in Heaven, I just finished reviewing the Padres. Has anyone been playing this team? I will do my best to right the ship but bailing water will be the first order of business. Where are we in the off season?
Also a good thing the National League has decided to use a DH!
He's taking groundballs everyday.
@Dodger1973 Are you getting many offers for Lee "Bad Attitude" May? His defense sucks.
All teams have made necessary cuts to comply with roster limits. Opening day will be simmed at around 10 pm (PST) Thursday.
The Dodgers are available if anybody wants them.
A GM has to do whatever he can to improve bargaining position.
ratchan....you just want him for cheap ๐
Be aware, Lee is known to have a very bad attitude.
Lee May is available. Make me an offer. Looking for IF and pitching.
Good series
Game 7 coming up!
Vince55 has not been online in two weeks, so I have removed him as owner of the Padres. If anybody wants them, let me know. Also, if anyone knows someone that might want them, please send an invitation.
That certainly is what they say if they do not want to lower a player's trade value. No one said you were stupid.
Course thats what they ALL say.....right?
I assure you ratchan...just a rumor lol.
Thanks guys wish everyone happy Easter, I was waiting till end of the season but I have to move on
The rumor out of Cincinnati is of fisticuffs in the clubhouse followed by a trade request after you criticized May for failing to run hard to first on a popup.
He's a quality player...and I think if you could look in a crystal ball you would find he's probably got some good baseball left in him. Of course, nobody can tell the future....(or can they???)
Lol. He's a perfectly fine gentleman. Unfortunately his skills will no longer be needed on my squad so he's asked for an opportunity elsewhere and I'm willing to grant it if I can find the right trade partner.
Do you have another player you prefer at 1B in 1972, or are you simply sick and tired of May's bad attitude? Anyone considering a trade for him has a right to know, I am sure you agree.
Reds 1B Lee May will be made available for trade this coming offseason.
REMINDER - The trade deadline is Day 120.
It's worse than that if you look at San Diego's start.
Wow, three straight 2-1 games to start the season!
Check out the Giants record vs. the Padres.
Phillies now 5-0 in 1-run games vs. Pirates... that's gotta be some sort of record!
After starting the season with an incredible 6 consecutive 1-run losses, the Padres changed course dropping a 5-0 stinker in San Francisco.
I think I agree with you, but I would be willing to go to every 3 hours if enough owners want it that way.
Sims every 4 hrs is ok for me.
San Diego has started the season 0-4. This is no surprise. The odd thing, though, is all four games have had the same score, 2-1.
We are currently simming every four hours. Would everyone like to change that to every three hours instead?
I have mixed feelings about that. What speed would people like?
Thought we were going faster sims?
Mets got 4 catchers, tuff position if you need one let me kno
1971 Reds have a lot of OF and are looking for IF depth or pitching. Message me if interested.
Thanks everyone!
Thanks everyone, going to take the summer off
Congratulations Reds! Nice series
14-0 means less when you lose game 2 and 3.
Nice little race going for 1st place
And before you whine about injuries, do note that the team ahead of you in the East standings has been without its best player for almost two months.
Well, when nutrition was a six pack of Schlitz and physical fitness was mostly beaver-shooting, there were bound to be some injuries.
Boom pull with in 3 points from first , 2 players go down on IR back to back, that puts 3 players out! 1970 must of been a tuff year to stay healthy
REMINDER - The trade deadline is Day 120.
Opinions are exactly what I am looking for. Thank you.
Itโs your call , Iโll play no matter what , just offered an opinion
Yes, but it also moves your Mets closer to the late 70s and early 80s period a lot faster, too.
If you go faster , which might be better , you end the season sooner, then it gives other teams a chance to start over , build their team
Half the league has voted for faster sims and most of the rest have no opinion, so I guess we ought to speed 'em up. We are currently simming every 4 hours. We can go to 2 or 3 hours between sims. Would anyone care to express a preference for one or the other here in this chat box?
Redshawk is gone. He quit weeks ago. Nice gesture, though.
RedHawks-I donโt get around to checking the chat very often, so I apologize for this delayed response. Congrats on the new screen, and welcome back!
NOTICE: Two teams have moved to new stadiums this week. The Pirates will play their first game at the new Three Rivers Stadium against the Expos on Day 77. The Reds will break in their new Riverfront Stadium the same day with a doubleheader against the Dodgers.
Rough.
When you have players go down, they go down for a long time. Second player out for 67 days not 4 or 5 but over 65 days
Need a big bat (catcher) offering a SP
Send out some offers.
Letโs trade, time to trade shake it up
I am embarrassed to tell you that I screwed up and ran waivers prematurely. I hope this does not affect anyone's plans.
Just joined. Can I have the Reds please?
Padres owner qqaatt04 has moved to the Cardinals. Cincinnati and San Diego need new owners. Please invite friends.
The Braves, with the help of a current 11-game win streak, have won the West.
NOTICE - There are no games scheduled for Day 172, so I have manually granted all teams a day off.
Letโs go into the playoffs and put my 2 best players both outfielders on IR, thatโs wrong
My wife surprised me for my 70th birthday with a gigantic wall video monitor the size of TX! I learned to use accessibility options for a humongous on-screen keyboard that I can see even with my worsening focus and vision problems! She kept hearing my laments about having to leave PC family because of my limitations and she came up with a wonderful workaround. I am back for as long as I can see well enough, and this monitor may allow that for a long time (I pray). I apologize for bringing health concerns as this is a baseball sim, not a doctor's/MD site... but I wanted to share my JOY at having PC back in view to enjoy the greatest sport ever. Baseball. I will even be able to see the REDS play on this monstrosity of a screen. GOD is good and thanks for indulging me. I will limit my number of teams in the future as my eye issues prevent me from spending the hours I did before, staring at a monitor. I have to rest more. Thanks for the time guys and I will check in from time to time as I get the hang of the new setup. (P.S. My wife helped me on this one so spelling was better!)
The Mets have won the East.
Prayers for you ๐
That is some sad news.
Thanks ratchan!
I have some health issues that affect my ability to focus properly. I am getting tests as I also have macular degeneration (vision problems-blindness & tunneling). I am reluctantly taking a hiatus from my wonderful hobby of baseball sims until I can function in a way that lets me focus on the task at hand. If you are a person of faith, prayers are welcome. I hope to return soon. I left the only pending team in Customs and will let my seasons play out as I have them set up. Thanks to Mr. Bacci for your great application and your dedication. My wife helped me type this as I cannot focus well even with a giant keyboard. Even though I cannot play (hopefully temporarily) I will still donate faithfully to help this platform prosper. All the best to everyone who plays Pennant Chase. It is addictive for sure!
Ouch. His season is over.
Best player out 40 days, come on
Impressive. I'd like to see that. Please post a video on Instagram. You'll be sure to become an "influencer" or whatever.
I handstand to the can. :)
Right you are.
Your Reds collapse in this league has been truly epic. I am quite impressed. PC has a way of humbling the cockiest of owners (not too suggest you are cocky). One minute your team is winning and you are feeling pretty good about things and the next everything is headed downhill and you cannot do anything to stop it. A bit like real baseball over the course of a long season.
With your hip condition, even if you can find the bathroom there is no guarantee you'll be able to reach it.
My math is still shaky but no matter who counts. I stink but will enroll in manager school. I should know my way around after playing 50 thousand+ games on PC. But I am lucky to find the bathroom these days. ha!
I stand and sit corrected I was 60-45 after 105. 7-22 since. I rode the short bus to math class one day a week and the teacher did not show up. I still stink.
I cannot believe I was actually 60-37 and in first place once. 7-33 since. That is crazy. I stink.
I joined since I was born in 1915. Thanks.
My new league, N.L. (1915), is now public, so, if you want to join you can do so via the Join Leagues/Custom Leagues page. @Redshawk - The Cincinnati Reds of your youth are still available.
Reds have lost 30 of 37 so I am certain my pitchers are drinking beer in the Bullpen!
Miracle Mets!
Here comes the Mets
The Padres look pretty safe, but your tailspin has been awfully impressive. My Expos have also dropped from 2nd to 5th, but with my pitching that was to be expected.
7-27 since game 106. 1st to 5th place spiral. San Diego watch out, I am coming for your spot. :)
NOTICE - There are no games scheduled for Day 137, so I have manually granted all teams a day off.
Thank you for that nomination. I honestly do not know how we are doing it.
ratchan should be Manager of the year. You already have 9 more wins than Expos had in 1969 and we still have about 40 games to play.
You are funny. :) Everyone needs pain meds after reading my diatribes.
Your latest post here in The National League chat box makes me wonder what kind of pain medication they've got you on following your recent surgery.
OK. I saw them play. You can be tough and still lose. That ballpark (Jarry Park) was like playing in a parking lot! I am 4-16 over last 20 and I am tough as nails! You seem to be doing OK with that Expos 1969 roster. It was a crazy year as division play started. Playoffs were expanded...pitching mound specs were altered... and the expansion teams raided all the other MLB clubsa. No coddled and overpaid strikeout artists like those that litter the MLB landscape today. Most pitchers today can barely make it through 6 innings and collect millions. Give me the 1969 Expos or Reds over any of the pampered crybabies playing today. This view does not reflect the opinion of the staff and management at this radio station. Oops. I fell back into my radio announcing disclaimers. I worked behind the microphone too long! ha!t
52-110 is not my idea of "tough". I guess you and I have different standards.
Those Expos were tough in their first year. Bill Stoneman was great and the Padres had Clay Kirby. I wish I had them both. But I will get you next game Commish!
Re: The Reds' freefall - Whaddya expect when you're playing the Mighty Montreal Expos?
That was a long one! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Re: Bauer - He had a nice season in Yokohama. Re: the 2020 season - We will not be playing that one in this league.
Again I digress as this is the 1969 Reds. OK I am done ranting. :)
You can't even use Bauer as a starter from that year unless you change his role and then his pitch count is only 40. The Reds have never been known for great pitching. Then there is Hunter Greene. We shall see. I think he will blow his arm out.
14-20 in one run games for the season ain't a great harbinger for the Reds future this season. But I digress...as usual! I can still win the division but it won't be because of my pitching. The REDS have had ONE Cy Young winner in their LONG history starting in the 1880s. And that honor went to TREVOR Bauer(omg) for the pandemic season in 2020.
BTW Commish. We are 3-14 in the last 17. Call me Tom Petty because I am 'Free Falling'. :)
I am glad trading is now OFF as the sole trade I managed turned out really bad as the RP went on 46 day IL not long after I pulled the trigger. I am the Charley Finley of The National League*1969*
IF my hips allow it!
Not for long Commish. We are in freefall and heading for the basement. I will get better as we progress thru the years. I am having fun and just being tongue in cheek for my own amusement. All the best to all teams and players. Just having some fun and looking forward to Spring training. I will head to AZ to see my little brother and enjoy some Cactus League games.
Dude, you're in first place.
2-12 since my hip surgery. My real hip bone brought me luck. The new one messed up my mojo. It was nothing to write home about to start with. I am fortunate to have won at all with me as GM. My team is for sale. I will pay you 10 bucks to take it. :)
The Day 120 trade deadline has passed. Trading is turned OFF until after the conclusion of the championship series.
The Day 120 trade deadline has pass d
My hips are fine. My problem is that, after a lifetime of basketball, my knees are shot.
Only a few days and you are home. This was my second one so I know the drill. Keep your real hips as long as you can. :)
You are home already? That's good.
9 game winning streak followed by an 8 game losing streak. I should have stayed in the hospital. :)
What?! (That league is about to finish its first regular season. It is rolling along nicely, but my team sucks.
I also have short term memory loss. .. Who Said That? :)
I hope your other league I opted out of is rolling along. I have too many teams to start with.
Maloney took a bigger beating with 2 days rest 2X. I will be more vigilant in watching schedule so i can adjust in time.
Hip replaced
I hope your hospital stay has not been too unpleasant.
Thank you. I will.
Quite all right and give me all the grief you want... :)
I accidentally simmed two days at once. Day 109 had only one game on the schedule, so that is that is where I got mixed up. Sorry.
I didn't take it as a complaint. Just giving some grief to a guy in first place. Regarding the doubleheader SP issue, does anyone else in here know why that happens?
It wasn't really a complaint. More like exposing a small glitch. I ain't gonna bother gbacci about it. I just thought my Commish should know. It has zilch to do with my place in standings, ratchan.
Complaints from the top of the standings tend to produce less sympathy, but I, too, have experienced some difficulties getting my preferred starters into doubleheaders. This may be an issue that should be taken up with Gbacci.
Everytime I have a doubleheader, the sim pitches a SP on only 2 days rest even when I have lineup set for 5th starter AND the schedule even lists him to pitch (Arrigo) but he never pitches. He pitched my first 2 DHeaders, but last two a SP got bombed in 2nd game because the sim pitched him on 2 days rest instead of pitching my slated 5th starter.
@RedsHawk - Yes, we do. All Stars have been selected.
These injury lengths are MLB caliber. I have put myself on the 15 day IL after hip replacement.
Wow 62 games on the IR for a starting pitcher
Do we have an all star team?
Thank you for your infinite mercy, commish! I've just given up 12 runs in four straight games - and the game before I gave up 16 runs - and that's with the good defender back - so maybe catcher isn't the problem...
good one Commish!
Maybe the two of you can share a hospital room.
What baseball Gods did I tick off? 46 day injury for a player I traded for. That is PC! I check in from hospital and get this gift. WhoopeeKyYiYay!
My new league (https://www.pennantchase.com/lgHome.aspx?lgid=47) needs just one more owner to get started. Please give it a look and join if it interests you.
REMINDER - The ALl-Star break is coming up after Day 90. Teams will be given 3 days off.
Phillies owner evilpuppy56, despite his name, is good, not evil, and he made a reasonable request. In response, after giving it some thought, I have created a catcher for the FA pool that can fill in for teams in the situation the gentleman from Philadelphia described. If your team needs an emergency catcher, you can sign Nils Zero. Please put him back when you are finished with him so that others may use his services. Also, please remember this league uses the waiver system so you will need to plan ahead. Also, if your team is at the roster limit (30 total players) you will have to risk losing a player if you wish to sign Mr. Zero temporarily.
That is a bit of an issue. The FA pool is going to grow with future seasons as players come from the AL, but for now I am not sure what we can do.
Any chance we could get some low-quality FAs? My catcher was hurt for 16 days and the backup doesn't have the stamina... we should be able to grab at least a warm body in those cases, IMHO.
Some might disagree, but I say health before PC. Take care of yourself and I hope you get better soon.
I had to quit 2 leagues and will only be here to manage this team infrequently as I have health issues to deal with. I apologize and meant no malice by withdrawing. Thanks for understanding.
Three...
Four teams remaining...
The new league still has 5 teams available. Get one while you still can.
Pirates owner parris expressed a bit of confusion about my new league. The explanation I write in reply might be of interest to others. "I have prepared rosters for the first season by randomly importing and distributing real players and then editing ages so that each team has one player at each age from 17 to 40. Following the season, all 40-year-olds will be retired (1 from each team) and players will progress (random) and age by one year. After that I will import new random (real) players with ages adjusted to 17 for the draft in which each team will select one player."
I don't know about the "spring" part, but it is hard to argue with the rest of your comment.
Iโma spring chicken compared to an old fart like you.
Forty?!?! Yer just a youngster. I had you all wrong.
I know some of these players from a dice baseball board game from 1973ish. Like strat-o-matic but itโs not that. Everything else is bb reference.
I need to read the chat box more often. Ratchan not-so -subtle disses make me know Iโm appreciated. And you are off by 64 years. 1969 was way before my time.
NOTICE - Trading is on. The trade deadline is after Day 120.
Fix your act or it'll soon be 10,001.
Can I get my pitchers mound moved to the outfield? It will help my staff see the ball better as it gets hit over the fence.10 thousand comedians out of work and I make jokes. :)
LEAGUE POLL - With 10 of 12 votes cast, the "...now" has won. I will make the changes in season, but, if anyone sends me a message asking me to wait, I will hold off for their team until after the season finishes. So anyone that does not want park effects changed during this season should contact me as soon as possible.
To be clear, I am not disagreeing with you. You simply piqued my interest, so I checked it out.
I checked Cloninger's PC import stats as a hitter for 1966. He was, indeed, an excellent hitter that year ... for a pitcher. If that offensive player were on your roster right now, you'd have a .675 OPS DH/PH with defensive stats so atrocious you could never use him in the field.
Tongue in cheek re: Cloninger.
I need Tony Cloninger one of my worst pitchers...to HIT! :) He hit 2 grand slams in ONE game in 1966 season and slugged 11 homers in his MLB pitching career
I know that is true! :)
You've got to understand I have been playing this game for a very, very long time and I know all the tricks.
Ever since you mentioned I had the best winning % in custom league history I have gone 4-8. Thanks Commish! You're FIRED! :)
Thank you. That seems so obvious now that you've explained it.
the B for hitters in bracket means Bench in slumpbuster
For pitchers eligible for slump buster the brackets indicate his spot in rotation (1-5 for SP) or for RP his spot order in your bullpen
The brackets let you know where the player bats in the lineup vs L or R in Slumpbuster.
As commissioner, I am supposed to know everything, but I have been away from PC for a while and there is one new feature I do not understand. Can someone explain what the numbers and letters in brackets before player names on the slump buster page mean (ex. [VR: 7,VL: B] for hitters or [R: 3] for pitchers)?
In honor of Bob Uecker, perhaps Pat Corralles will step up and make everyone in Cincinnati forget about Johnny Bench.
Let the losing begin as Johnny Bench and Alex Johnson are out for a week. That's baseball!
You are right, sir!
I'm older than dirt and I am younger than you. It's all about how you feel, right?
RoyalsBlues must be older than dirt.
My first MLB game was 1965 when we lived in Detroit and my Dad took me and my brothers to Briggs Stadium in Detroit to see the Orioles vs Tigers. Lolich vs. McNally. Grew up Tigers fan and moved to KY in 1966 into Reds market. My Aunt packed a lunchbasket and would take me on a drive to Cincy to see Reds in Sunday doubleheaders.
Regarding your long and thoughtful comment about choosing this league as your first custom, I appreciate your words and think you have picked a good one for starting out. This is a rather simple league and anyone that has been in one of my leagues before can tell you I run things smoothly and without any nonsense. I'd also like to say that I am pleased we have one member that actually remembers the real 1969 season. That does not mean you are the oldest owner in this league. That would be Royalsblues. He is 104, so he must have watched games back in 1969 by his brain has turned to oatmeal and he cannot remember anything from that year or any other at this point.
The DH does not need rest. When a player does need rest, you can put him at DH for one game and that will count as a day of rest.
Does the sim adjust when a player needs rest say... every five days but he is exclusively the DH? DH's don't typically need a lot of rest and I have a guy (Corrales) who is DH only at this point but is supposed to sit every 6th day.
I looked at Custom leagues for years but did not have time because of work to take the time needed to be a commish or a manager. I retired this year and have more time so I am giving it a shot. It is nice to start so well but PC fame is fleeting like a fart in a whirlwind. :)
It is because this is my first team and I started out good. 1969 was a tough year for pitchers as the top brass changed the mound after Bob Gibson and Denny McLain monster era seasons and 300 hitters no where. Offenses soared and pitchers sucked because 1969 also saw expansion where every team had to give the incoming teams (Padres/Expos) players to further dilute the talent. There w..
