George Springer -1.1 DWAR May 31st.
George Springer -1.1 DWAR May 31st.
As per Baseball reference, George Springer is currently -1.1 DWAR. And we are only May 31st,,, Meaning he is on pace for -3.2 DWAR over the season !
Clearly something is wrong about BREF advanced stats nerds DWAR calculations sometimes.
He has been DH for 15 games so far this season. I think , this is where all this miscalculation comes from !
Especially since for 15 games he never was a defensive factor... it would then be even worst if he was playing the field...
This just doesn't work. Only at eye sight, we all know Springer is not all that bad defensively. Especially since he is a 1.000% Fielding right now...
Springer is absolutely not a defensive liabilty playing RF or LF. This is so awkward and misleading.

Re: George Springer -1.1 DWAR May 31st.
Maybe his bad defense is why he DH a lot?
Springer’s range factor (remember that PC?) is considered low. Zero errors is nice but apparently he doesn’t get to balls others do. Could be all the injuries sapped his range. Seems like the Jays agree and that’s why he DH so often. Not going to argue baseball references formula since it’s a made up stat of theirs, but I think we’ve seen it make sense for the most part.
Glad youre still here, thought you got frustrated a while back and considered leaving.

Re: Re: George Springer -1.1 DWAR May 3
Same baseball reference that said JT Snow is 10x times a worst defender than Mo Vaughn in 1995 and in most of the 90's season !
Springer DH's a lot, so he can stay healthy...and some youngster can Dfend also...and yeha maybe better than he does.
But Jays are not scared at playing him in the OF for sure...
My taughts is playing so much DH, affects his defense positional metrics calculations...
DWAR Formula is a good tool, but I feel there is some flaws to it.
This Dwar Springer has right now, could be one of the worst ever. And he is not even close to be that bad...
For the rest, Nah ,Still hanging in here, but not as invested...

Re: George Springer -1.1 DWAR May 3
I think another example is Bryce Harper 2018 he is a - 3.2 DWar OF - with a .990 Fielding Percentage,
He was not slow back then and while he wasn't a stellar defender, that DWar is almost punitive, he has about a 12-13 percent chance of turning an out hit to him into a hit, that's really bad

Re: Re: George Springer -1.1 DWAR May 3
Harper was terrible defensively in 2018 based on watching most of those games. He would always let it hop in front of him for a single unless it was hit right to him. He would also lolly-gag out of the batter's box, which was the root of his altercation with Paplebon. A lot of other times, he'd just sort of stand there and raise his arm as the ball sailed over his head for a "double."
Re: George Springer -1.1 DWAR May 3
The one I can't understand is Ichiro , how does he not have a plus arm for any season ? One of the best arms ever imho right up there with Roberto .
Re: George Springer -1.1 DWAR May 31st.
Plus arm on pennant chase is not determined by strong arm (Guy would have to manually do that), it’s determined by assists. No one ran on Ichiro, less assists. It’s why all the OF who also played infield have plus arms. So yeah, that’s always been an unrealistic part of PC.
Re: Re: George Springer -1.1 DWAR May 3
Speaking of Ichi , I forgot that the Cobra Dave Parker was also elected to the hof and most remember the throw at the all star game at the kingdome . Whats funny about perception is I went and looked at his fielding stats , he always had a fld pct around .960-.970 yet he had the rep as a great fielder. You have to remember though , there was no youtube or bbref to instantly look up stats , you had to go to the library ! and check the Baseball Encyclopedia out and most times you were 7th or 8 th on the waiting list lol. Those were the days !! Not saying he doesn't belong , just that things aren't always the way you remember they were.
Re: George Springer -1.1 DWAR May 3
Another guy with a ridiculous arm was Dwight Evans, nobody ran on him, just like Ichiro - although I will say Ichiro made a throw one time from right field to nail a guy at the plate without a cut-off that was ridiculous- it was an absolute Laser.
Re: Re: George Springer -1.1 DWAR May 3
Agreed on the plus arm being an issue...would be really cool to incorporate statcast era (2015-present) throwing numbers from the outfield to help determine it...the tech is getting pretty good now can probably retroactively use it to figure out Cobra and Ichiro some day soon too!
