In 30 years of following baseball, the strangest play/rule interpretation I have ever seen happened in the Blue Jay/Redsox game tonight. Full disclosure, I am a Jays fan so I am extremely shocked right now. The Sox scored a run without actually scoring a run. Please help me understand what just happened. This does not feel like it was in the spirit of the game.

I didn't like it either, but at least they still won! The only thing that makes sense to me is that the Jays never challenged the play at 3rd base by throwing to third to retire the runner. That runner is never out on a sac fly until the defensive team throws it to 3rd, the 3rd baseman steps on the bag, and the umpire signals that he's out. Even though it doesn't make much sense that he just ran home without even trying to tag up, I guess you still have to throw it over to third and step on the bag or ... he's safe??
For those who didn't see the play, the weird part that complicated things was that the Jays did record the second and third outs on the play. The fly ball out was out number two, and then they threw to first base to double off a runner who left early from first, so that was out number three. BUT, the runner on third just ran home, and the Jays didn't think they needed to throw it to third to record a "fourth out"??? That would be weird right? Plus the umpires waved the Jays off the field so they were in the dugout when the discussion started. If they'd stayed on the field, I suppose they could have thrown it over to 3rd to record a 4th out, just to legally make that runner out so his run wouldn't count. Such a bizarre play.

i am a Red Sox fan and don't understand how the run counted. Neither runner tagged as everyone thought that there were 2 outs! but the inning should be over when either runner was doubled up. just a bad rule. inexcusable at the mlb level not to have any idea how many outs there were.

It was considered a time play, the runner crossed the plate before the 3rd out was recorded at first. Had Bateman thrown to third instead of first, that would have been the third out, and the run would not have counted. It didn't help that the scoreboard showed two outs when the play started, and a few of the Toronto players walked out of fair territory before the play was over.

Artshinski has it right in a succinct manner. The runner crossed the plate before the 3rd out. After the out at first is recorded the inning is over. It would not have mattered if the Jays then threw the ball to 3rd for a 4th out. The inning was over. They could not even challenge if he left early. Weird play yes. The only way out would have been to throw to third instead of first.
If the runner on first got back safely, then they could appeal at third because there would have been 2 only outs. So the OF had to go against his intuition by throwing to first in this case. Crazy stuff.

I think it seems weird because intuitively it feels like throwing to first to get the runner out who didn't tag up should be a force out, but the rules don't consider it a force. Instead it's a timing play and the run counts because he scored first.
It was a real missed opportunity for the Jays to appeal at third base get a fourth out, which is a cool and rarely seen play!

Makes sense but can someone explain the little league situation where a team that used an ineligible player gets to come back and a team that won is eliminated ?
