Dodgers ruining baseball - again !!

Dodgers ruining baseball - again !!

Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - again !!

are you kidding? first of all, the dodgers world series last year was the most thrilling i ever witnessed in 53 years. secondly, why does it matter if they want to grossly overpay for a player? i mean seriously have you seen kyle tuckers stats from last year? not all too much to get excited about, definitely an upgrade, but definitely way overpaid. besides, the blue jays showed other teams can compete and were a will smith's toe away from winning the world series last year.

Re: Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

Just one more reason to add to many of why I root for them to lose every time they play.

Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - again !!

It is not the Dodgers fault per se, but it is demonstrating how far baseball is out of whack compared to the other sports. The Dodgers top three player salaries for 2026 would currently be the 15th highest team payroll. That is a major problem, among other issues long term for the sport. As a result, I am already planning on the 2027 to start late, if at all.
Baseball is the only major sport where TV revenue is not shared and that is a big reason why the Dodgers can afford a 400+ million payroll and teams like the Guardians, Pirates, etc. are below 100 million. I hope they institute a salary floor of at least 150 million so they smaller market owners have to spend money because the Guardians payroll is currently lower than it was in 2001 when the current owner purchased the team.
I also think if the stars made a little less and younger players made a little more, it would be better for the sport. I am all for capitalism, but the players union has too much power and they are not making decisions for the betterment of the sport.

Re: Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

Yep - this is what the players want and it's the system MLB has. You can't blame the Dodgers. The funny part is that it only helps the top players; not the bottom or middle rung guys. Was Tucker worth this much? Doesn't matter, it's what he got. Can the Dodgers afford it ? The Dodgers are printing money; they have a great TV contract, they sell Dodger Stadium out every night and they make a ton off merch and licensing. And guess what, when you make the playoffs and win the WS, you get more money !! Don't tell Pittsburg, or they might start wanting to win too !!

Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

I'm not worried at all, because while the Dodgers were busy with their guys, my Twins were signing old Josh Bell and weak-hitting utility infielder Vidal Brujan and also just signed like the 34th best international teenager, so the future is looking ... ... ... oh, forget it. :(

Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

same as when Bonds, Sosa, Clemens, Rodriguez any many others abused steroids - they weren't against the rules, YET - however once the rules were changed, those gaming the system have rightfully carried a stigma - so now the Dodgers may be remembered not as a great team, but the best team $$ can buy, and morally questionable,- that being said this will all get fixed after the lock out- the party is coming to an end

Re: Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

I don't understand the player's union - it would only benefit them to have a "Floor" and if it comes with a cap, who cares? It could be a high, hard cap and by forcing other teams to spend, players will still get paid. The ludicrous deals will probably go away, but that's only a small percent of players. The Agents will be the most upset - but guess what, they don't get to make the rules. Leaches like Boros can go suck it if they don't like it. That being said, the players won't agree to a cap anyway, even if it's the best thing for them.

Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

My Mt Rushmore of my 4 most hated sports franchises. Again this one is mine,
Dodgers, Cowboys, Lakers, and Canadiens. Not all Canadiens. Just the Montreal ones.

Re: Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

In their latest move, the Dodgers are attempting to acquire Greenland...

Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

I figured the next headline would be that the Dodgers have bought the 2017 World Series Championship from the Houston Astros for deferred money of course.

Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

"The players won't agree to a cap anyway, even if it's the best thing for them"

Of course they won't. Their agents are probably the ones TELLING them to avoid a salary cap at all costs

Re: Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

If the MLB is able to institute a Cap (doubtful) you can thank the Dodgers.

Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

Besides a cap it would be great if there was a way to institute a minimum floor. I know there is a minimum salary for rookies and the like so it's a defacto floor, but a real one that can be audited as a competition clause. Dream on, I know.

Re: Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

The Dolans (Guardians owners) are fantastic people who don't meddle with the team and let the baseball people do their jobs. However, if you own a baseball team in modern times and cannot afford at least a 150 million payroll, then you need to sell the team to someone who can. Nobody is expecting the Guardians, Pirates, Royals, etc. to have 300 million dollar payrolls. 150 should be the minimum though.

Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

@jimgriddy - that's the dialogue now from the Commissioners office, a Floor Cap and a Ceiling Cap. And I agree that if you can't afford a 150 mil budget, you should sell. There isn't a franchise in baseball that doesn't appreciate in value every season. The Guardians, Pirates, Reds, etc. are all worth a ton of money. If those owners are holding on to the teams, they must be making money and they should stop crying poor.

Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

Yanks already ruined it

Re: Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

Paul Dolan bought the Guardians for 333 million; they are now worth 1.48 billion. Paul Dolan's net worth: 5.5 billion.
Bob Nutting bought the Pirates for 92 million; they are now worth 1.32 billion. Bob Nutting's net worth: 1.1 billion.
John Fisher bought the A's for 180 million; they are now worth 2 billion. John Fisher's net worth: 3 billion.

Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

I my opinion, you're a sucker if you buy tickets to go watch ANY professional sporting event live-let the corporate types and the morons that don't know any better buy the tickets- and I'll watch the games on TV and play fantasy sports sims with their real life statistics instead. Who wants to shell out a tom of bucks to drive and park for a game just to wait in line for overpriced food & drink and then wait in another line to relieve yourself of the overpriced food & drink. If I want to watch a baseball game I'd rather go to my local Softball Park and watch the weekend warriors play for the love of the game and the camaraderie that comes along with it.

It's sad because now money isn't just ruining professional sports, now it's ruining the College games as well. Next thing you know the kids playing in Pee-Wee leagues will want to get NIL money for playing too!

Re: Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

Who wants to? I do. lol. I will still go to the ballpark when I can. Not as often, but it is still a great time out. I know what to expect. it's like going to Disney or the movies and complain about the prices. you know what it is before you go. If you want to do it, do it and enjoy it.
It's not like cable or streaming are a great value. I do that too from my chair.

Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

i used to enjoy going up to tampa when the red sox were in town, but they made a few changes by charging 2x normal parking fees, increasing ticket prices for premium games and going cashless. we used to go 2-3 times each year but prices skyrocketed. tampa is still cheaper than most but kind of turned me off by blatantly gouging other teams fans. i still enjoy spring training in fort myers but pricing is getting steep for exhibition baseball!! or maybe i am just cheap!!

Re: Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

I enjoy MLB in the stadium as opposed to on the couch. Little better atmosphere. Its a 3 1/2 hour drive to the closest stadium so we only do it a few times a season. SF is the best place to watch a game. We are lucky. Anaheim stadium is the worst but Disneyland is close. NFL on the other hand I prefer on the couch. I hate TV timeouts. Probably stems from being a HS football coach for 40 years. No TV timeouts there.

Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

I am just south of St. Pete. About 1/2 hour from Tropicana. I go see the Royals twice when they come in. One game we splurge for really good seats. About $60 bucks each. We also buy 2 pack of 5 tickets for $75. So we pay $150 to go to those 5 games of our choice. You sit down the lines in the last 3 sections before the foul pole field level. Great deal. Parking is added on at $20 a pop but it is still overall a good value.
Been to Fenway, Shea and Citi, Yankee stadium, Miami, Anaheim and Dodger stadium. Also saw the Royals in Surprise AZ one year. Hoping for a road trip to KC this year or next.

Re: Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

I live thousands of miles away from any MLB city but we have an Independent league team in town which is pretty good baseball and a very good stadium and atmosphere. Love going to games and it’s very reasonably priced. Go Goldeyes! That plus Pennant Chase plus my Minnesota Twins - baseball been berry berry good to me. 😁

Re: Dodgers ruining baseball - agai

Baseball is a game that was made for the radio. Being a lifelong Cincinnatian I should know because WLW, the home of the most powerful radio tower in the country, made the Reds the franchise they were before TV took over as the dominant entertainment medium. I would go to more games if decent tickets were around $30, beer cost $5.00 and parking cost $10 but everythng costs twice of what I think is reasonable to watch a baseball game. I will go to a college basketball, college football or even high school basketball / football games before I would go to a ballpark and drop $200 to take my wife and I to a MLB baseball game.

The best sporting events I have ever been to was going to the A-10 Basketball tournament when it was in town. We purchased tickets for all the tournament sessions and I never enjoyed a sporting event as much as I enjoyed that. When I retire I want to see a few more of those.
