Cleveland Rename

Cleveland Rename

What do you guys think about Cleveland renaming their team? I hope it doesn't get renamed to "Cleveland Baseball Team"....

Re: Cleveland Rename

They’ve decided not to ever be the “Tribe” or “Baseball Team” so no need to worry. I think a solid idea could be the “Spiders” but I’m not sure. Very good topic to debate!

Re: Cleveland Rename

i think it's silly because they were named in honor of american indian lou sockalexis. the logo however definately needs to go. this cancel culture has gone too far. remember papa john , they said he was racist for saying players should stand for the anthem.

Re: Re: Cleveland Rename

better get those worms before they get away.......

Re: Cleveland Rename

Change their team colors to orange and black and name themselves the

Cleveland Eerie

Elvira could be the mascot. Now that was something staying up late for as a kid.

Re: Re: Cleveland Rename

Cancel culture is a joke. Political correctness ruined human's ability to have honest conversations with each other. Just like the Aunt Jemima hubbub. Her family was PROUD to have on the bottle. Welp, team woke said it had to go. How silly will we get with our "feelings"?

Re: Re: Cleveland Rename

Washington football logo and name was designed by a Native American. So there's that.
I do think the Cleveland logo has needed to go for a long time. The name change is the times we are in. If we go a little over board to try and fix some things its understandable and better than stats quo.
IMO.
Spiders was their moniker forever ago. I don't know if there any copy right stuff that she one may have bought in years past anticipating this.
Isn't Ohio known for rollercoasters? Maybe something of that ilk. It will be fun to see the rebrand.

Re: Re: Cleveland Rename

japanese league baseball has a team called the ham fighters , i think that is cruelty to animals lol

Re: Cleveland Rename

The company is actually called Nippon Ham! They're just the Fighters =)

Re: Re: Cleveland Rename

For some reason mrbubbles, I also accidentally thought it was the Ham Fighters when I set the name in a custom league known as the International League, but upon realizing my error, myself and the commish of that league agreed that it was funny enough that it would be allowed to stick. But yes htennis is correct here, the team is actually called the Fighters

Re: Cleveland Rename

Beside changing the logo I really didn't think this was necessary, but since they are going to change it, I think they should do something related to Native Americans or something like that. Maybe do something based off the name or a tradition of a local tribe? Basically they need to try and make it something that will generate interest in learning about this part of history if they are actually concerned and not just bowing down to whatever pressure they have been facing.

Re: Re: Cleveland Rename

i was making a joke. the cancel culture is going too far. just saw where a high school in san fran wants the name lincoln changed because he was racist ? really thats not what i was taught in . give in to the mob and they will just want more

Re: Cleveland Rename

The middle school is Jefferson middle that wants o change the name.

Re: Re: Cleveland Rename

different story, jefferson, lincoln, washington our countries herritage is under attack. hey just think the washington football club will have to change their name to 2000 lbs of laundry football club

Re: Cleveland Rename

it isn't racist to have a team named the Indians. racism is HATING someone because they are a certain ethnicity, not having a baseball team's name be the name of a race. no one would have a problem if the name was the "Caucasians"

Re: Re: Cleveland Rename

MrBubbles - they said Papa John was racist because he was caught on a recording complaining that he doesn’t get to use the N-word just because Colonel Sanders used to do it. The recording was made *during a diversity training.*

Re: Cleveland Rename

I knew this topic was coming, and I knew it was ripe for deletion. Keep it to possible future names of the team, please, and leave your woke or unwoke opinions off the site.

Re: Re: Cleveland Rename

No minds will be changed so I will not try to do so. But as a life long Clevelander, I will share a few facts. No matter how many times it is repeated, the team was not renamed for Louis Sockalexis. His name did not appear in any newspaper reports at the time but many racist and insulting terms about Native Americans were present in those reports. The newspaper writers who were asked to pick the new name were trying to capitalize on the popularity of the miracle worst to first Boston Braves. The story of the little girl's letter and the intent to honor him with the name change stories were revisionist and came much later. Sockalexis by accounts was talented but troubled. He endured abuse and had his personal demons. He never played for the current franchise but for the Spiders. A completely different NL franchise where the owner sent his best players to his team in St. Louis. Sockalexis was kept in Cleveland for what many consider the worst team of the time. He was released after seven games. Later journalists called his alcoholism his Indian weakness. The NL contracted the Spiders. A new AL franchise was created as the new league put teams cities abandoned by the NL. So it is also not true the Indians were once called the Spiders. Blues, Bronchos and Naps but never the Spiders. It would be like saying the Browns were once called the Panthers or Bulldogs - other defunct Cleveland football teams

Re: Cleveland Rename

So this is one of those stories like the one of abner doubleday inventing baseball when it was based on the english game called rounders. as the saying goes ,why let facts get in the way of a good story

Re: Re: Cleveland Rename

now MLB reclassifies Negro Leagues as major league
remember at least half the stats in the new major league are incomplete or not acurate

Re: Cleveland Rename

negro league stats do not count as mlb stats.

Re: Re: Cleveland Rename

they do now apparently says ESPN

Re: Cleveland Rename

Also from ESPN

Owner: Indians to keep name through '21 season
Cleveland Indians owner Paul Dolan says the team will play and be branded as the Indians for the 2021 season and that the franchise will not take an interim name, like the NFL's Washington Football Team.

Re: Re: Cleveland Rename

Wow, i wonder if that means josh gibson will become the all time homerun king. a few years back there was a travelling exibition that came to safeco field of the negro leagues. they had one of josh gibsons bats , it looked like a telephone pole. i know hank aaron played one season in indiannapolis but i dont know how many homers he had. would be great to see the hammer back where he belongs

Re: Cleveland Rename

only 5 but its been said josh had over 800

Re: Re: Cleveland Rename

up to 1000

Re: Cleveland Rename

you ever hear the story where he played and hit a ball into the sky
and the next day it came down during another game or something

Re: Re: Cleveland Rename

is he in any auto leagues?

Re: Cleveland Rename

ifferfun, thanks for the history. very informative.
You can go a little lighter on the old monikers of Cleveland baseball. There were Cleveland teams named the Blues, Spiders, etc. The may not be part of the Indians history, but they are part of the citiies history. I think that is the spirit in which those old names of Cleveland baseball teams were presented.

Re: Cleveland Rename

I am originally from Cleveland Heights. I used to be die hard defender of the Indians name and logo. However, I now understand better about how the logo/name is offensive to Native Americans.
I am all for changing the name immediately, not having one more season. I also don't want to do what Washington did and have a team without a nickname.
I am all in on the Spiders train. I think it would be a sweet logo, plus they could keep the same color scheme.
