Universal DH?

Universal DH?

Just wondering how everyone feels about the universal DH, as our dear commissioner has decided against it for the upcoming 2021 season. I, personally like the idea, but I love the old school style of baseball as well, and I think one of the best moments in baseball history is Bartolo hitting a Big Sexy Dinger. But, the DH IS really good for baseball. MLB's NLCS ratings were higher than the NBA Finals, so I think that the DH in both leagues would be beneficial, even though a lot of people might not like it.

Re: Universal DH?

I would like to see it in both leagues.

Re: Re: Universal DH?

As much as I enjoy the strategy of the National League a little better with when to pinch hit for your SP, it does not make sense to keep the DH out of the NL. The casual fan wants more offense/excitement. Baseball needs more excitement. Watching most pitchers hit offers very little excitement. Plus, with the new rule requiring relief pitchers to face 3 batters, it seems like a no-brainer to keep the DH in the NL. We definitely do not want to see relievers batting. MLB is making a big mistake.

Re: Universal DH?

Yea. Its not a done deal yet. The owners aren't going to give that to the players for free. They will want something back like expanded playoffs. Its all a bargaining game

Re: Re: Universal DH?

the DH would help the owners out more than anything. like I said, the NLCS had higher ratings than the NBA finals and I think thats because of the DH

Re: Universal DH?

When you're in a bargaining setting, every chit has value. Sometimes one party may over value the chit they have. In this instance, MLB dangles the DH chit to the Union BUT wants expanded playoffs in return.

Now in the current set-up, players don't get paid for playoffs. So that would be free BIG $ (TV rights) for the owners.

The negotiation would need to agree on a restructure for sharing playoff revenues and for the Union to determine HOW those monies would be used for the players.

It's complicated. Plus, MLB are hard liners in negotiating (more so now that they claim to have 'lost so much with no known end in sight in 2021 and maybe beyond'. I've heard this line directly from one of the team's negotiators.

Re: Re: Universal DH?

i heard of a hybrid dh rule i thought would be good. from the 1st to the 8th , the dh could bat once per time thru the lineup without that player being replaced. of course most teams would use it on the pitcher. however from the 9th inning on it would revert to nl rules. would also change the strategy of where to bat the pitcher in the lineup. but for the love of baseball scrap the man on 2nd gimmick

Re: Universal DH?

The 3 batter minimum for relievers would not require them to bat. It is 3 batters or the end of an inning. So if they pitch to 1 batter and they make the last out of an inning you can pinch hit for that reliever.

Re: Re: Universal DH?

the hybrid rule has nothing to do with rp's,its about having the option as to when to use your best hitter each time thru the lineup. most would use it for the starting pitcher but maybe in the 8th your great fielding, light hitting ss is up with the bases loaded. you could use the dh to bat and you would still get the great fielder left in the game . then from 9th on nl rules would apply. also make rosters increase to 26.but like i said in prev comment the man on 2nd in xtra innings is a gimmick, jmo
