League Rules
WELCOME TO REWRITING HISTORY (NFL)Commish: Matty Red
Vice - Voted on after inagural season
Rosters: Starting in 1986 with real team rosters. Players on multiple teams are assigned to team with whom they started the season. Max roster size - 60. All OL and defensive players are individuals and not a permanent unit as you may see in other leagues.
Progression: All players will progress by their specific progression in the offseason. All statuses are used (S, A, C, U, F). Players will be S if they are a HOF, A for multi-year pro-bowl, C is most used, F for 1 year wonder, and U for injury prone or inconsistent players. Progression will be up to 28, stable until 31 and regress after 31.
Sims: sim 1 Game per team per day. Playoffs 1 set of games per 2 days.
Injuries: Injuries are turned on but limited to 3 games per injury.
Signing players: players must have a signed contract by season end or they will become free agents. Players can be signed for up to 7 years (10 years per FA). The player contract cost will be determined by Pennant Chase, which is based on player quality and progression status. After completing their contract, they will become free agents.
Rookie Contracts: Each rookie will enter the league with a 2 year base contract. This contract will be cleared in their expiring year offseason to be signed to the (up to) 7 year PC deal. This will allow teams with smaller budget space to still draft elite players and have a window of time to clear roster cap space to meet the demand. It also allows you to sign them to their full contract closer to their prime.
Team Budgets: This will start at $300 per team. We may adjust it as the seasons go on. But the league has voted on even budgets so any adjustments will be applied to all teams.
Cuts: Players can be cut at any point during the season or offseason. Rookie contract cuts are free. Any contract signed (via PC or FA) will be subject to a 1/2 contract payout. This payout can be lumped into 1-5 seasons. So a $10/5 contract that is cut owes $25. That $25 can be paid all the same season of the cut or spread out for up to 5 years. Any spread out contracts must be within $1 per year You are not allowed to frontload or backload cuts. So $13 yr 1 and $12 year two is ok ($4 year 1 and $21 year 2 is not allowed)
Free agency: To start the league, I will import some players who played in 1985 and did not play in 1986 (due to retirement or injury) as U progressions. Following the 1986 season we will have 2 rounds of FA that will be blind bidding. Round 1 will be a $20 contract minimum. The draft will fall in between round 1 and round 2. There will be no minimum contract value for round 2.
Open free agent signing: after the free agent bidding period and shortly before the season starts, unsigned players will be available for addition to your teams for free - as a first come first serve basis. The time will be set ahead for everyone to see.
Rookie draft: Before each season (except 1986), we will have a rookie draft. This will be a slow/live draft and players will be imported using the year they first appeared in the league and their real stats will be ¨based¨ off of career stats (slightly lower to account for player progressing)
Teams and divisions: We will follow the NFL by year for team name changes, division arrangements, expansion, and playoff formats.
Playoffs: In 1986, we will have 3 division winners and 2 wild card spots for each conference make the playoffs. Ties for lead within division will defer to team with better in-division record. If still tied, then we will defer to point differential. Ties for the wild card spot will be settled by point differential. Further ties will be decided by divisional record. Playoff format will change for 1990 just as it did in the NFL.
Trading: there is no limit on the number of allowable trades. All trades must be completed before Week 12 of the season. We will establish a trade committee to oversee any questionable trades. Questionable trades could be in the form of obvious collusion, tanking, and/or any trade that drastically hurts the value of one team over another. As a reminder, OL and defensive players can be traded individually - they are not stuck together.
Trade committee members:
Anti-tanking rule: Purposely playing players out of position to succeed a higher draft pick can result in the loss of a draft pick. Put forth your most competitive roster each game and try to win regardless of how the season is going.
Some leagues use fictional player progression. To learn more about how players progress, check the Player Potential page.
