Detroit Tigers - 1987 World Series Champions
The Detroit Tigers won the 1987 World Series 4 games to 2 over the New York Mets.The Tigers were in Control of Game 1, with 8 runs on 14 hits. Steve Baker held the Mets to 2 runs on 5 hits for the win. Steve Kemp had 2 home runs in the game and Lance Parish hit a 3 run homer. Tigers 8, Mets 2.
Mike Scott led the Mets to victory in Game 2 holding the Tigers to 2 runs on 6 hits, striking out 8. Darryl Strawberry opened the scoring for the Mets with a RBI single in the 1st. The Mets then scored 6 runs in the 4th on RBI singles by Lenny Dykstra and Wally Backman and a bases clearing 3 run double by Leon Durham. The Mets cruised to a 11-2 victory.
In Game 3, John Pacella got the win for the Mets, holding the Tigers scoreless on 3 hits through 6 innings. The Mets took a 3-0 lead in the 3rd on Clint Hurdle’s 2 run homer. The Mets took a 2-1 series lead with the 4-1 victory.
Games 4, 5 and 6 were all great games each decided by 1 run. In Game 4, the Mets took the early lead in the 2nd with a solo homer by Glenn Hubbard. Alan Trammell tripled and scored in the top of the 4th to tie the game 1-1. The Mets responded in the bottom half of the 4th to take the lead 3-1 behind Hurdle’s solo homer. The Tigers answered in the top of the 5th with a solo homer by Parrish and a 2 RBI triple by Trammell to take the lead 5-3. The Mets tied the game 5-5 in the bottom of the 6th on an RBI by Backman and a RBI double by Luis Salazar. Juan Bonilla led of the top the 7th with a solo homer and the giving the Tigers a 6-5 lead they would hold for victory, tying the Series at 2-2.
In Game 5, the Tigers scored 2 in 1st on Howard Johnson’s 2 run homer and 4 in the 3rd on Kemp’s grand slam, giving the Tigers a 6-0 lead. The Mets narrowed the lead 6-3 on solo homers by Hubbard in the 4th and Alex Trevino in the 5th. Parish hit a solo homer in the 8th to extend the Tigers lead 7-3. The Mets rallied scoring 2 in the 8th and 1 in the 9th, but fell short 7-6.
Game 6 was a pitching battle between Cy Young winners Mike Scott and Dan Petry. Petry got the win for the Tigers, pitching a 2 hit, complete game shutout. Scott held it close, allowing 1 run on 6 hits. The game was scoreless through 5 and the lone run came on Orlando Mercado’s RBI single in the 6th. The 1-0 victory gave the Tigers the World Championship.
Orlando Mercado hit .391 with the series winning RBI, but the Series MVP is awarded to Lance Parrish, who hit .273 with a 1.500 OPS, 1 double, 1 triple, 4 home runs and 8 RBI.
Clint Hurdle led the Mets on offense with a .364 Avg, 1.455 OPS, 2 doubles, 3 home runs and 8 RBI.

California Angels - 1986 World Series Champions
The California Angels defeated the Houston Astros 4 games to 2 to win the 1986 World Series.The Astros cruised to victory in Game 1 with Dan Larson pitching a 2 hit complete game shutout. Jeffrey Leonard doubled and scored as the Astros jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st. The Astros scored 9 runs in the 6th with Leonard hitting a 3 run homer and Paul Serna hitting a 2 run single. Astros 13, Angels 0.
The Angels offense came alive in Games 2, 3 and 4 scoring 33 runs to take a 3-1 Series lead. The Angels built a 10-0 lead into the 8th in Game 2, as Carney Lansford opened the scoring in the 3rd with a RBI double. Leading 4-0 in the 7th, the Angels scored 4 on Rance Mulliniks’ 2 RBI double and Mike Brown’s solo homer. The Astros got on the board in the 8th but fell short. Angels 10, Astros 4.
In Game 3, the Astros scored 3 runs in the 1st on Bill Doran’s 2 run double. Down 3-1 in the 4th, the Angels tied the game on RBI singles by Thad Bosley and Lansford. In the 5th the Angels took the lead 5-3 on RBI singles by Dave Edwards and Guy Sularz. The Astros took the lead in 6-5 in the top of the 7th on Duran’s 2 run double. In the bottom of the 7th, Edwards’ hit a 2 run homer to put the Angels back on top 7-6. In the top of the 9th, Cesar Cedeno hit a solo homer to tie the game at 7 and send it to extra innings. In the bottom of the 14th, Edwards hit a 3 run homer to give the Angels the win 10-7.
The Angels jumped out to a 13-0 lead in Game 4 scoring 11 runs in the 3rd inning. Brown opened the scoring with a 2 run triple, Edwards followed with a 3 run homer and Brown closed the scoring with a 3 run homer. The Astros could not close the gap. Angels 13, Astros 3.
The Angels built a 5-1 lead in Game 5. Walling hit a RBI double in the 1st to open the scoring for the Angels. The Astros narrowed the lead to 5-4, scoring 3 in the 6th on Bruce Bochy’s 2 run homer. Serna’s 2nd homer of the game in the 7th tied the game at 5. Serna doubled and scored in the top of the 9th to give the Astros the win 6-5.
In Game 6, Paul Siebert held the Angels scoreless on 2 hits through 8. Alfredo Griffin hit a solo homer in the 5th and Doran hit a RBI single in the 7th giving the Angels a 3-0 lead. In the top of the 9th, the Angels tied the score on Brown’s 2 out, 3 run homer, sending the game to extra innings. The Angels exploded for 7 runs in the top of the 10th. Lansford hit a Grand Slam and Barry Foote hit a 2 run homer giving the Angels the World Championship with a 10-3 lead.
Mike Brown won the Series MVP with a .444 Avg, 1.630 OPS, 2 triples, 3 home runs and 12 RBI.
Paul Serna led the Astros on offense with a .421 Avg, 1.474 OPS, 1 double 2 home runs and 4 RBI.

Atlanta Braves - 1985 World Series Champion
The Atlanta Braves defeated the Texas Rangers 4 games to 3 in a hard fought series with stellar pitching.In Game 1, the Braves’ Mario Soto pitched 7 shutout innings allowing 3 hits and the Rangers’ Danny Darwin also pitched 7, allowing 1 run on 4 hits. The Braves’ bullpen gave way in the 8th. RBI doubles by Ray Howell and Rick Sweet and a 2 run single by Jerry Terrell gave the Rangers the victory 4-1.
In Game 2, the Rangers’ Tommy Boggs pitched 10 innings allowing 7 hits, and the Braves’ John Martin pitched 9 innings allowing 4 hits. Bob Horner put the Braves up in the 1st with a solo homer. Mike Anderson hit a solo homer for the Rangers in the 4th to tie the game at 1. Lee Mazzilli hit the game winning RBI single in the 10th to give the Braves the victory 2-1.
Andy Rincon went the distance for the Braves in Game 3, with a 2 hit shutout. The Braves opened the scoring on Lloyd Moseby’s RBI triple in the 2nd. In the 5th, Miller and Durham hit RBI singles and Mazzilli hit an RBI double, leading the Braves to a 7-0 victory.
In Game 4, the Braves Byron McLaughlin pitched an 8 inning shutout holding the Rangers to 4 hits. Durham and Moseby hit RBI singles in the 1st leading the Braves to a 3-0 victory.
Darwin and Soto once again battled in Game 5, this time Darwin came out on top. The game remained scoreless through 9 innings. Jim Sundberg and Wayne Tolleson hit RBI singles in the 10th to give the Rangers the win 3-0.
Game 6 was the first game to bring some offense. Pete O’Brien hit a 3 run homer in the 2nd and Sweet’s RBI double in the 3rd gave the Rangers an early 5-0 lead. Solo Homers by Horner in the 4th and Miller in the 5th narrowed the Rangers lead to 5-4. The Rangers extended the lead in the bottom of the 5th on Sweet’s 3 run homer, taking the victory 8-4 and sending the Series to Game 7.
In Game 7 the Series’ great pitching continued. The Braves’ Mike Jones allowed 1 run on 6 hits through 8 and the Rangers’ Mike Bacsik allowed 1 run on 5 hits through 6, as Game 7 went into the 8th inning tied 1-1. Bob Horner broke the tie with a RBI triple in the top of the 8th, and the Braves’ Roy Lee Jackson got the save giving the Braves the World Championship with a hard fought 2-1 victory.
The Series MVP will go to Bob Horner with a .286 Avg, 1.107 OPS, 1 double, 1 Series winning triple, 2 home runs and 3 RBI.
Rick Sweet led the Rangers on offense with a .333 Avg, 1.208 OPS, 4 doubles 1 home run and 5 RBI.

New York Mets - 1984 World Series Champions
The New York Mets defeated the Minnesota Twins 4 games to 2 to win the 1984 World Series.The Twins took the opener as Darrel Jackson held the Mets to 1 run on 3 hits. Lyman Bostok gave the Twins a 1-0 lead in the 1st with a solo homer. Mike Vail tied the game with a 4th inning solo homer. In the 5th, Bostok hit his second homer of the game, a three run shot, and Kent Hrbek added a solo homer in the 8th, giving the Twins the victory 6-1.
The Mets evened the Series in Game 2. Ricky Keeton got the victory, holding the Twins to 1 run on 3 hits. Wynegar put the Twins on ahead with a solo homer in the top of the 4th. The Mets responded in the bottom half of the 4th with RBI singles by Ron Blomberg and Pete LaCock to winning 3-1.
The Mets Nolan Ryan got the win in Game 3 allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. The Mets scored 2 in the 3rd on Glenn Hubbard’s RBI and Clint Hurdle’s solo homer. The Twins tied the game in the 7th with a 2 RBI double by Mickey Rivers. In the 9th, LaCock hit a 2 run homer to give the Mets the win 4-2.
The Mets pitching continued to control the Series in Game 4, with Dwight Gooden pitching a 6 hit shutout. Hurdle’s 4th inning RBI double put the Mets up 1-0 and Hubbard’s RBI in the 8th gave the Mets a 2-0 victory.
In Game 5 the Twins’ Darrel Jackson got his 2nd win of the Series with a 4 hit Shutout. Bostock opened the scoring in the 1st with a solo homer and hit a RBI double in the 3rd to lead the Twins to a 4-0 victory.
Game 6 was a good one. The Mets took a 4-0 lead in the 1st with 2 run homers by Hurdle and Blomberg. The Twins responded in the top of the 2nd with a 3 RBI triple by Rivers and RBI doubles by Joe Pettini and Bostock taking the lead 5-4. Pettini hit a 2 RBI double in the 5th, building the Twins lead to 8-4. The Mets narrowed the lead to 8-6 in the 6th with a 2 run homer by Blomberg and tied the game 8-8 with a 2 run homer by Hurdle. The game went into extra innings and Clint Hurdle led off the 10th with a walk off homer giving the Mets the World Championship with the 9-8 victory.
Clint Hurdle won the Series MVP, batting .292 with a 1.375 OPS, 4 Home Runs and 7 RBI.
Lyman Bostock led the Twins on offense batting .385 with a 1.385 OPS, 2 doubles 3 home runs and 7 RBI.

Texas Rangers - 1983 World Series Champions
The Texas Rangers won the 1983 World Series 4 games to 2 over the Atlanta Braves.Danny Darwin won the Series MVP with two wins, and opened the Series for the Rangers in Game 1 holding the Braves to 1 run on 5 hits. Baylor Moore pitched a complete game for the Braves, allowing 3 runs. The Rangers got their 3 runs in the 3rd with Joe Cannon’s 2 RBI single and the Rangers took the opener 3-1.
The Rangers and Braves battled hard in Game 2. With the score tied at 1 in the 5th, the Rangers took a 4-1 lead on Mike Anderson’s 3 run homer. The Braves responded in the top of the 6th with a Grand Slam by Alfredo Griffin to take a 5-4 lead. The Rangers tied it in the 7th on Anderson’s RBI double. In the top of the 9th, Bob Horner put the Braves in front 6-5 with a RBI Single. The Rangers rallied in the bottom of the 9th, Roy Howell’s two out RBI double tied it, and Bill Sample’s RBI single gave the Rangers the win 7-6.
Byron McLaughlin pitched a 3 hit shutout in Game 3 to give the Braves their first win of the Series. Mike Schmidt opened the scoring for the Braves with a 2 run homer in the 2nd and Dwight Evans hit a 3 run homer in the 6th to give the Braves a 6-0 victory.
The Braves evened the Series in Game 4. The Braves took an early 4-0 lead behind 1st inning RBIs by Schmidt and Luis Pujols, and expanded the lead to 6-1 in the 5th on a RBI triple by Sixto Lezcano. The Rangers fought back scoring in the 6th, 7th and 8th, but Roy Lee Jackson shut them down in the 9th giving the Braves a 6-5 victory.
Darwin got his second victory of the Series pitching a 2 hit shutout. Moore once again pitched a complete game for the Braves, but was again beaten by Darwin. Sample’s 5th inning 2 run homer provided the Rangers the runs they needed in a 3-0 victory.
Game 7 was another hard fought game. The Braves scored in first with a 1st inning homer by Nettles. Anderson and Howell hit back to back RBI doubles for the Rangers to take a 2-1 lead. The Braves tied it in the 2nd and took a 3-2 lead in the 5th on Griffin’s solo homer. Sundberg’s RBI single tied the game for the Rangers in the 6th. Tommy Dean’s solo homer in the 7th gave the Rangers the lead, the game and the World Championship 4-3.
Series MVP Danny Darwin won 2 games pitching 17.5 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 run, striking out 12
Bump Willis led the Rangers on offense with a .550 Avg, 1.750 OPS, 3 doubles and 1 triple.
Sixto Lezcano led the Braves on offense with a .316 Avg, 1.263 OPS, 1 double and 2 triples.
