St. Louis Cardinals Win League Championship

The mighty St. Louis Cardinals boosted by promising rookie outfielder Stan Musial appeared ready to dominate the N.L. when the season began, but injuries and surprisingly good form by the Boston Bees saw the Cards 6.5 games off the pace at mid-season. In the second half, with Musial and others escaping the infirmary at last, and despite Boston's fight-until-the-final-out determination, St. Louis managed to take first place from the Bees before clinching the pennant with a thorough shellacking of the Cubs in Chicago on the final day of the season. The title is the Cardinals' third in a row and tenth overall, leaving them just one behind the New York Giants for the most championships in league history.
