Rucy , jou got some splainin to do !!

Maybe I missed something but Shakir made the reception , his knee came down and the opposing player was all over him . How is that not down by contact ? What is this , rugby lol ?

Re: Rucy , jou got some splainin to do

and now Bo Nix is out for the season with a fractured ankle!! someone involved in the pats/texans game just caught a big break no pun intended!

Re: Re: Rucy , jou got some splainin to

Can someone answer this ? I've only been watching the NFL since 1974 but they change the rules so much it's hard to keep up .

Re: Rucy , jou got some splainin to

This is a complicated one. The rule is that if a receiver catches the ball, and in the act of catching it, is going to the ground, whether contacted by a defender or not, they must "complete the process of the catch" through the contact with the ground. Essentially, they have to maintain possession (not bobble it, not let it hit the ground unless they are still in clear control of it, not have it pop out, etc.) until they basically stop moving or otherwise make a football move (that part isn't in the rule, but that's essentially how "completing the process of the catch" is relatively easily interpreted and observed. In this case, because he was going to the ground, he had to "complete the process of the catch", which he did not do, because before he could survive the contact with the ground and "complete the process", the ball was taken away by the defender. And because the ball did not hit the ground before it was taken by the defender, it is an interception. At least, that's how I understand it.

Re: Re: Rucy , jou got some splainin to

That's the NFL's response to save the Refs... but the fact is that he did survive the contact with the ground. He did not survive the player pulling the ball away from him after he made contact with the ground and still had possession of the ball. One could also argue that the PI penalties called against the Bills on the game winning drive were no more flagrant than the same contact made by the Bronco DB's on the Bills drive in OT which were not flagged.

Re: Rucy , jou got some splainin to

Looking at it in slow motion and running the replay back and forth, the play was called correctly on the field as described by AtsanBPinetti. This is consistent with how the NFL has called catches and other interceptions.

Re: Re: Rucy , jou got some splainin to

Totally disagree, and I am not a Bills fan (Raiders, don't get me started). Watch the replay again and ask yourself, did the impact with the ground cause the ball to come loose, or did the defender strip him of the ball after the impact with the ground. IMO, he clearly survives the impact with the ground and has control of the ball when it is then stripped from him by the defender. Since he survives the impact with the ground, it qualifies as a catch.

Re: Rucy , jou got some splainin to

What I see is yes he has the ball when he "Touches" the ground. As he starts to roll he starts to lose it to the defender before he is completely on the ground. His back in this instance. He did not "survive the ground" and thus complete the catch. trust me I was rooting for the Bills so no skin in this one The defender did not pull the ball out after he came to rest on the ground from what I saw. It was a fluid process in my opinion.

Re: Rucy , jou got some splainin to do

This one is always controversial because our eyes tell us one thing, but the letter of the rule tells us another.

Re: Re: Rucy , jou got some splainin to

And the Bears game has virtually the exact same play and it is ruled the other way…

Re: Rucy , jou got some splainin to

Looking at it agin, I see catch. I also see pass interference on hat play and another. defender early twice.
