Schedule Builder NEVER Works Right

Schedule Builder NEVER Works Right

Now I've been here over four years, ran several leagues, so schedule building is something I've frequently done.

Now many times, I've created a custom league with a custom concept/ 'x' number of teams or divisions. So I'll plot those out on paper, literally. Map out all the matchups, then repeat the series of matchups where necessary. I go with a 'manually grant days off' approach, rather than build them in...

But has anyone, even Guy, ever realized that when you build a schedule with the 'automated schedule builder', it NEVER distributes out all teams with 81 Home games and 81 Away games (using 162 team games as the example of course.)

What you get is a mixed hodge-podge of half the league at 81/81 and the other half at 78/84 or 84/78 and you get to play guess and catch em all.. Has anyone ever noticed or brought to Guy's attention ? It'd be awesome to have that bug worked out. It's ALWAYS been this way.

It would also be cool to be able to toggle which divisions you want to build like (AL West vs. NL Central, as an example).

EVERY schedule I have built with the automated schedule builder does this, I can't be the only one:

Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Right

Yes, always ends up that way... the math doesn't always match up perfectly... you're talking about a fairly sophisticated algorithm to go back and correct that... definitely not impossible, but like everything it's a matter of priority. I usually just map out the games I need to swap home/away to get everyone equal and then it's easy enough to change individual games right from the schedule page. I've never had to do it enough to get annoyed by it, I guess.

I do really like the suggestion of picking distinct divisions vs divisions. I have wanted that myself. Curious what others think.

Re: Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

It would allow any custom league to perfectly map out a custom Inter/Intraleague-Inter/Intradivision schedule.. so long as the commish laid out the corresponding "scheduling blocks" correctly.

Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

Yeah, I gave up on the auto-schedule tool a while ago. Scheduling is by far the most time-consuming part of the offseason. Then again, I like to have a specific approach to my schedule. (EG. x number of games against these teams, y number against these, etc.) I plot everything out on a spreadsheet and then do the hard way of manually entering them.

One feature I would like to see with scheduling, which I hope wouldn't be nearly the programming nightmare, is to be able to repeat a block of days.

For instance, perhaps the first 30 days are all intra-division games, and then I switch to interleague play. But I want the last 30 days to be intra-division as well. It would be really handy to tell PC to repeat Days 1-30 onto Days 133-162.

Hope that makes sense.

Re: Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

I do that with custom schedules....

Plot out # of games vs. each league/division/teams

Lay out repeatable "blocks" of schedule that repeat until schedule is full.

Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

it would probably take some recoding but ive played a game called baseball mogul that had a great scedule builder. there were about 8 plus options to check. num of teams, games. interleague schedule y/n,# home away, balanced schedule. playoff options. always worked. another option would be to import a known schedule from another league with same number of teams

Re: Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

Just to be clear, you can import a schedule from another league - I wasn't sure if Mr Bubbles was saying you could do that or not.

@KDS - I'm not sure I understand the block request - are you saying because you are entering games manually, you'd like to be able to take a chunk of manually entered games and repeat them later in the schedule?

Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

yes i was saying you could, what might really help is if maybe you found some and renamed them 30 team intereague, 30 team no interleague etc. then all people have to do is match up the teams.for example raiderbills best of the best schedule seems to be a good one

Re: Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

raiderbill33 Best of the best 1947-2020

Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

That's because it's a 30-team league. You can import REAL MLB SCHEDULES if you've got 30-teams to match the franchises up to.

You don't work with commish tools, do you Bubbles ?

Re: Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

actually i do and what im saying is that if someone has a good 16 team schedule or 24 etc etc name it that and it can be imported. k.i.s.s its not that hard.

Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

as a matter of fact its a league your in with me that 70s show i have commish tool access.

Re: Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

18 team league good schedule, and your ? is...

Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

@GBacci, yes, that's what I was saying.

E.G. In one league, I have six-team divisions. The first 30 games, each team plays each divisional opponent six times, three home, three away. (5 other teams x 6 games each = 30 games). After non-divisional games, I repeat the same thirty-game block, and repeat it again to close the season.

If I could tell PC to just repeat those 30 games, it would same a lot of manual entering.

Also, to be clear, I understand that takes a lot of work on your end, so I'm not at all disappointed/angry/demanding. I just thought I'd add my two cents to a thread on building schedules.

Thanks!

Re: Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

thats what im saying , there are a lot of good schedules made but maybe people should put in parenthaces the number of teams to make it easier for those who are looking to load one for their league

Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

Thanks, lots of good ideas in this thread... I like Bubbles' idea of somehow letting people know how many teams a schedule would be for. I like the idea of being able to clone a block of games. I like Jay's idea of being able to select specific divisions.

I will have to carve out some time to look at the builder and add some features.

Re: Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

also, on the topic of the schedule builder, will the 60 game schedule from 2020 ever be imported into pc?

Re: Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

Guy,

I like the idea of picking distinct divisions vs divisions. Having that option would be helpful sometimes.

I've built many different schedules over the years. One idea I recently had was the ability to save various schedules. For instance it would be nice to save some of the schedules I've created (ex: an 8 team schedule and a 12 team schedule and a 16 team inter-league schedule and the 1910 mlb schedule, whatever I created and liked) and then be able to import it when needed much like importing a schedule from another league. Or, instead of my own repository, let the long-term proven commissioners submit unique schedules to a common location that new commissioners could import from.

I would have used such a repository (personal or site-wide), though I could see how limitations might be needed.

(That 1910 MLB schedule was a lot of work but I'd have to manually enter the whole thing again if I wanted to use it now. )

Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

LLorac, that's another really cool idea - allowing a schedule library, so to speak... I need to save all these on my TDL or I will lose them when this thread vanishes from the board.

Re: Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

i made my schedule using the automatic version for my college baseball league

Bulldogs: Home - 28, Away - 28
Tigers: Home - 28, Away - 28
Cardinal: Home - 28, Away - 28
Red Raiders: Home - 28, Away - 28
Bruins: Home - 28, Away - 28
Commordores: Home - 28, Away - 28
Cougars: Home - 28, Away - 28
Mountaineers: Home - 28, Away - 28
8 teams so...

Re: Schedule Builder NEVER Works Ri

I'm glad I opened up a dialogue to something that could really benefit commishes/users moving forward..

Several of these suggestions would be godsends.
