Strange Stat
Strange Stat
I am a lifelong Seattle Seahawk fan. They won a ring and that can never be taken away like they do in college. That being said , I looked up Phillip Rivers stats. He had 0 receptions for - 9 yrds. It happened because he got a lateral and lost yardage. It got me to thinking , who had the most yardage lifetime with 0 receptions ? I know someone else has to have a positive number . It's going to be hard to find but I really want to know .
Re: Strange Stat
That is because it counts as rushing yards as a lateral. Not receiving yards. Funny how it separates the 9 yards
Re: Re: Strange Stat
Pro football ref counts it as receiving yards if it was from a pass but its counted as rushing yards if it was a run . The all time leader is qb Frank Ryan with 31 yrds and 0 rec. Now I wonder who has the most rushing yards with 0 att all time .
Re: Re: Strange Stat
There was an example of this oddity today in the Ravens game . The Ravens intercepted a pass and the player lateraled it to his teammate who went 80 something yards for a td. He gets credited with the int yardage and the td but not the int , that goes to his teammate.
Re: Strange Stat
that seems reasonable. He didn't pick it A QB laterals backwards it is a run. Throwing a swing pass or screen that is behind the line of scrimmage but forward to the receiver is a pass.
Re: Re: Strange Stat
When Bill Parcells was head coach of the Jets, on 4th down, from like their own 45 yard line, he instructed the QB Neil O'Donnell to burn up a few seconds and then throw the ball out their own endzone, for a safety, and the Jets won by a point, I think both kickers got hurt.
anyway, a guy in my Fantasy Football league had O'Donnell he had minus 45 rushing yards and a fumble - he was pissed

Re: Strange Stat
Hall of famer Sid Luckman holds the all time NFL record for rushing futility with a career total of - 239 yards . It makes me wonder if they counted yards lost to a sack against the qb's rush total since the sack wasn't an official stat back then . This is probably a record that will never be broken .
Re: Re: Strange Stat
Sacks go against passing yards. Team passing yds not the individual QB. In college they are negative rushing yards.
Re: Strange Stat
Yes , its that way now but in the 40's it was counted differently because the sack was not an official stat. I've always wondered how many sacks someone like Deacon Jones or Gino Marchetti would have had if they were counted . Pro football ref estimates Jones had 173.5 to 175 which is pretty amazing when you figure in the fact they played a shorter schedule then .
Re: Re: Strange Stat
Deacon Jones DID play a shorter season, however, he was the subject of a rule change, he used to smack the Offensive Lineman's helmet with an open palm " RINGING HIS BELL" and allowing him to get a bunch of easy sacks, all things need to be considered when you talk about the greatest

Reminds me of the 70- 80's when players were allowed to use stickum but Lester Hayes took it to ridiculous levels . Those Steeler Raider games were one of the best rivalries ever right up there with Ali - Frazier and RedSox - Yankees . If you are a boxing fan watch Ali-Frazier 3 , the best fight of all time imho .
