Season 28 ALL-STAR GAME RECAP

Story Photo
Zach Miner of the Pathletics retired the only two men he faced in ASG28 in Minny.
ASG28 – Minneapolis, Minnesota

***NOTE - this recap contains spoilers. If you’d rather watch the replay first, you can find a link to it in the Message Centre in the blue box on the right hand side of the league home page. Happy reading!***

The BNBL stars gathered in the Twin Cities for the 28th annual All Star Classic.

AlyCat was to be our host, but she was kind of busy and didn’t actually show up. She did, however leave notes around the ballpark and in the locker-rooms for how the players and dignitaries should behave, what not to touch, what parts of the park were off-limits, and various other helpful reminders.

The Stadium (called the Haunted Cat House) was abuzz with the usual pre-game festivities and the usual weirdness. Black cats were everywhere. You could not avoid having one, or thirteen, cross your path no matter which way you turned.

There was a pre-game “guess that Minnesota Twin” contest, which the Commish won easily since he is a true fanatic. The final question was “Name the Minnesota Twin whose name was a combination of a giant and a giant-killer.” Post your own guess in the chat box.

Ten Prince impersonators took turns singing the national anthem (3 of whom were actually decent), and famous Vixen/AlyCat alums Jamie Quirk and Ron Kittle threw out the first pitch(es).

The game itself was enjoyable for the home team fans. In the bottom of the first, after NEA starter walked the first two men he faced, Vixen 1st baseman Steve Bilko singled in a run to get the South Pacific squad on the board. After a Mike Laga strikeout, Vancouver’s Gregg Zaun smashed a 3-run homer to put the home team up 4-0.

Apart from the first inning fireworks, it was the SP pitching staff who stole the show. In 9 innings, they combined for 7 strikeouts and gave up only 2 hits, both by Peace Frog Brian Daubach. Individual stars included Harry Harper (Pilots) and Ricky Nolasco (Silver Sox) who both recorded 3-up, 3-down innings.
In the 6th, Zaun doubled to lead off the bottom half of the inning and scored on a Garrett Jones’ double to make the score 5-0 South Pacific. That’s how the game ended, with Dennis Tankersley (of all people) getting the final out of the game.

With the victory, the SouthPacificers won their third straight All-Star game, tying the all-time series, with each side winning 14 games.

The ASG MVP was Gregg Zaun of the Vancouver Canadians for the second straight year. Zaun went 3 for 3 with a single, an RBI double, a walk, and a first-inning 3-run home run which gave the home team an early 4-0 lead. Great game Gregg with 3 Gs!

Next season, ASG29 will be hosted by Dommod in Mudville.
Thanks for reading the recap! And have a great 2nd Half!
Gus

After Season 20 in the BNBL, we held our first Hall of Fame vote, and the first group of players was added to the BNBL Hall of Fame. We've since had ballots after Seasons 21 through 27, and there will be another HOF ballot after every future season. Eligibility requirements - player must be retired. That's it. Oh, and they must also be less bad than many other BNBL players. (New players will be added to the ballot each season. If you think I've missed someone worthy of the honour, let me know, and he may be added to future ballots). To gain entry to the Hall, a player must receive a vote from at least 50% of the voters or finish in the top two (plus ties) among vote-getters on the ballot.

Welcome to the BNBL (Bad News Bears League)

Story Photo
Even if your name is Gross, you can still play (and star!) in the Bad News Bears League
The BNBL is the league for mediocre players to play against their peers.
See how these "Average Joes" might have fared if they didn't have to face Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax, Lou Gehrig, or Babe Ruth.

Hitters have to have:
less than 1.000 combined AVG and OPS
but also have a .275 AVG or lower
and less than .800 OPS
(oh, and a maximum Speed of 7 as well)

Pitchers need to have a WHIP of 1.40 or higher.

The Basics:
16 Teams
8 teams make the playoffs (4 division winners and 4 Wild Cards)
(gives more teams a chance and keeps it interesting!)
162 Game Schedule
No progressions
Fatigue: On
5-Man Rotation
Minimum ABs/IPs: 50 ABs (no IP minimum)
Any season can be used that fits the minimum/maximum requirements (see above)
Players will retire after 13 seasons (there are exceptions to that - see Rules Page)
See Rules Page for more information
