International Prospects attempt to lure interest from MLB: R2WS teams

Story Photo
Yoan Lopez dominated for Cuba in 2026

RF Rosell Herrera, 25 (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) - Herrera won the Caribbean League MVP playing for the Dominican Republic this past season. At 25, he still has some potential for improvement, but should already be a regular starter on an MLB: R2WS team. He has above-average speed, solid defense, and can put the ball in play. He hit .259 for the D.R. in 2026, with 19 SB and 22 HR. If he does not receive at least $5M a year for a minimum of 5 years, he will return to play for the Dominican team in 2027.(Signs with Dodgers for $5M over 6 years, $30M)

CF Carlos Figueroa, 26 (Hermosillo, Mexico) ? Carlos was an All-Star in the Caribbean League last season, playing CF for Mexico. He has above average speed, very solid defense, and is quite a workhorse. He should play every game for a team willing to put him in the lineup. He hit .310 for Mexico in 2026, with 49 SB and 1 HR. Figueroa is asking for at least $4M a year for a minimum of 4 years to sign. (Signs with Orioles for $5M over 7 years, $35M)

1B Carlos Franco, 26 (Bani, Dominican Republic) ? Franco was an All-Star in the Caribbean League last season, playing 1B for the Dominican Republic. He does not have great defense, and he is not very fast. He does put the ball in play, and hits for decent power. He may be better suited for a DH spot. He hit .264 for the D.R. in 2026, with 23 HR and 0 SB. He is looking for at least $3M for 2 years to sign.(Signs with Reds for $3M over 4 years, $12M)

2B Daniel Castro, 26 (Sonora, Mexico) ? Castro played 2B for Mexico in the 2026 season. He has above average defensive skills at 2B. He can put the ball in play, but does not hit for power, and has minimal speed. He will be a solid starter in the league but will most likely not be a superstar. He is looking for $3M a year for a minimum of 3 years to sign with an MLB: R2WS team.(Signs with Mets for $3M over 6 years, $18M)

SS Jose Rondon, 24 (Villa de Cura, Venezuela) ? Jose Rondon player SS for the 2027 Caribbean League Champions in 2026. He has very solid defensive skills, and has solid pop in his bat for a SS. He hit 10 HR in 2026. He has average speed. Rondon is still young, so he still has great upside. He should solidify the middle for some MLB: R2WS team. He is looking for $4M a year for a minimum of 6 years, or he will return to Venezuela.(Signs with Brewers for $6M over 6 years, $36M)

CF Tito Polo, 24 (San Andres Islas, Colombia) ? Without a Columbian Team in the Caribbean League, Polo was able to earn his way onto the Puerto Rican team. Polo brings above average speed, slightly above average defense, and shows the ability to hit for some power. He does not have a great arm for RF, but he does seem to have 4/5 tools. At 24, he still has potential to be a long-term contributor in the outfield. He is looking for at least $4M over 6 years, or he will most likely take a shot in the Arizona League next season.(Signs with Giants for $6M over 6 years, $36M)

RP Rafael Cedeno, 24 (Chitre, Panama) ? Cedeno was a highlight of the Panamanian team this season. He went 9-3 in relief, with a 1.09 WHIP and 7.0 H/9. He pitched 128 innings of relief, so he can eat up some innings. He is looking for a minimum of $3M a year for 7 years to sign with an MLB: RSWS team. (Signs with Giants for $5M over 8 years, $40M)

CL Edgar Santana, 26 (Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic) ? Santana was the closer for the Dominican team in 2026. He earned a Caribbean League All-Star selection in the process. He recorded 37 saves, with a 7-5 record. He managed a .99 WHIP and 5.5 H/9 as well. Santana is ready to take over closing duties for an MLB: R2WS team. He is looking for at least $6M a year for 5 years to sign.(Signs with Orioles for $7M over 7 years, $49M)

RP Kendry Flores, 26 (Azua, Dominican Republic) ? Another great arm in the Dominican bullpen last season, Flores is ready to make his MLB: R2WS debut in 2027. Flores ate up 103 innings for the D.R. in 2026, also earning All-Star honors. He went 13-3 with a 1.65 ERA in 75 appearances. Not a heavy strike thrower, but he gets players to ground into double plays on a regular basis. He wants $3M a year for 5 years to sign a contract in the MLB: R2WS. (Signs with Nationals for $3M over 5 years, $15M)

SP Yoan Lopez, 25 (Nueva Gerona, Cuba) ? Lopez earned the 2026 Cy Young equivalent in the Caribbean League last season. He went 14-2 with a 2.92 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 6.4 H/9. He has a 97-98 MPH fastball and can make batters miss. At 25, he still has some work to do to get to the top of a rotation in MLB: R2WS, but he can provide a significant upgrade to many rotations. He is looking for $5M a year for a minimum of 6 years.(Signs with Red Sox for $8M over 10 years, $80M)

Strasburg excited about new opportunities after Tommy John surgery

Top 10 Free Agent SP?s

There are a few starting pitchers available in free agency this year. Many teams need significant upgrades in their rotations. Let?s look at the top 10 according to this columnist:

1. Stephen Strasburg, 38 - Strasburg?s 2024 season was cut short after he suffered a UCL tear in Los Angeles. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2025 and is finally at 100%. At 38, many thought he would retire. He still has #1 ace ability and could anchor a playoff team for a couple of years.

signs with White Sox for $18M over 3 years, and a total of $54M

2. Takahiro Norimoto, 29 -The Braves paid a $10M fee to the Yakult Swallows for the rights to sign him. He pitched for 1 season, but the Braves failed to make him a long-term offer. He had a stellar season for the last place Braves, though he got very little run support. He should be a #1 or at least a #2 wherever he goes, and is only 29, so he should see a nice payday this offseason.

signs with Diamondbacks for $20M over 5 years, and a total of $100M

3. Yuki Nishi, 29 - Like Norimoto, Nishi was not signed to a long-term contract after a substantial posting fee. The Marlins spent $13M for his rights but could not lock him down. There is not much that separates the two Japanese pitchers. Nishi has a slightly lower K rate but gives up slightly less hits. He pitched a whopping 310 innings last season, so to say he is a workhorse is an understatement. Whatever team that signs him will gain a valuable top of the rotation starter.

signs with Mariners for $8M over 6 years, and a total of $48M

4. Harrison Musgrave, 27 - Musgrave was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2025 draft by the Braves and pitched a full first season in 2026. The Braves failed to sign him to a long-term deal, mostly due to his high WHIP and H9. Still, Musgrave has been working hard this offseason, and with better run support, should still see improvement over his rookie season. Any team that takes a flyer on him, should get a solid middle of the rotation guy for a few years.

signs with Astros for $9M over 7 years, and a total of $63M

5. Karsten Whitson, 28 - Whitson went virtually unnoticed until his breakout rookie season for the Nationals at 27 years old. The Nationals chose not to lock him down, figuring he had reached his maximum potential. He went 11-4 last season (1-0 in playoffs), so he can bolster a rotation. He will add valuable starts to any team that gives him an opportunity.

signs with White Sox for $6M over 4 years, and a total of $24M

6. Chris Stratton, 30 - Stratton is coming off a stellar season with the Phillies, where he went 11-3 (and 1-1 in playoffs). The Phillies have some pitching depth, including two 2026 All-Stars, so they did not put the franchise tag on Stratton. They did however place a 1st round tender on him, which will most likely deter other teams from signing him. Stratton probably is a 3rd or 4th starter on a playoff team, but several teams could use a pitcher of his caliber in their rotation.

returns to Phillies after receiving no offers from other teams. ($15M)

7. Zach Jemiola, 26 - Jemiola struggled last season, but that was with the Marlins. He should improve significantly this season, and still has plenty of upside potential. He should contribute positively in any rotation.

signs with Diamondbacks for $15M over 6 years, and a total of $90M

8. Yudai Ono, 34 - After not pitching in the league in 2025, Ono surprised with a breakout season for the Rays in 2026. He is a workhorse, that should find a spot in the middle of a rotation. If not, he will most likely return to finish out his career in the NPB with the Dragons.

returns to NPB after receiving no offers from other teams.

9. Octavio Acosta, 28 - Acosta could improve many of the rotations in the league, but he did struggle pitching for Mexico in the Caribbean League last season. Acosta might find himself pitching in the Independent League this season, but with some luck, a team will give him a shot.

will pitch in Independent League for Spring Training after receiving no offers from other teams.

10. Luke Weaver, 27 - Weaver struggled to get wins on a terrible Cleveland team, but still pitched well. He has a solid 4 years under his belt, with solid pitching. He should provide a team with a decent option in the bottom of a rotation.
