I-71 World Series Sandbox League

League Rules

The I-71 World Series Sandbox League was established to all but guarantee the Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds would meet in the World Series.

The Indians and Reds were stocked with their best players since 1920 (the end of the Dead Ball Era). The other 30 teams were stocked with some of the worst. In as many cases as possible, these players were assigned to the team they really played for. Some teams (Tampa Bay, Colorado, etc.) have not been around long enough to accumulate enough really bad players. In those cases, really bad players from other teams and defunct teams (St. Louis Browns, etc.) were assigned to help fill out their rosters.

Here are the qualifiers for players:
Position players: Starters 500 or more PA, backups 250 or more PA. Determined by WAR and Fangraphs' offensive and defensive ratings.
Pitchers: SP 100 or more IP; relievers 20-99 IP. Each team was also assigned two or three SP/long relief types. Determined by WHIP and WAR.

Tried to make sure there were 750 PA for each position (16 players), 900 IP for eight starters and 600 IP for 12 relievers. Most of the bad DHs were also eligible at a position, so only a few teams have a true DH. No duplicate players. Imported the 2013 MLB schedule (first year with Astros in the AL).

Here is an agenda for future seasons:
Season 1: As is currently.
Season 2: Same players as in Season 1, but allocate the worst defensive players to two Central Division franchises; the worst offensive players to two franchises; the worst SP to two franchises; the worst RP to two franchises. For a little competition, will stack Yankees and Dodgers rosters with the best opposing players from Season 1.
Season 3: Just the worst players at each position for each franchise. Only players who played a full season for those teams. No players from defunct or other teams, no players with split seasons.
Season 4: Allow duplicate players with edited names to ensure all of the worst seasons get in there.
Season 5: Same players as in Season 4, but allocate the worst defensive players to two Central Division franchises; the worst offensive players to two franchises; the worst SP to two franchises; the worst RP to two franchises. For a little competition, will stack Yankees and Dodgers rosters with the best opposing players from Season 4.
Season 6: Indians/Reds vs. MLB teams from 2018
Season 7: Switch it up ... the BEST players at every position for every franchise.

Some leagues use fictional player progression. To learn more about how players progress, check the Player Potential page.
