The Passing of a Legend

The Passing of a Legend

https://www.latimes.com/obituaries/..

He was my 1st NBA hero. He had his 1st big season during 61-62 when I turned 11 and I was a Lakers fan from then until Kobi pulled the plug on Shaq. When he drafted Magic over Larry, I thought he had made a mistake - but it was me who was mistaken. He was as great a GM as he was a player.

Re: The Passing of a Legend

A lifelong Celtics fan but I remember Jerry West was a killer on the court.
Best story I heard West told it, Bill Russell was there to encourage West since they couldn't get past the Celtics . West said he was really in a depressed state and Russell helped him a lot.
2 of the classiest to ever play professional sports .
RIP the LOGO

Re: The Passing of a Legend

In Fairness Sheik, that was a NO LOSE choice - Magic or Bird - No one could ever find fault in EITHER pick!

Re: Re: The Passing of a Legend

I agree Sin - but Magic was a perfect fit for the Laker and Larry for the Celtics. I grew up outside a really small town in Southern Indiana about 35 miles from French Lick and even though I was living in SoCal by then, rooted for ISU when they make their title run - and got beat by Magic's MSU team. I REALLY wanted the Lakers to draft Bird - I thought he was the next West !! But there never would have been Show Time without the Magic Man.

Re: The Passing of a Legend

Jerry West, truly an all time great player and GM.

Not to be annoying, but got to do this...Just for the record, Jerry West didn't have the chance to draft Larry Bird in 1979.

The Celtics selected Bird in the 1978 draft, and Bird went back to college for his senior season while the Celtics held his rights. He signed his Celtics contract before the 1979 draft, and was not eligible to be picked again in 1979.

Re: Re: The Passing of a Legend

One thing I don't think we'll ever see again , from 1975 to 1980 , all 5 teams in the Pacific division went to the finals and all won a championship except for the Suns. I remember going to the Kingdome to watch the defending champ Sonics play the Lakers. I knew then that their window was closed. Before Larry and Magic , some of the Finals games were shown on tape delay !!

Re: The Passing of a Legend

I remember 1973 listening to the finals on the radio in my uncles kitchen. Wasn't even on TV. I was in the 4th grade. Lakers/Knicks. Crazy.

Re: Re: The Passing of a Legend

Just think of all the great basketball minds that were in that series , Riley ,West , Jackson , Reed. And oh by the way some guy named Bill Bradley who became a US Senator ! Forgot to mention HOF members Wilt ,Dave D , Walt , Jerry Lucas , Earl Monroe and Gail Goodrich. All in all 11 HOFers in one series !!
