Re: Tough start!!

Re: Tough start!!

I was working on this formula at one time that tries to weigh defensive value on guys like Simmons and Gomez. It was: (D(+/-) - E) + H, divided by AB. This can also be converted to OBP/SLG = OPS. The flaw is the assumption that all hits taken away are singles.

It assumes that a hit taken away has the same value as an actual hit by the player. I admit there are probably some flaws in it, but I feel like it gives at least a rough estimate of added defensive value. (Copyright pending 😉)

Here's an example:

Carlos Gomez had this line: .195 BA/.242 OBP/.347 SLG, he made 5 errors and took away 83 hits.
83-5 = 78+ 97 hits = 175 divided by 498 = .351 value added BA. This also projects out to a .399 OBP and .503 SLG.
I just use this to give me some idea of the added value of defense - kind of a cheat sheet for valuing players. (for entertainment purposes only 😎)
