Measures a pitcher's effectiveness based only on plays that do not involve fielders: home runs allowed, strikeouts, hit batters, and walks.
I actually look at it when looking at a pitchers league history or comparing a pitcher across leagues. All things being equal, it works as a tie-breaker when comparing players because it takes defense out of the equation.
