Non Catcher at Catcher

Non Catcher at Catcher

I seem to remember a discussion thread (a long time ago) about using non-Catcher at Catcher and the effects it has on giving up steals. I sometimes get my game sites mixed up sometimes (I play SOM online also), but I'm pretty sure this was a PC issue. Any of the long time guys here have anything regarding this ?

Re: Non Catcher at Catcher

If a player is used at catcher who doesn't have catcher as his primary or secondary position then any player on the opposing team who can steal will attempt to, usually with like 85% steal percentage.

I think a Player who has UT also can catch without the NON Catcher punishment, NOT advisable

Re: Re: Non Catcher at Catcher

My other question would be: If a team only has one Catcher, no backup, can he be injured ? I seem to also remember that your last remaining Catcher can't be injured.

Re: Non Catcher at Catcher

I've never heard of such a thing, and tbh it seems like that would be wayyyy too powerful of an exploit

Re: Re: Non Catcher at Catcher

I think it may be a thing skooler1, I can't ever remember having both C injured - and that's something I would remember. I've had both SS, 3B ,1B, you name it, injured and HAL just sticks someone in the lineup - but not catcher.

"I think a Player who has UT also can catch without the NON Catcher punishment, NOT advisable"

Why not advisable?

Re: Non Catcher at Catcher

I thinking using a UT at catcher depends on the player. It can be a sneaky way to get a plus hitter into the lineup depending upon what type of league it is. There are no inherent penalties but it's important to look at what the player's Fielding % and Dwar are and whether or not they have a strong arm.

Re: Re: Non Catcher at Catcher

@krtyler11 - you would give up an un-godly amount of SB's. I've actually seen it happen before, but it's been a long time. You can't put, to use an example, Louis Gonzalez at C and expect the offense to offset the bad defensive results. My question is, if you only have one catcher on your roster, can he be injured?

Re: Non Catcher at Catcher

Sheik - my question was specific to UT players. I get that I don't want to put an OF at C but Sin mentioned that UT players don't have the non-catcher punishment but then followed that with - not-advisable. And I don't quite understand that. If I have a UT only player (custom league) and his fielding percentage / dwar are fine, why not play him at C?

Re: Re: Non Catcher at Catcher

@krtyler11 I thought the same thing but I interpreted that comment as him meaning it was not advisable to play someone out of position at catcher, not that it was an issue playing UT at catcher. I can’t think of any reason playing UT at catcher is a problem.

Re: Non Catcher at Catcher

@gbacci - My question is: if your starting Catcher is injured, can the backup also be injured? And if you only have 1 Catcher on your roster, can he be injured?

Re: Re: Non Catcher at Catcher

@sheikyerboudi there are supposed to be protections in there preventing a second catcher from getting injured and leaving a team with no healthy catcher... if you see that NOT happening please let me know. (Note, this assumes you have at least two catchers - if you only have one catcher on the roster it won't prevent that catcher from getting injured.)

Re: Non Catcher at Catcher

Thanks - that's exactly the answer I was looking for !!
