Lead Story - 2/8/2024 Cincinnati Reds - 1979 World Series Champions The Cincinnati Reds defeated the New York Yankees 4 games to 1, winning the 1979 World Series which was a hard-fought battle. Ron Guidry and Gary Nolan pitched brilliantly in Game 1, as the game went to extra innings scoreless. Nolan went 8 innings for the Reds, allowing 3 hits, and Guidry went 9.1 for the Yanks allowing 1 run on 6 hits. The Reds broke the drought when Series MVP Johnny Bench hit a 2 out 2 run double in the 10th to give the Reds the victory 2-0. Game 2 was the only runaway. Wayne Simpson continued the shutout pitching for the Reds, allowing 3 hits through 7.2 innings. Joe Lahoud got the scoring started with a 2 run homer in the 2nd and added a 3 run homer in the 5th, leading the Reds to an 8-0 win. Don Gullet allowed 3 runs on 7 hits to lead the Reds to a 3-0 Series lead with the win in Game 3. Dan Driessen hit a 3 run homer in the 3rd putting the Reds on top 4-0. The Yankees finally got on the board after 22 scoreless innings when Davey Johnson hit a 2 run homer in the 5th, to narrow the lead 4-3. The Reds shut them down the remainder of the game to take the game 5-3. The Yankees got into the win column in Game 4 behind Doug Capilla who held the Reds to 6 hits through 7. The Reds scored runs single runs in the 1st 3rd and 4th innings to hold a 3-1 lead into the 6th when Harmon Killebrew hit a solo homer to narrow the lead 3-2. In the 7th, the Yankees scored 4 runs on 5 hits with Bobby Murcer Jim Lyttle and Frank Robinson getting RBIs to take a 6-3 lead. The Reds tried to rally in the 9th but fell short 6-5. Game 5 was a great one. Thurman Munson opened the scoring for the Yankees with a 2 run homer in the 4th, and Willie Randolph hit a 2 run triple in the 5th to give the Yankees a 5-1 lead. In the bottom of the 6th the Reds narrowed the score to 5-4 on Bernie Carbo’s RBI double. Driessen and Stanton followed with RBI singles. The Yankees carried that lead into the bottom of the 9th, when Dave Concepcion hit a walk off 2 run home run to give the Reds the World Championship with a 6-5 victory. Series MVP Johnny Bench led the Reds with a .389 Avg, 1.611 OPS, 2 doubles 1 triple, 1 home run and 5 RBI. Thurman Munson led the Yankees on offense with a .316 Avg, .895 OPS, and 1 home run.

11/14/2023 Cincinnati Reds - 1978 World Series Champions The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 4 games to 1 to win the 1978 World Series. The Series was closer than the Series implies, with games 4 and 5 going to extra innings. The Reds jumped out on top 3-0 in the first inning of Game 1 led by Bernie Carbo’s RBI double. The Brewers narrowed the lead to 3-2 on Rusty Torres’ 3rd inning homer. Leroy Stanton expanded the Reds lead to 5-2 in the 4th, and the Brewers scored in the 5th and 6th to narrow the gap, but fell short. The Reds took the early Series lead with the 5-4 win. The Reds jumped out in front early in Game 2 with a 5-2 lead after 3. In the 6th, Rusty Torres hit an RBI triple and scored for the Brewers to tie the game, 5-5. Gorman Thomas hit a 2 run homer in the top of the 8th to give to give the Brewers the victory 7-6, evening the Series. Wayne Simpson pitched 8 strong innings for the Reds in Game 3, holding the Brewers to 1 run, striking out 10. The Reds jumped out in front early, scoring 4 runs in the 1st. After walking the bases loaded Dan Driessen hit a sac fly and Pete Rose followed with a 2 RBI double. The Reds took the Series lead with the 5-1 victory. The Brewers jumped out in front in Game 4, 3-0 in the 1st. Frank Tepedino started the scoring with a solo homer, and Rick Auerbach followed with a 2 run double. The Reds narrowed the lead in the 4th and tied it in the 5th on Carbo’s RBI double. The game remained tied at 3-3 into extra innings. In the top of the 12th, the Reds exploded for 6 runs. Johnny Bench hit a 2 RBI double, and Stanton followed with a 3 run homer giving the Reds the win 9-3 and the Series lead 3-1. In Game 5 the Brewers took the early lead 2-0 on solo homers by Gorman Thomas in the 1st and Darrell Porter in the 4th. The Reds tied the game 2-2 in the 7th on Bench’s RBI. Rich Morales put the Reds on top 3-2 in the top of the 9th, but the Brewers tied the game 3-3 on Ed Brinkman’s RBI single in the bottom half of the 9th. In the top of the 10th, the Reds scored 7 runs. Series MVP Joe Lahoud started the scoring leading off with a homer, and closed the inning with a 2 RBI single. The Reds won the Championship with the 10-3 victory. Joe Lahoud won the Series MVP batting .368 with a 1.526 OPS, 3 doubles 1 Home Run and 6 RBI. Gorman Thomas led the Brewers on offense batting .263 with a 1.632 OPS 3 Home Runs, 2 doubles and 5 RBI.

8/21/2023 Cleveland Indians - 1977 World Series Champion The Cleveland Indians defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 games to 0 to win the 1977 World Series. The Indians’ bullpen was the key to the Indians World Championship, pitching 11 scoreless innings. Closer Horacio Pina took the Series MVP Award with 4 saves, a 0.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 4.5 K/9. In Game 1 both teams battled scoreless through 4. Willie Crawford’s RBI single gave the Indians a 1-0 lead in the 5th, and Rennie Stennett’s 3 run home run put the Indians ahead 4-0 into the top of the 7th. The Pirates narrowed the lead to 4-3, but Pina closed the door giving the Indians the victory 4-3. Game 2 was a scoreless 13 inning marathon. The Pirates’ Dock Ellis allowed 3 hits through 8, and the Indians Roger Moret allowed 5 hits through 7. In the top of the 13th, Len Randle broke the scoreless tie with a RBI triple. Pina finished for his 2nd save, and the Indians took the game 1-0. The Pirates took the early lead 2-0 behind Richie Hebner’s solo homer in the 2nd. With the Pirates up 3-1, the Indians tied the game in the bottom of the 5th on Jim Wohlford’s solo homer and Rich Coggins’s triple. In the Bottom of the 6th, Steve Ontiveros put the Indians on top for good; Pina got his 3rd save and the Indians won 6-3, hoping for a Series sweep. Game 4 was another Pitching duel. The Indians Dennis Eckersley pitched 7 2/3 allowing 1 run and 2 hits and the Pirates John Candelaria went 6 innings allowing 1 run on 6 hits. With the score tied at 1 in the top of the 7th, Jeff Burroughs hit a 2 run homer to give the Indians a 3-1 lead. Pina closed the door for his 4th Save giving the Indians the World Championship.

6/2/2023 Minnesota Twins - 1976 World Series Champion The Minnesota Twins beat the Cincinnati Reds 4 games to 1 to win the 1976 World Series. The Twins offense was dominant in their 4 wins, racking up 29 runs on 43 hits and 14 home Runs. The Twins scored runs in 5 innings in Game 1 to cruise to a 7-4 victory. Ed Kranepool hit 2 homers and Graig and Jim Nettles each had 1 homer. Mike Andrews started the scoring with a 2nd inning RBI, and the Twins scored again in the 4th 5th 6th and 7th tapping the Reds for 11 hits. The Reds lone bright spot in the Series was Game 2. The Reds scored 8 runs on 14 hits and Don Gullet held the Twins to 3 runs on 6 hits in route to an 8-3 victory. With the Series tied at 1, the Twins took control in Game 3 and did not look back. The Reds took an early 2-1 lead in the 1st on back to back home runs by Bernie Carbo and Joe Lahoud. In the 4th the Twins took the lead for good with solo homers by Jim Nettles and Kranepool. They followed with 6 runs in the 5th on RBI doubles by Graig Nettles and Glenn Borgmann in route to a 10-4 victory. The Twins kept pounding out hits in Game 4, scoring 8 runs on 13 hits, dominating the Reds Pitching. Andrews hit a 2nd inning 2 run homer, Jim Howarth hit a solo homer in the 7th and Eric Soderholm hit a 2 run homer in the 8th in route to a 8-3 victory. Dave Goltz brought the Twins the Championship in Game 5, going 8 innings, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits. The Twins hit 3 more home runs in the game with Graig Nettles starting it off with a 3rd inning solo homer. Tony Perez tied the Game in the top of the 4th with a solo homer for the Reds, and the Twins responded with a 2 run homer in the bottom half by Borgmann. Howarth added a solo homer in the 7th giving the Twins the victory 4-2. Graig Nettles won the Series MVP batting .471, with a 1.765 OPS, 1 double, 3 home runs and 5 RBI. Bernie Carbo led the Reds offense with a .333 Avg, 1.611 OPS, 1 double, 3 home runs and 4 RBI.

3/13/2023 Pittsburgh Pirates - 1975 World Series Champions The Pittsburgh Pirates won the 1975 World Series defeating the Boston Red Sox 4 games to 1. George Lauzerique pitched a 4 hit shutout giving the Pirates a Game 1 victory. Richie Hebner started things off in the 2nd with a solo home run and added another in the 9th. Richie Zisk tripled in a run in the 5th and Dave Cash added a 2 run homer in the 7th leading the Pirates to a 7-0 win. The Pirates jumped out early in Game 2 on 1st inning RBI doubles by Bob Robertson and Hebner. The Red Sox took the lead in the 4th on Carlton Fisk’s 2 run homer. The Pirates responded in the top of the 5th to tie the game at 3 on an RBI single by Hebner. Carl Taylor broke the tie in the 8th with a solo homer giving the Pirates the lead 4-3 and added 3 insurance runs in the top of the 9th to take a 2 games to non series lead with the 7-3 victory. The Red Sox got in the win column in Game 3 as Jim Merritt held the Pirates to 1 run on 1 hit through 7. The Red Sox took an early lead in the first on RBIs by Reggie Smith and Rico Petrocelli. Fred Lynn extended the lead in the 2nd with a solo homer and Tony Horton added a 2 run homer in the 7th leading the Red Sox to a 7-4 victory. Jerry Stephenson got the Game 4 victory for the Pirates holding the Red Sox to 2 runs on 7 hits, putting them up 3 games to 1. The Red Sox held a 1-0 lead into the 4th, and Zisk’s RBI grounder tied the game. Freddie Patek hit a 3 run home run in the 5th to give the Pirates the lead and the victory 4-2. George Lauzerique pitched another gem in Game 5, allowing 1 run on 6 hits. The game went scoreless through 5; Jimmy Wynn gave the Red Sox a 1-0 lead in the top of the 6th with a solo homer. The Pirates responded scoring 3 in the bottom half. With the bases loaded, Cash drove in the tying run with a FC hit, and Manny Sanguillen cleared the bases with a 2 run double. The Pirates took the victory 3-1 bringing the World Championship to Pittsburgh. George Lauzerique was the Series MVP with 2 wins, 0.63 ERA, 0.915 WHIP, 5.07 K/9 Richie Hebner led the Pirates on offense with a .385 Avg, 2.077 OPS, 3 doubles, 2 Home Runs and 6 RBI. Reggie Smith led the Red Sox on offense with a .313 Avg, .875 OPS, and 1 Triple.
