Baltimore Orioles - 1998 World Series Champions

The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 4 games to 2 to win the 1998 World Series. It was a pitchers series, with 4 games decided by 1 run.
The Dodgers outhit the Orioles in Game 1, but left 11 on base. The Dodgers scored 2 in the first inning. The Orioles responded with runs in each of the first 3 innings to take a 3-2 lead. In the top of the 4th the Dodgers tied the game on Doug Jennings solo homer. The game remained tied into extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th, Jeff Conine hit a 2 out 2 run homer to give the Orioles the opening game victory, 5-3.
Cy Young Winner, Jimmy Haynes pitched a 4 hit complete game shutout in Game 2, leading the Orioles to a 1-0 victory. Jack Voight hit a RBI single in the bottom of the 6th giving the Orioles the single run needed for victory.
Ben McDonald gave the Orioles a 3-0 Series lead, holding the Dodgers to 1 run on 3 hits pitching a complete game. Conine hit a RBI triple in the first and Cal Ripken had a RBI in the 2nd, giving the Orioles a 2-0 lead. The Dodgers narrowed the lead in the 7th on Eric Karros solo homer, but the Orioles held on for a 2-1 victory.
The Dodgers won their first win of the Series behind Ramon Martiniez who allowed 1 run on 4 hits. Dave Hansen hit a RBI single in the first to put the Dodgers on top 1-0. Conine brought in a run tying the game in the top of the 3rd, and in the bottom half, Mike Piazza put the Dodgers back on top with a solo Home Run. The Dodgers held on for a 2-1 victory.
Pedro Martinez helped the Dodgers narrow the Series 3 games to 2 holding the Orioles to 1 run on 6 hits. Piazza and Raul Mondesi had RBI singles in the 1st to put the Dodgers up early 2-0. Piazza added a 2 RBI single in the 7th leading the Dodgers to the win, 5-1.
Jimmy Haynes pitched his 2nd gem of the Series in Game 6. Allowing 1 unearned run, Haynes pitched a complete game 3 hitter. Gregg Zaun put the Orioles up 1-0 in the 3rd with a RBI single. The Dodgers tied the game in the 6th on Mondesi’s RBI. The Game remained tied 1-1 into the 9th. In the bottom of the 9th, Cal Ripken gave the Orioles the win, 2-1, and the World Championship with a 2 out RBI single.
Jimmy Haynes was the Series MVP, pitching 2 complete games, 2 wins, 0.00 ERA, 0.667 WHIP, a 5.0 K/9

Cleveland Indians - 1997 World Series Champions

The Cleveland Indians defeated the Houston Astros 4 games to 3 to win the 1997 World Series.
The Astros took the opening game of the Series behind Pascual Perez who held the Indians to 1 run on 4 hits. Ken Caminiti and Craig Biggio hit RBI singles in the 1st to lead the Astros to a 5-1 victory.
The Indians evened the Series in Game 2 with their offense exploding with 11 hits. Jim Thome opened the scoring with a 1st inning 2 run homer. Manny Ramirez hit a 2 run double in the 3rd to give the Indians a 5-0 lead. Leading 5-3 in the 6th, the Indians scored 5 runs in the inning; Albert Belle had an RBI single, Brian Giles hit a 2 run double and Thome hit a RBI triple to give the Indians the victory 10-3.
The Indians’ Denis Boucher No Hit the Astros in Game 3, striking out 5 in the 9 inning gem. Albert Belle started the scoring in the 1st with a RBI double. The Indians added single runs in the 3rd 4th 5th and 7th. Giles went 4 for 4, scoring 4 runs with a 5th inning homer. The Indians took the game 5-0.
The Astros tied the Series in Game 4 with a 7-6 victory. The Indians took the lead 4-1 in the 5th, behind Brian Giles’ 2 run homer. The Astros narrowed the lead on Caminiti’s 2 run homer in the 6th, and took the lead 5-4 in the 7th on back to back solo homers by Karl Rhodes and Jeff Bagwell. Caminiti hit his second 2 run homer in the 9th to tie the Series for the Astros.
The Indians took the early lead in Game 5 on Jim Thome’s 1st inning homer. Gerald Young hit a 2 run double in the top of the 3rd to give the Astros a 2-1 lead. The Indians answered in the bottom half with Belle’s 3 run homer. Jim Thome expanded the lead with a 2 run homer in the 5th giving the Indians the victory 6-4.
Terry Mulholland evened the Series for the Astros, pitching a 2 hit shutout. The Astros got their only runs in the 4th on Luis Gonzalez’ RBI triple and Craig Biggio’s Sac Fly. On to Game 7… Astros 2, Indians 0.
Game 7 was a great contest. The Indians took the early lead on Carlos Baerga’s RBI. The Astros took the lead 2-1 in the 3rd on Pat Lennon’s RBI single. The Indians followed in the top of the 4th with 3 runs on a 2 RBI single by Baerga to take a 4-2 lead. The score remained that way into the bottom of the 8th, and Andujar Cedeno tied it for the Astros with a 2 run homer. In the top of the 9th, Manny Ramirez put the Indians back on top with a RBI single and the Efrain Valdez closed it out with the Save, giving the Indians the World Championship with the 5-4 victory.
Brian Giles took the Series MVP batting .346 with a 1.615 OPS, scoring 10 runs with 5 doubles, 1 triple and 2 home runs.
Ed Taubensee led the Astros offense batting .333 with a 1.048 OPS 1 double and 1 homer.

Atlanta Braves - 1996 World Series Champions

The Atlanta Braves swept the Chicago White Sox 4 games to 0 to win the 1996 World Series. The Braves pitching staff controlled the Series, holding the White Sox batters to a .140 batting average.
John Smoltz went the distance in Game 1 holding the White Sox to 2 runs on 3 hits in route to a 4-2 victory. Series MVP Ryan Klesko drove in all 4 Braves runs with a first inning 2 run homer and a 5th inning 2 run homer.
Game 2 was a great one. The White Sox jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st. After loading the bases, Robin Ventura doubled in all 3 runners. The Braves narrowed the lead on Pedro Munoz 2 run homer in the 4th and tied the game in the 6th on Munoz’ RBI double. The game went into extra innings, and continued scoreless for 6 innings. In the top of the 16th Chipper Jones broke the tie with a leadoff homer. Munoz and Klesko added RBI singles and the Braves got the victory 6-3.
The White Sox opened the scoring in Game 3 with Bobby Bonilla’s RBI single. The Braves answered in the bottom half with RBIs by Klesko and David Justice. Taking a 3-1 lead into the 5th, the White Sox narrowed the lead to 3-2 on Scott Fletcher’s RBI. The Braves answered with RBI’s by Ron Gant and Jones. Up 5-3 in the 7th, the Braves broke the game open scoring 4 runs on a solo homer by David Justice and a 2 run homer by Glenn Hubbard to take a 3-0 Series lead with the 9-3 victory.
Tom Glavine wrapped up the Series in Game 4 pitching a complete game, allowing 1 run on 4 hits. The Braves opened the scoring in the 3rd on Munoz’ RBI single, followed by Justice’s 2 run double. Klesko put the Braves up 4-0 with a solo homer in the 5th in route to the Championship with a 4-1 victory.
Series MVP Ryan Klesko was on fire in the Series, batting .529 with a 2.000 OPS, 3 homers and 7 RBI.
Bobby Bonilla led the White Sox on offense with a .313 with a 1.000 OPS and 2 doubles.

Chicago White Sox - 1995 World Series Champions

The Chicago White Sox completed a Three Peat with a 4 games to 1 victory over the Atlanta Braves in the 1995 World Series.
The Braves took an early 4-1 lead in Game 1 on a Grand Slam by Bob Horner in the 3rd inning. In the 6th Kenny Williams put the White Sox on top with a 3 run homer. Darryl Boston hit a 2 RBI single in the 7th leading the White Sox to a 7-4 victory.
In Game 2 the Braves took an early lead in the 2nd on a homer by Rolando Roomes. The White Sox responded with a RBI by Ron Karkovice in the 3rd and built a 3-2 lead into the 6th. The Braves tied the game in the 7th with a RBI by John Rabb. In the 8th, Kenny Williams’ 3 run homer gave the White Sox a 6-3 victory.
David Nied got the Braves their first win of the Series pitching 7 shutout innings allowing 4 hits. Horner opened the scoring with a 2nd inning solo homer. In the 4th Rabb hit a solo homer and David Justice hit a 3 run homer leading the Braves to a 5-1 victory.
The White Sox dominated Game 4 scoring 13 runs on 16 hits. The White Sox scored runs in innings 2 through 7 with RBIs by 8 players. They exploded for 5 runs in the 4th with RBI doubles by Boston Scott Fletcher and Frank Thomas in route to a 13-3 victory.
John Smoltz and Frank Castillo dueled to a 1-1 tie in Game 5. Smoltz pitched 9 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits, striking out 8. Castillo went 8, allowing 1 run on 5 hits striking out 4. Rabb’s RBI double in the 2nd put the Braves on top, and held that lead through 7. The White Sox tied it in the 8th on Robin Ventura’s RBI single. Ron Karkovice ended the game with a solo homer in the 10th, giving the White Sox the World Championship with a 2-1 extra inning victory.
Series MVP goes to Kenny Williams, who batted .389 with a 1.167 OPS, 1 double 1 Home Run and 5 RBI.
Bob Horner led the Braves offense with a .300 avg, 1.200 OPS, 2 doubles 2 Home Runs and 5 RBI.

Chicago White Sox - 1994 World Series Champions

The Chicago White Sox won Back-to-Back World Championships defeating the Atlanta Braves 4 games to 3. The Series featured outstanding pitching by Frank Castillo and Tom Glavine, both getting 2 wins. Castillo won the Series MVP with a 1.37 ERA, .687 WHIP and 3.43 K/9. Glavine did not allow an earned run with 2 complete games, one perfect, finishing with a .166 WHIP and 6.0 K/9.
The Braves started the Series strong, taking the first two games behind dominant pitching. David Nied took got the win in Game 1, holding the White Sox to 3 hits. Gerald Perry had RBI singles in the 3rd and 4th, driving in 3 runs leading the Braves to a 6-1 victory.
Tom Glavine was lights out in this World Series, pitching a perfect game in game 2. The Braves had 13 hits in the game. David Justice hit a solo homer in the 1st, and RBI single in the 5th and a 2 run homer in the 7th leading the Braves to a 9-0 victory.
Frank Castillo outbattled John Smoltz in Game 3 to earn a much-needed win for the White Sox. Castillo pitched seven shutout innings, allowing 2 hits. Smoltz walked in a run in the 2nd and Daryl Boston’s 7th inning RBI single added an insurance run giving the White Sox the win 2-0.
The White Sox tied the Series at 2 each in Game 4. Ron Gant put the Braves on top with a RBI single in the top of the first; the White Sox responded with a 2 run homer by Boston in the bottom half. The Braves pulled ahead 3-2 in the top of the 3rd on Gant’s 2 run homer. The White Sox went up for good, scoring 5 runs in the 5th on RBI doubles by Frank Thomas, Kenny Williams and Matt Merullo. White Sox 8, Braves 4.
Game 5 was a good one. The White Sox took the early lead 3-0, scoring one run in each of the first thee innings. Thomas’ RBI started the scoring in the 1st, Ozzie Guillen hit a solo homer in the 2nd and Thomas extended the lead in the 3rd with a RBI single. The Braves chipped away at the lead with a Brett Butler RBI single in the 5th, Gant hit an RBI in the 6th and scored on Justice’s RBI single in the 8th tying the game at 3. The Game went to extra innings. Craig Grebeck hit a walk off Homer in the bottom of the 10th to give the White Sox the 4-3 victory and a 3-2 Series lead.
Game 6 was a great pitching duel. Glavine pitched another complete game gem holding the White Sox to 1 unearned run on 3 hits. Brit Burns also pitched a complete game holding the Braves to 2 runs on 4 hits. Bobby Bonilla hit a RBI single in the top of the 1st giving the White Sox an early lead. The Braves responded with Justice’s 2 run homer in the bottom half of the 1st. Both pitcher pitched shutout ball the last 8 innings. Braves 2, White Sox 1. On to game 7.
Frank Castillo got his 2nd win of the Series, holding the Braves to 2 runs on 4 hits through 6, giving the White Sox the Championship. The Braves took the lead 2-0 scoring on Justice’s RBI single in the 1st and John Rabb’s solo homer in the 2nd. Castillo shut the Braves offense down the rest of the way. Boston hit a solo homer in the 3rd to narrow the lead and Frank Thomas hit a solo homer in the 5th to tie it. Smoltz allowed the Sox to pull ahead with a run scoring wild pitch in the 6th and Bonilla iced the game with a 2-run homer in the 8th. White Sox 5, Braves 2.
Daryl Boston led the White Sox offense with a .280 Avg, 1.080 OPS, 2 doubles, 2 home runs and 4 RBI.
David Justice led the Braves offense with a .308 Avg, 1.231 OPS, 1 double, 3 home runs and 8 RBI.

Chicago White Sox - 1993 World Series Champion

The Chicago White Sox defeated the New York Mets 4 games to 3 to win the 1993 World Series.
Joel Davis brought the White Sox a victory in Game 1, holding the Mets to 2 runs on 6 hits. After both teams exchanged runs in the first, the White Sox pulled ahead in the 3rd on Bobby Bonilla’s 3 run homer giving the White Sox the win 5-2.
After falling behind 1-0 in Game 2, the Mets took the lead in the 3rd on Jose Oquendo’s 2 run single and took a 4-1 lead in the 4th on Dave Magadan’s 2 run homer. The White Sox tied the game in the 6th, but the Mets retook the lead in the 8th on Kevin Mitchell’s RBI double. The Mets added 3 in the 9th to tie the Series with the 8-4 victory.
Sid Fernandez allowed 1 run on 4 hits, striking out 6 to lead the Mets to a 4-1 victory in Game 3. Mark Carreon led the way on offense for the Mets with a 2 run single in the 5th and a 2 run homer in the 7th.
Game 4 was one of missed opportunities, with both teams leaving 15 runners on base. The Mets opened the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd with RBIs by Magadan and Backman. In the top of the 4th the White Sox tied the game at 2 with RBIs by Ozzie Guillen and Scott Fletcher. The White Sox took the lead in the 8th 3-2 on a RBI single by Bonilla. The Mets sent the game into extra innings in the bottom of the 9th on Oquendo’s solo homer. In the top of the 13th Craig Grebeck hit the game winning homer giving the White Sox the victory 4-3 tying the series at 2.
Doc Gooden pitched a complete game 4 hitter allowing 1 run striking out 7 to lead the Mets to a 6-1 victory in Game 5. A two base error allowed the Mets to get 3 unearned in the 4th and Darryl Strawberry tripled and scored in the 5th to lead the Mets to victory.
Leading the Series 3 games to 2, the Mets were in control of Game 6 behind the 3 hit pitching of Tim Conroy. Trailing 3-1 with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, the White Sox rallied. Bosley Singled, and Series MVP, Ron Karkovice, followed with a 2 run homer to tie the game. Guillen doubled and Fletcher singled to drive in the game winner. On to game 7 with the 4-3 White Sox win.
Sid Fernandez and Britt Burns dueled in Game 7. Fernandez pitched 7 for the Mets, allowing 1 run on 2 hits, striking out 9. Burns pitched 5 innings of shutout ball allowing 3 hits for the Sox. Karkovice put the Sox up 1-0 in the 2nd with an RBI double. The Mets took the lead in the top of the 7th with RBIs by Dykstra and Jeffries. Bonilla doubled to tie the Game for the Sox in the bottom of the 8th. In the Bottom of the 9th, Karkovice doubled, and advanced to 3rd on a Wild Pitch and Scored the winning run on a Wild Pitch. White Sox wins 3-2 and takes the World Series Championship.
Ron Karkovice won the Series MVP leading the White Sox with .304 Avg, 1.304 OPS, 4 doubles, 1 home Run and 4 RBI.
Gregg Jeffries led the Mets on offense with a .233 Avg, 1.300 OPS, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 3 Home Runs and 6 RBI.
