Lead Story - 4/2/2024 Baltimore Orioles - 1998 World Series ChampionsThe Baltimore Orioles defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 4 games to 2 to win the 1998 World Series. It was a pitchers series, with 4 games decided by 1 run. The Dodgers outhit the Orioles in Game 1, but left 11 on base. The Dodgers scored 2 in the first inning. The Orioles responded with runs in each of the first 3 innings to take a 3-2 lead. In the top of the 4th the Dodgers tied the game on Doug Jennings solo homer. The game remained tied into extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th, Jeff Conine hit a 2 out 2 run homer to give the Orioles the opening game victory, 5-3. Cy Young Winner, Jimmy Haynes pitched a 4 hit complete game shutout in Game 2, leading the Orioles to a 1-0 victory. Jack Voight hit a RBI single in the bottom of the 6th giving the Orioles the single run needed for victory. Ben McDonald gave the Orioles a 3-0 Series lead, holding the Dodgers to 1 run on 3 hits pitching a complete game. Conine hit a RBI triple in the first and Cal Ripken had a RBI in the 2nd, giving the Orioles a 2-0 lead. The Dodgers narrowed the lead in the 7th on Eric Karros solo homer, but the Orioles held on for a 2-1 victory. The Dodgers won their first win of the Series behind Ramon Martiniez who allowed 1 run on 4 hits. Dave Hansen hit a RBI single in the first to put the Dodgers on top 1-0. Conine brought in a run tying the game in the top of the 3rd, and in the bottom half, Mike Piazza put the Dodgers back on top with a solo Home Run. The Dodgers held on for a 2-1 victory. Pedro Martinez helped the Dodgers narrow the Series 3 games to 2 holding the Orioles to 1 run on 6 hits. Piazza and Raul Mondesi had RBI singles in the 1st to put the Dodgers up early 2-0. Piazza added a 2 RBI single in the 7th leading the Dodgers to the win, 5-1. Jimmy Haynes pitched his 2nd gem of the Series in Game 6. Allowing 1 unearned run, Haynes pitched a complete game 3 hitter. Gregg Zaun put the Orioles up 1-0 in the 3rd with a RBI single. The Dodgers tied the game in the 6th on Mondesi’s RBI. The Game remained tied 1-1 into the 9th. In the bottom of the 9th, Cal Ripken gave the Orioles the win, 2-1, and the World Championship with a 2 out RBI single. Jimmy Haynes was the Series MVP, pitching 2 complete games, 2 wins, 0.00 ERA, 0.667 WHIP, a 5.0 K/9 Gregg Zaun led the Orioles on offense with a .348 Avg, .870 OPS, 1 double and 3 RBI Jose Offerman led the Dodgers on offense with a .364 Avg, .864 OPS, 1 double. |
