I would like to go to a random draft order from next season. Does anybody have a good reason why we should not do that?
I do not like the fact that less active owners are rewarded with better draft picks in this league while more active owners are stuck with low draft picks, which inevitably makes the teams of the inactive owners stronger than the rest. I enjoy the challenge of trying to win with a team of 10th-12th round picks, but it does seem unfair and wrong that the best way to win in this league is to lose first.

I honestly don’t understand why wanted to change up again. There is contention for title in both leagues. Like it was mentioned earlier it seems like a team has to struggle for a few years to get better though picks, not far from reality, I don’t see how the solution is to take away odds of improvement from bottom teams to give to better teams. This will make it harder for those bottom teams, especially since there is no free agency to supplement your roster if you lose out in rookie draft
Random draft order may be the solution. I have done that in other leagues with positive results.
I wouldn't be opposed to changes in the draft order method. I would be fine with random, a lottery, a weighted lottery, or just a draft order that changed by so may positions each season. I think all are valid.
Owners that are less active tend to lose more and, therefore, get to draft better players and owners that are more active tend to win more and, therefore, get stuck drafting late and adding weaker players.
What I dislike most about this league is the fact that successful teams are effectively punished for their success by not being able to draft good players.
I understand what you are saying and I think you make a good point, one that I may not have given enough consideration.
I guess what I'm saying is that I would be fine making adjustments to the league but don't want to see more changes to the players on the teams. I hope that makes sense haha
I think since we did the last reboot my oldest player is like 25? Until those players start to peak I still feel like I'm playing with a random team that I for the most part didn't even compile.
That's a hard one for me. I think there are possible improvements, but it also gets very frustrating when changes are made after you start building your teams and before any of those players even reach their peak. I have been drafting players with more long term potential so I would hate to see a major change before I even got to see what they could do.
If yes, I have an idea.

It is early yet, but Lake Mills is making a strong case so far for "the process".
Even though few owners have voted in the league poll, it seems clear enough to me that people do not want to change divisions and schedule. Therefore, the only change going into Season 6 will be the position/age aspect of the rosters. Otherwise, the league will remain the same.

@Mats17 One thing you may not be considering regarding your 3-round draft idea is that, as commissioner, I want to keep things simple (ie. less work for me). As it is, we have four more players in each pool than will be drafted, so that give even the last team five players to choose from. If we go to my new format and eliminate the batter/pitcher issue, drafting teams will have an even greater range of choices since they will no longer be restricted to only half the free agent pool.
Based on this discussion, I have decided not to do a full reset, but I am leaning toward editing ages and moving to the age/position aspect of my new idea. As for the division/playoff format, I would like to hear from more owners about that.
IMO a reset is not nessesary. A couple minor tweaks and this league will be dialed in

In regards to larger draft class. Why not import enough players for 3 rounds but then remove enough players to bring that total down to two rounds. Then gives option to delete some players with better stats to keep overall player quality level where you are targeting
That makes sense. I'm more open to the reset on that plan. Then everyone could keep the players they already drafted (even if the ages do change some).
I import random players for the draft. The more players I add, the higher the quality of the players selected because the bad ones will not get picked. The age editing idea may be the best compromise plan. I agree with you about completely starting over. As bad as my team has been so far, after nearly five short seasons with my roster I am kind of attached and would prefer not to give it up.
I would definitely be more open to having the ages edited on current players than entire new rosters.
That's understandable about the draft picks. My thought on expanding it wasn't adding more good players but just more players in general. More bad players if you will lol.

Regarding you point about not wanting to give up a roster you have already invested time in developing, we could switch to my new format without starting over completely. I could edit ages to make everyone at each position the same age. That would alter things somewhat, but teams would not be losing players they have grown attached to.
@bush484 Thank you for that. I agree with you about the trading. I only allow it in this league because I cannot see any reason not to. I am willing to be flexible but the reason I do not want to expand draft classes is because that would simply turn this into another all-star league just like most of the others. I want to have bad players in this league and I want to find a way to win with bad players in my lineups. Honestly, I would prefer to have only 12 players available in the draft so that the team picking last gets stuck with whatever scrub is remaining at the bottom of the barrel.
Here's some things I think might help: 1) expand size of draft classes. 2) have a minimum of 9 pitchers and 11 batters but let people draft whichever they want as long as they stay above the minimum for each. 3) eliminate trading, it's not really necessary in this type of league.
I do like the current format. I don't think expanding playoffs is necessary in such a short season league.
I think the biggest thing for me is losing the team that I've been getting used to and working on.
I am sensing a lack of enthusiasm for my new plan. Would people be more interested in the idea if teams could keep most of their current rosters? Is part of the objection about the 3 division/5 playoff team part?
To be clear, the options are not simply either/or. We could take some parts of the new plan and work them into the current format. If people like the new roster idea but not the divisions/playoffs part, for example, we can compromise.

I voted for current setup but I do like idea of changing number of pitchers and batters to a small range. That would open up trading and drafting options. Otherwise in my opinion we have 4 different winner over 4 years, I personally have gone from the top of league to close to the bottom and am again in competitive position. Cool. My preference would be a slow draft if we do a reset. It's a lot of seasons to play with a team you didn't pick. Although I'm not sure exactly how that would work if all players at that position are the same age.
Just my 2 cents but I rarely trade. I kinda like drafting my own players and seeing what I can do with them. When I do trade, it’s usually someone else makes an offer that makes a lot of sense for my team but most of the time it only really helps the other team lol.
Also, I do not think trading is the most important thing. I have run a number of fun leagues that either had no trading allowed or in which very little trading occurred.
Multiple players is the scenario I had in mind.
I'm not entirely sure if the new system will promote that much trading. Maybe more so with pitchers. But with hitters wouldn't one team be trading a player they drafted for a player that they could have drafted if they wanted in the first place? Maybe if you're trading multiple players at a time it would make more sense, I'm not sure.
The Bulldogs just lost for the second time this season to my awful team. It appears management at Lake Mills is determined to win the race for the top pick in the draft. Good luck!

I like the aspect of making tough decisions as well. I think opening up the range for number of pitchers and batters, that would open up more potential for trades as well.
I think that is a good idea. I had a league a few years ago that worked much like this one with quick seasons and a one-round draft each week. In that league with 16 teams we had 16 players in each draft pool. I liked it for that league because it forced people to make unusual decisions such as big bat vs. positional need. Also, it left teams with too many SS or not enough OF. It made the league unique. I am not sure it is working in this league, so maybe we need a larger draft pool. Also, perhaps we should not require teams to have 14 batters and 10 pitchers. 15/9 to 11/13 will allow the sim to run.
As q suggestion, it might be helpful if the player pool at draft time is a little bigger. This time I needed a SS, there was only 1 available and luckily I got him. However if anyone in front of me would have taken the SS then I would have been forced to play the season with someone who didn't even have a secondary position of SS.
I am finding the same thing. Either patience or some rule adjustments may be necessary.
I'm only now realizing with how players retire, it is pretty challenging to build a complete team in this league! Hmm....

Well I wouldn’t go that far. :) this is only the 2nd season so most of our rosters were given to us when we signed up. For instance I have a SP who is a 10 RK. Not much I can do with that!
It took until the 12th inning of game 7 to prove it, but we now know conclusively that we are all idiots.
New owner, dirkgomavs41, has boldly elected to dump the 1st-place Rats for the more challenging job of turning around the RipTides.
The Rats have a new owner, so we are up to 11. Perhaps contraction can wait. By the way, while we have team names in both English and Japanese in this league, language is not limited to just those two. Any language, such as, for example, Korean is acceptable.
People are not exactly knocking down the door to join this league. Meanwhile, one of our ghost teams is kicking our asses. If you know anyone that might like to join this league, please invite them. If we finish this season with two ownerless teams, we will have to consider dropping down to 10 teams. That will mean days off in the second half and fewer games overall.

With such short seasons, one hot streak can take a team to a pennant and possibly a championship. This league is not typical. It is a bit experimental. Let's give it a few seasons and see how it goes.

We are already over halfway through our second season. Seasons only take about one week to complete. Be patient and draft well. Your team will improve.
Trades are available, but the rules make them difficult. The Jacobson/Lemon trade is illegal and will be reversed because the players are not the same age. Please read about trading on the Rules page.
The draft is far and away the primary way to improve your team. Since we have short, quick seasons in this league, if you draft well you should be able to improve your team fairly quickly.

How are we building our teams, just after every championship we get a rookie player? Shouldn’t we have free agents to add or more players ? 1 player a season doesn’t change things for a few seasons. And nobody will trade , because you got to give up quality for quality, I’m just asking

I think it will take a few of these short seasons to get a feel for this league and to assess whether or not it is working, but one thing I can say with certainty even at this early stage is that my team really sucks. After giving it some thought, I have decided draft order will be based on regular season standings. If, after a few seasons, it feels like random order would be better, we can make that change.
Random order takes away any incentive to tank. Order based on record rewards ineptitude but also maintains balance. There are arguments for both ways.

I am not as big a fan of war in general as some people and would prefer not to have war-related team names in this league. I realize, a mere 80 years after the war ended, it is still hard for some Americans to think about Japan without focusing on WWII, but I would prefer to keep this league peaceful and to keep war-related team names out.
