League Rules

Through the Looking Glass 1993

1. Basic Pitch: You should be able to take any team you want: you shouldn’t have to study, and over study, and pick a team you don’t like in order to be competitive year in, year out.

Non contract league. Pick a team from those available when you join (check the home page, and the chat box.) If you want a 2nd team, only one of your two teams can be a winning team in MLB in 1993. If you take a 2nd team, you may not trade players between your two teams. This is a boot-able offense.

2. How are players acquired?

You get all of the players on your roster in 1993 with 15 IP and 50 AB. In Season 2, and thereafter, a player must have 30 IP and 100 AB to be imported. Duplicates will be allowed during the first season, but not in subsequent import classes: a player belongs to the team where he had more AB or more IP.

In season 2, and thereafter, each owner can pick 1 player from their import class to keep; the rest go into the free agent pool for a draft and/or waiver claims.

ANY ISSUE ABOUT WHICH TEAM A PLAYER BELONGS ON MUST BE RAISED PRIOR TO THE FIRST GAME, OR THE RIGHT TO APPEAL IS WAIVED. Once a player “suits up” for a game, he belongs to that team.

3. Updating personnel:

Progressions: Unpredictable. Plateau range: 30 - 32

Stat changing: Every offseason, you can stat change any player that you want to the next season’s real stats, as long as he had 30 IP or 100 AB.

Once games start, if a player is caught having stat-switched to a year where the minimums are not met, the player (not the owner) will be removed from the league for the season, and will only return if imported. I make a distinction between an owner turning himself in before games start, and the Commissioner or another owner catching him during the season.

Trades: Yes, between the end of the World Series and game 140 of the following season. If done outside of that range, I will undo the trade (or waiver claim.)

Anyone can question the fairness of a trade, and forward a review request to the trade review committee. I will select the members of this committee, and majority rules. If for some reason there is a tie (as with an abstention), the Commissioner will break the tie. The Commissioner will oversee the performance of this committee. Requests to have trades reviewed must be made within 1 week or 20 games from the trade, whichever comes first.

Imports and Minimums: Imports must have at least 30 IP or 100 AB to be eligible, and if a player played for 2 teams during his first year of eligibility, he goes to the team where he had the most AB or IP.

Draft: The non-selected players in your team's import class go into the free agent pool. You must also trim your roster down to 26 by D-Day (date to be announced shortly after the World Series ends). The draft order will be based on PC’s impression of team strength, calculated once each team is down to 26 players. Teams that are unowned do not contribute players to this draft, nor do they make selections in this draft: a “bot” will be kept as pure as possible, so that the next owner has as unspoiled a team as is possible. Bots will be trimmed to league limits by Opening Day, so their cuts will be eligible for waiver claims. BEGINNING IN 1995, WAIVER CLAIMS WILL REPLACE THE DRAFT.

Waivers claims will begin with game 1.

To be clearer, waiver claims are the draft. All teams must be to roster limits by game 1 so that every team has an equal shot at all draftees from day 1.

4. League set up, number of games, rotation size, injury length, and roster size:

The league set up will be determined once we know how many teams will be in the league.

162 games, 5 man rotations, with the exception of the first year, which will be a 4 man rotation season. Injuries will be limited to 5 days for a position player and 8 days for a pitcher. Rosters will be 26/10.

5. Playoffs: Will be determined when we know how many teams are in the league.

As of this writing, the league contains 18 teams. We will have 2 9-team leagues, 162 games, with 1 interleague series every day.

The top 5 teams in each league will make the playoffs: 1 regular season champion, and 4 wild card teams, per league. The wild card teams will play best-of-3 series until 1 wild card team per league remains. This remaining wild card team will challenge the regular season champion in a best-of-7 series, and the winners of this series from each league will meet in the World Series, also best-of-7.

Rules about ties for a playoff spot:

A wild card team never hosts a series against a non-wild card team.

If teams tie for a playoff spot:
⇒ If both teams would be “in”, use head to head record as a tiebreaker. Run differential is the 2nd tie-breaker.
⇒ If one is in, the other is out, 1 game playoff (@ head 2 head winner)

MY BASIC EXPECTATIONS OF EACH OWNER:

⇒ Your commitment is season to season. When you join, you will be expected to actively run your team until the end of the season, which is when the regular season ends for non-playoff teams, or when your playoff team is eliminated. If you quit mid-season without my blessing, I will share this information with other commissioners.

⇒ Actively running your team means that you read messages once per day, meet all deadlines, and communicate any difficulties to the commissioner.

⇒ I will provide a minimum of 48 hours between a posting of a deadline, and the deadline. Ignorance of the deadline will not be an excuse for failing to meet the deadline.

⇒ If you will be away, and unable to get your messages, give the commissioner advance notice. Inactivity for ten (10) days, or repeated failure to meet deadlines, may result in your being booted from the league.

⇒ Every owner is expected to field a team (9 pitchers and 11 fielders) every game. Failure to do so, making the sims not run, results in a forfeit.

⇒ Read and be familiar with the rules immediately upon joining: it may affect your desire to be in the league, or your desire to pick a certain team.

Please keep all conversations clean
Please don't be rude to fellow owners
Please be active, if not active for 14 days you may be removed from the league

General rules:

Each offseason, you can switch a SP to RP, or a RP to a SP, but stamina will remain “as is.”. You can change it back the next offseason if you like, but no changes between first pitch and the last out of the World Series.
You can switch a player’s primary and secondary positions if they played 50% or more games THAT season at their secondary position, or at least 25% of their games for their career at their secondary position.
During an offseason, a player can be switched to the position they played most in their career, regardless of the requirements of General Rule #2.
You can switch a DH to his secondary position, as long as he has a fielding percentage.

Off season duties:

Season 1: Double stats of players with less than 30 IP or 100 AB.

Empty the free agent pool.

Unpredictable progression after world series. Plateau range: 30 - 32

Imports: 30 IP/100 AB minimum

Stat changes: unlimited with minimums of 30 IP and 100 AB. Any changes you wish to make must be done before "cut day". Draft order is determined by perceived team strength.

3) Cuts to 26 players. I will make them before waiver claims, if you have not made them by D-Day. I have the right to pick players I would like to draft if forced to make the choices for you. I will not take players the absence of which will force you to forfeit (i.e. prevent sims from running.)

Opening Day/Waivers

Elastic Clause: I reserve the right to create new rules as necessary to deal with problems as they arise.

Some leagues use fictional player progression. To learn more about how players progress, check the Player Potential page.
