Unearned/Earned Run Question

Unearned/Earned Run Question

Hi all:

https://www.pennantchase.com/lgBoxS..
I am asking about the fourth run charged to Tepez in Bot 8.

Here is the play-by-play:
Tepez pitching.
Comer reaches on error.
Sparrow bloop single.
Wise enters as a pinch runner at first.
Coleman ground ball. Comer out at home on the throw.
Stewart hard single between third and short.
Frost deep fly out.
Wise scores.

My thought process is that if there is no error, Comer makes the first out, Sparrow singles (at 1B), Coleman grounds out for the second out (Sparrow either at 1B or 2B), Stewart singles (if Sparrow is at 2B, cannot assume that he will score), and Frost flies out for the third out.

I tried looking up the rule and there isn't really anything pertaining to this specific situation. Just wondering about everyone's thoughts and whether they think this run should be earned or unearned.

Re: Unearned/Earned Run Question

Earned. I believe only Comer or someone running in place of Comer where the error was committed would be unearned. Since he was thrown out, everything that came after is earned.

Re: Re: Unearned/Earned Run Question

The official scorer is supposed to recreate the inning as if the error(s) and/or passed ball(s) never occurred. Sometimes it's obvious and sometimes it's left to their judgment. I'd agree with htennis on this one and call it unearned based on recreating the inning without the error. Who scores the run doesn't matter.

Re: Unearned/Earned Run Question

KRTYLER is right, but the official scorer is, according to MLB, supposed to determine if the third out would have occurred before run was scored. In this case, the batter who got on because of an error, was still the first out. So should be earned.

Yet, it also states an earned/unearned run is up to official scorers judgement, so could change from scorer to scorer, like the determination of an error in the first place. Classic…

Re: Re: Unearned/Earned Run Question

No run actually scored until the fly out, and that should have been the third out, so the run is unearned. I dont think judgement comes into play here.

As for PC, Guy has answered this a lot of times, the code definitely doesn't account for every unearned scenario.

Re: Unearned/Earned Run Question

How about this.

Lead off 2B error. - WP runner to 3B - BB - Fly Out Runner out at home tagging up - HBP. - HR. Those runs are all earned - the logic is you can’t get the same man out twice to count towards the three outs

in the original you got a different player out. So the runs are also earned. At least that’s How I would score it

Re: Re: Unearned/Earned Run Question

I agree with your example since at that point there would be two outs (error, fly out) and so then the HBP HR are earned.

Re: Unearned/Earned Run Question

I tried really hard for a few minutes to care about whether runs are earned or unearned and who they should be charged to, but I just couldn’t do it. What is making this interesting for you guys? I must know. Maybe I’m missing out on something important in life!! 😁

Re: Re: Unearned/Earned Run Question

What seems to be a bigger issue to me is how "walkoff" hits are treated by the sim. For example, a tie game in bottom of the 9th, bases loaded and a ball hit off the wall in CF...........in real life the batter is given a base hit and a game winning rbi. However the sim just might credit the batter with a game winning triple, 3 rbi and also 3 runners scoring.

NO - the Sim would give the triple, but only 1 run would score and 1 RBI

to Gus- Some of us simply enjoy discussing the permutations and oddities that occur in Baseball - the actual statistics are secondary in the SIM- but the complexities of the rules makes for good conversations and a better understanding of Baseball in general-

did you know that at one point it took 8 Balls to get a Walk?

Or that walks were once considered a hit in batting average?

Or that the reason there were so many Triples hit years ago was that the Parks were enormous or had no walls and if a ball got by an outfielder he would have to run so far to get it that triples were easy?

the Bad fielding percentages from the turn of the Century had very little to do with the fielders abilities and more to do with the almost useless gloves they had to use?

Re: Re: Unearned/Earned Run Question

Hi Gus! Sorry about this, just thought it was an interesting thought experiment, like a basic logic puzzle or something 😁
