Opener in Favorite Teams?

Opener in Favorite Teams?

I haven't played PC awhile but am really getting into a couple different Auto leagues.
I noticed there is an option to switch some pitchers roles. Has anyone used this to have an 'opener' for games? I'm thinking of doing it soon. with Joakim Soria. Thanks for all worthy input.

Re: Opener in Favorite Teams?

Yes, I will occasionally use "openers", you want to be careful how you use them, because at a max Stam of 40 pitches, you can burn up your bullpen FAST. But, they can work to your advantage with a deep bullpen, especially with a weak pitching rotation.

Re: Opener in Favorite Teams?

Jim he means using the change role option for pitchers who made both starts and relief appearances in the same season to convert a SP with less than 85 IP in favorite teams leagues. They can technically become SPs with 40 stamina as a result of using this method...

NOTE: It only works for pitchers who made at least one start AND one relief appearance EACH in the same season. Meaning unless you're using the 2019 Joakim Soria, this will NOT work for you bud...

Re: Re: Opener in Favorite Teams?

Ive used it with some success with MIA('96 Helling, but I use '96 Leiter as a long-man as well) , MIL ('14 Fiers and '18 Peralta..but the 2018 bullpen stack makes this possible , KCR ('72 Busby helps what is a very weak SP pool, no matter the year), SEA (I think '09 Bedard? all the DWAR that season is a great add) TB (the originators of the 'opener', their endless slew of solid rates by SP/RP in 2028 and 2019 make them one of the biggest threats around now) SDP (a way to keep a deep bullpen AND not lose say, a 1987 to needing say, a '98 Kevin Brown)...

9 in the pen now will probably trim to 6 as I need more bench...
Thanks for sharing your experience on this. I've always wanted to play around with starters more on PC- whether it is shorter rest (2 days!) or even when simming All Star Games as a commish. If a commish had this option you could sim a true ASG where starters give you 30 or so pitches each. I did it once but I had to change the pitch counts individually and then back. It was a cool result though.

Related question- so if I want my long reliever to directly follow will he or does the opener have to get knocked out?

I love when I get to play around like this on here, thanks Guy!

Re: Re: Opener in Favorite Teams?

If you run an ASG in a Sandbox, you can literally control every roster move, sub pitchers every batter or two, send subs in every inning. Transferring players over from a custom league to a Sandbox can be a pain, because an "All-Star Roster" isn't importable like the rest are..but that's the method to have complete control.

Re: Re: Opener in Favorite Teams?

Changing a RP to a SP caps his Stamina at 40. So depending on score at that point, your long-man may come in, or your Priority #1 RP (or highest priority RP not needing rest).

Who were you looking to use as an opener on this roster?

Sori-this is the team with Soria on it. Thinking of using him to open for Blue or Grove then have them follow in long relief- thus my previous question about order. I also took George Earnshaw (115) and converted him so even if it goes extras the rotation should not be used. Reggie Harris can go for 48 pitches so I may put him in long relief if I can assure he will follow depending on the match up. Bullpen should be fine no?

On the St Louis team I took Dick Hughes (48) and made him a SP. That league hasn't started yet. I may use 2 openers here!

Re: Re: Opener in Favorite Teams?

Did you switch him to a SP role AFTER the season started? Ive Never seen a converted RP have a Stamina below 40? Thats weird. Only explanation I can think of...

Re: Opener in Favorite Teams?

To my knowledge if the reliever who is available to be converted, and his stamina is below 40, well once converted to a starter, he will carry is lower stamina...

example: NY Yankees Chad Green 2017, his stamina = 33

Re: Re: Opener in Favorite Teams?

I just noticed I can convert Lefty Grove to RP so I can use Soria to open for him.
This is also gonna be great for post season play!

Re: Opener in Favorite Teams?

Soria? Yes.

Finished pitching staff showing stamina for all. I'm going to run this and post results.

I have the openers going past their pitch count (23) is this a good idea? Like going hitter to hitter but I don't want them getting killed!

Opener Results for Soria & Hendricks-

I'm going to use Hendricks as a regular opener-he gave me length and wasn't scored upon. I did set him for going past his pitch count to see if that would happen so the experiment was successful... a Hendricks(23+)/Soria (23)/Reggie Harris (48) start should get me to the main bullpen in great shape. Also trying this in another league as it's always fun when it works.

Re: Opener in Favorite Teams?

Not sure how I feel about this. Basically, any RP that a team decided to have start a game (like Hendricks, who started 2) we can now use to start a game. So something PC doesn’t allow (all bullpen games) is now allowed. I do get it, MLB teams have been experimenting with it. In that case, we should just be able to start any RP. And no, I don’t like that, not in a sim where only stats affect outcomes. In fav teams leagues, this seems to give a big advantage to using 2019 bullpens, since that’s mostly when it has been done. Previous pitchers who really did start games (and went 5 innings) I get being able to change to, although they are using phony stats that included short relief appearances. Like I said, not sure how I feel about this. I understand it but think I’m against it. Sim isn’t same as real in every way. Here, relievers dominate much more than starters do and being able to use all relievers doesn’t seem right.

Re: Re: Opener in Favorite Teams?

You already know my feelings, I think it's a fair compromise.

Hear me out..

Its only available in Fave Teams, and I will partially agree with Yankee in that to allow all-RP games across most formats would be crap.

BUT,

in having vast experience in Fave Teams (my PC specialty, I don't claim to be an expert in any other plausible Auto League format) and the largely popular BOTB leagues since both of their inceptions, I've played as all 30 teams many times now...as Yankee mentioned, and I will add, 2019, and some 2018 and 2017 mixed in, I will concede, that yes, you can stack up to a degree this way with certain teams, Dodgers, Indians, Astros, Nats and Rays (of course) come to mind.. And its mainly 1 SP/RP on each staff that immediately triggers the thought. 3 of those 5 are probably top 6 or 7 clubs chosen across All Fave Team-Autos. They are certainly always among the Top 10 in any of our many BOTB-Team Drafts.

But, Yankee, youve also saw that in a vacuum like Best of the Rest-BYOT, which you and I have both been members of for 9 seasons now (minus 2019, yes) that certain clubs have numerous disadvantages, cripes, the Rays have been #12 of 12 in preseason power rank all 9 seasons now. The Marlins have made the playoffs in our 12 (hardest to use in Fave Teams Autos) team League once in 9 seasons, same for the White Sox, Rockies (I may be leaving another team out without peeking)...and it's why we enjoy the plus player and upgrade features of the BOTB leagues also, because all teams aren't created equal.

Look at the 2019 Marlins, sandbox them, due to the way MLB pitchers are now used, they have virtually NO viable starting pitchers, Miami also has the triple-edged sword (unlike even a MIL or KCR) of having virtually next to NO uber-dominant RP seasons (even when you make any SP under 85 IP a RP), and their top DWAR at ANY position barely exceeds 2.0 (Kotsay '98, and without Piazza for 14G, you have no real reason to ever choose this year (maybe Mantei and Darensbourg, but they pale in comparison to truly DOMINANT RP seasons from others) ....

Its called 'Favorite Teams', not 'Favorite Teams except if you're a Marlins fan, in that case, piss off'.. The weakest teams benefit most from it (as I stated above, I use Fiers and Peralta w MIL a lot, I have 3 teams to go on my personal quest for a ring w all 30 clubs) and the stronger teams don't benefit to such a great deal that its plain unfair, so I don't see the harm...

Re: Opener in Favorite Teams?

Its called 'Favorite Teams', not ‘you have same odds to win with any team’, nor should it be. Rays are PC rated low because of their awful hitting but they win now, right, aided by dwar. If this was meant to be the great equalizer it would only be allowed for the ‘bad’ teams. It’s not. Anyway, I just don’t like the all RP games in a sim. I understand the reasoning is that MLB teams are doing it.
