Defensive replacements

Recently noticed some defensive replacements that I am not certain are legit, i.e. sub in a def repl that has better fielding avg but poorer WAR. This got me thinking: does the game assess whether a defensive replacement is actually an improvement, or, does it just look at my Def Replace settings? Meaning, if player A is "can be replaced" and player B is "use as Def Repl" then it assumes I prefer B to A and makes the switch when I have a specified lead.

I have to check the logic but it’s possible it might ignore the setting if there’s no advantage in any category (fld, war or arm). But if any of those are better it will definitely go by your settings.

These Defensive Replacements, were they Strictly that, or guys that were inserted as Defensive Replacements after a starting player was pinch hit for by a guy that does not play the position of the guy he hit for?

If it's the latter, then the SIM pulls from your bench the best you have at the needed position, or at a position where an already in use Fielder could move to the player who was pinch hit for's slot, and the bench player fills the vacated spot.

In other words your 2B gets PH for by an OF/DH - at the end of the inning if the only bench guy who plays IF is a 3B/SS but your 3B also has IF eligibility, it should move the player currently at 3B to 2B and have the Bench guy play 3B

At least that would be optimal

OK, this is all useful. So which is the more valuable stat to evaluate for Defensive replacements: WAR or Fielding Avg? I am leaning toward Fielding Avg but only because it leads to errors, which are obvious, whereas who knows whether a weaker WAR fielder "allowed" a hit that a stronger WAR fielder would have saved? In any event, I like being able to make this decision and choose which one to "play" as my DR.

Fielding % or DWar - interesting question, but I think its actually an GOOD question

If a 3B has a .965 Fielding % he will potentially make an error on 35 out of 1000 balls hit to him.

If a 3B has a +2.66 DWar he has a 7 maybe 8% chance to turn a HIT into an out -and DWar does not effect Fielding % ( at least I don't think it does)

So Fielding % only effects OUTS While DWar only effects HITS??

Fielding % determines whether a play is an out or an error - dWAR determines whether a play is an out or a hit.

I assume once dwar turns a hit into an out there's still a chance that out is an error, so both might come into play.

I'd say if the FLD is close, I'd lean towards dwar. If one guy has a 1000 FLD and one has a 950 FLD, and plays a position that gets a lot of balls (SS, CF), I'd say that FLD is pretty important.

See that WOULD be a great point Yankee, but in PC fielders don't make errors on hits -a hit is a hit, period, there is never a throwing error after a hit, only on a fielded ball.

So my thought is Fielding % is more important, because an infielder sees FAR many more balls hit to them that are outs, which they CAN make an error on, than Hits, which they can take away.

But until DWar plays are shown as a separate play such as 'Wicked line drive, great diving catch robs him of a hit" it's hard to see how often they occur.

By the way, that's another thing about Surprise bunting-

I believe that it ALWAYS advances a base runner, either the bunter is safe or out - but the runner, moves up to 3rd or 2nd

You only "bunt too hard" on a Sacrifice attempt taking out the lead man,

So that makes the surprise bunt an even MORE powerful weapon, too powerful actually

Ok, so now I am seeing lead runners cut down on Surprise bunt attempts, was I just missing it before??

Always happened that lead runners can be cut down; one of the few downsides to the surprise bunt.
