Switching Positions in MLB

Switching Positions in MLB

Does anyone know of a player who has gone from 1b to Right Field or Left Field? Plenty have transitioned from the OF to 1b, but I can't think of any who started at 1b and, then, played OF.

Catcher to other positions has been done. Biggio to 2b, Brandon Inge played C and CF in the same season, B.J. Surhoff started as a C and ended as an OF (with a 3b stop in between).

Does anyone know of a C who transitioned to full-time CF?

Re: Switching Positions in MLB

Sol I don't have an answer right away for C to OF but I have one for 1B to OF. Cody Bellinger of the dodgers started mostly at 1B in his rookie year 2017 as well as 2018 (well, with some OF time... But mostly 1B). And this year he was almost entirely OF with some 1B time as well (the roles reversed)

Re: Re: Switching Positions in MLB

Dale Murphy came up as a Catcher and moved to CF

also Raul Ibanez moved to OF from catcher

Re: Switching Positions in MLB

Thank you, skooler and SCM.

Bellinger and Murphy are both certainly proof positive that those position switches can be very successful.

Turns out, Dale Murphy was a multiple time Gold Glove winner in CF .

Re: Re: Switching Positions in MLB

darin erstad, mainly played 1b his first couple of season before becoming a gold glover at centerfield...

The other way around, Gary Carter played is first couple of season mainly in the outfield for the Expos, Barry Foote was there main man and was prefered to Carter for being their long term catcher, Foote was considered to be the next Johnny Bench, plan derailed and Gary Carter became the b plan, an HOF b plan...as close as a next Johnny Bench can be...
