Baffled by losses

Baffled by losses

ATG league, with Verlander top of rotation. I was advised to use his 2019 stats "that's one of the greatest stat lines for a SP in all of PC"
Well, he's only 8-7 with a 4.37 era after 19 starts. Not too mention, my team ( excellent roster as a whole), is losing to inferior opponents, including being swept by a filler team without a player ranked above 10!! 2 of those losses were against Verlander and my #2! How could Verlander lose to, and keep losing to lesser teams? I have as much talent as the best, and I'm barely playing 500. This isnt fun anymore :(

Re: Baffled by losses

In Pennant Chase Players have average years, Good years and Bad years- Just like in real life, sometimes they have really bad luck on top of having a bad year - It does stink when it's your ACE but it can happen.

Trade him and he will of course snap out of it.

Re: Re: Baffled by losses

Looks like a silid team w/adaquate defense - his next 12-13 starts could be lights-out. Some times excrement occurs.....

Re: Baffled by losses

Though yout hitters look solid, your defense is very weak. Your outfield, 3rd base and 1st base defense needs to be up graded. Catching is weak as well. Your D +/- is only 38 so far, your roster has 5 players with a negative DWAR.
I have discovered that having a,+ DWAR player that is a good hitter is better than a negative DWAR player that is a great hitter.
I try to have no more than 1 Negative DWAR player on my team if I have too and then that person will only DH
Also, during the auto league draft it is pitching pitching, pitching unless there is something glaringly wrong that I need to address.
Hope this helps.

Re: Re: Baffled by losses

Thanks. I don't think my D has cost me more than......maybe 2 games the most. My **** is being swept by a filler team, with my top 2 SPs

Re: Baffled by losses

If your SPs aren't performing, give them an early hook. Let the bullpen take over the games before too much damage is done.

You also have a boost on for LHB. Boosts work both ways: your lefties will bash more, but other teams stacked with southpaws also get the advantage. Thus, why your pitchers will likely have higher ERAs than otherwise.

I usually stick to "no effect" for both sides of the plate, regardless of my lineup. Pitching and defense are too important; I don't want to give the longball hitters an even bigger edge.

Re: Baffled by losses

I would also change Chipper Jones to his 2008 Season .364 BA - a gain in OBP - a slight drop off in OPS - but a BIG +1.13 Dwar at 3B right now he's a NEGATIVE .089 DWar - Can't afford a negative DWar at the Hot corner, just can't allow it!

you also need to DH Williams and trade or Bench Klein if possible, get those Plus Defenders into your outfield

Re: Baffled by losses

I strongly agree with Sincity. Klein is a negative 9 on Defense, William's a negative 4, Chipper a negative 2 and Foxx a negative 1. Looking at the team in front of you, they only have 2 negative defense of numbers a negative 1 and 3 in the outfield. Brett is a plus 9 at 3rd vs your negative 2 with Chipper. William's needs to DH and trade Klein plus a 1st baseman. Defense and pitching win. Dont get sucked into big sluggers with bad DWAR.

Re: Baffled by losses

Verlander giving up tons of hits so besides random luck, has to be defense and stadium.

However, recent game he gave up 14 hits, just 1 was because of defense, and lots of singles. Pretty fluky I think. Hitter friendly league, most team ERA are over 4, but other aces are pitching better for sure. Walsh and Scherzer on your team are doing much better, yet clearly are worse in real stats. I think it’s just bad luck.

Re: Re: Baffled by losses

One last thought- though it stinks losing to a " Filler" team, every team is going to have ups and downs- sometimes you are simply due to lose, in all fairness I would MUCH rather lose to a sucky team than one I am chasing....

Re: Baffled by losses

He's pitched in that league for 11 seasons now... and his career ERA is 4.12. That seems pretty high, but I guess it's just a high scoring league?

Also, out of the 11 seasons of that league, this current season is his lowest DICE - tied with Pedro for the league lead. So a lot of it is attributable to bad luck... in a high scoring league.

But I agree with the others on defense. A +1D or -1D here and there in the box score really adds up over the course of the season.

Re: Re: Baffled by losses

Just on a side note I researched Klein's 9 Negative DWar plays to show you HOW much difference it makes

His bad Defense has allowed 1) Game winning Triple,

1) Single driving in a run, with 2 outs and the next batter drove in 2 more that's 3 runs more

1) 2 run Single

1) Double

5) Singles

Trust me it's MORE than 2 games and that's just Klein!

BTW, you must have switched Seasons with Chipper at one Point- he got a Positive Dwar play and you can't do that with a negative Dwar rating.... I was wondering why that 2008 season wasn't the one in use, made no sense at all. Since you switched him, he has had 3 negative Dwar plays ...

Re: Baffled by losses

2019 Verlander just showed up on PC. The other seasons you see are different Verlander years.

Re: Re: Baffled by losses

Having a solid defensive CF would greatly help (+1.5 Dwar and above)... as of now your CF only saved 8 would be base hits.... a good Defensive CF will save up from 40 to 50 a season... A guy like Ichiro should be put in there... The base hits saved will compensate lower offensive production he will offer.

you should remove Klein, Put Ichiro in CF and Speaker in RF...

As suggested... Chipper Jones should also be switched to is better defensive season... his offensive numbers are still very good...

This will give you an additional +5.0 d war increase, this is massive... this will strongly help you pitching...

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to optimized pitching stats, if defense is average / below average and also ball park dimensions modified to hitters advantage...

Re: Re: Baffled by losses

I know what you're feeling, but just remind yourself, the fun is in the pursuit of winning... you're going to win some and lose more than you win... and good players are going to have bad seasons... I built the site and still get pissed at it many times. :)

Yeah some things to keep in mind... even the best teams get swept by the worst teams over the course of a 162 game season. A 10 rank doesn't mean the player's stats are 90% worse than a 100 rank, it just means relatively they are not the best players in the league. But they are still going to win games.

In ATGs, because the lineups are so loaded, it can be pretty random which "ace" winds up as the best one(s) for any given ATG season. You have a pretty solid ATG team in that league, but I can promise there are 4-5 others just as good because there are that many good players to go around, so your odds of getting into the playoffs are no better than those other teams, a lot will boil down to luck of the "dice roll" so to speak.

I myself have not quite figured out how to manage dWAR either, but I just had an ATG get swept in the first round and we lost almost every game due to defense - errors and negative dwar plays... so it definitely matters...

Re: Baffled by losses

Shut out by Bert Bleeping Blylevon and another filler team. Why do I continue to even care? So sickening

Re: Re: Baffled by losses

I've found that it's better to not obsess over individual games and be concerned with the long term results. I watch practically every Dodger game each season, and I've seen some guys pitch lights-out against them who are batting practice for the rest of the league - it just happens.

Re: Baffled by losses

you just won 5 in a row and 7 out of 8 before that game, things are going well.

Re: Baffled by losses

Despite my negativity, and ****ing, I appreciate everyone's input

Re: Baffled by losses

You’ve got 70 games left in that season... lots of time. And now you’re leading the WC. Like others have said, you can’t get wound up about every game in the sport of baseball, and I always say on PC if you can’t accept losing your share of times, you won’t last long here. But if you’re up for the continual challenge, it makes the times you do win your league so much better. And don’t be surprised if some of your best teams fail and some of your mediocre teams go all the way, that’s just baseball sometimes.

Re: Re: Baffled by losses

This is the 100th recorded case of PC Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.

Re: Baffled by losses

I once had a 108 win team that dominated in the playoffs start out 0-11. It was Daily Draft and I was confident in the team and they couldn't buy a win. Then they went 108-43 the rest of the way. It happens.

Re: Baffled by losses

Hang in there

Re: Re: Baffled by losses

I once had a team start 19-31 and then go on to win the World Series!

No... that was real life, last year.

Can't wait for baseball to start up again!!!

Re: Baffled by losses

Since my rant, I've gone 43-9, including 2 seperate 10 game win streaks. I was 8 games back, but I am now 2 games ahead. I have 96 wins with 12 to go. And Verlander, who at the time of rant, was it 8-7, is now 19-8. My team actually responded!!

Re: Re: Baffled by losses

Your team getting hot at right time. You moved to top of league, well deserved
