Báez/Pirates

Báez/Pirates

Re: Báez/Pirates

That's crazy. I think they need a new first baseman.

Re: Báez/Pirates

el mago strikes again. I have never seen that before and most likely never again. Just a wow moment.

Re: Re: Báez/Pirates

Despite his questionable ability to drive walks and strike out, Baez is still a great and fun player to watch as a Cubs fan.

Re: Báez/Pirates

Baez doesn't deserve any credit... come on...
just the Pirates 1B failed an IQ test on this one....

Re: Báez/Pirates

I had a proud dad moment this morning because I showed the clip to my 6th grader who said, "Why didn't he just run and step on 1B?"
He needs to be benched for that because that was a horrendous mental error. Also, he never really ran fast after Baez. If he would have hustled, he could have tagged him out before throwing the ball to the catcher. I am still in shock that a little league play like that happened in the big leagues.

Re: Báez/Pirates

So I just watched the video

And umm, welp, that was...... Just, wow

*Scratches head*

I got nothing. Still trying to understand what the hell happened there 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Re: Re: Báez/Pirates

I disagree with the sentiment that Baez deserves no credit - he absolutely deserves credit. His hustle and awareness is what led to the confusion of the first baseman and really the whole team.
It's also an example of why we teach kids to take the ball out of their glove when chasing someone in a rundown - that little transfer was the difference (along with the 1b general lack of hustle). The whole team looked listless on that play - look at the effort by the second baseman and the shortstop on both of those throws.

Re: Báez/Pirates

There is 2 outs.... Baez is just a force out and the inning is over... Am I missing something?

That runner on 2nd is meaningless, he won't score once Baez is out.... just a lack of baseball IQ by the Pirates 1B on top of a lack of effort / hustle / care for the game on is part...

This is just a good old beer league move to make the defender laugh a bit and force him to tag the bag instead...

Re: Báez/Pirates

The fact that there were two overthrows after the huge mental error / lack of hustle makes this the most boneheaded play I can think of. The catcher who couldn't tag Bregman out to end the game moves into second place.

Re: Re: Báez/Pirates

No doubt it's a terrible play by the Pirates. The funny part is that at any point he could have just stopped and turned around and walked over to first base. The runner meant nothing - even if he slid across home plate. But it's why we tell people to hustle because that little bit of hustle and pressure that Baez created made for a memorable play.
