Will sim allow this

Will sim allow this

His bullpen is going to get worn out but will the sim let you proceed with no starters ? This would really change the way you approach a build with the Rays . https://www.pennantchase.com/lgRost..

Re: Will sim allow this

I have no clue. There are 2 possibilities, either the game engine won't allow it or the HAL9000 unit will select a RP to start based on endurance? It would only take a few starts and your bullpen would be fried. As Arte Johnson used to say on Laugh In - "Verrrry interesting, but stupid !!"

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

Couldn't have said it better myself if I hadn't already in the original post . Dont't try this at home kids , this is a professional here , lol . Going to be Interesting to see how this shakes out . I predict chaos !!

Re: Will sim allow this

Since they're all RP they only need 1 day of rest between appearances right? I think you could make this work without tiring out the whole pen everyday if you added a few more 40-50 stamina RPs in there. Definitely interested to see if it works lol.

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

Ok - I'm going to give this a shot and see how it works. Here's my Toronto No SP build:

https://www.pennantchase.com/lgRost..

The league has just filled and will start later this evening. I wasn't sure how to set the bullpen - but I'm open to suggestions. The 1st 3 in my BP rank are the 3 highest pitch count guys.

I decided to use Toronto because their SP situation is not ideal to begin with. Even the "Good" starters don't sim well.

Re: Will sim allow this

The team referenced at the beginning of the post (an Angels build) and my Blue Jays No SP's are both in the same league with games starting tonight (June 6) at 6:05pm.

Re: Will sim allow this

@gbacci is this a bug introduced with the new all hands on deck game 7 feature or has this always been the case? i just happen to know that on the draft team page it specifically says lineups must have 12 position players, 5 sp and 5 rp. my team has been removed several times when i forget to draft 12 position players. but its ok to have all rp and not meet the 5 sp criteria now?

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

i'm also in that league and i noticed that tampa bay roster is all rp as well, so that's 3 teams without sp in this league

Re: Will sim allow this

Yea I decided to try it with the rays in the same league, for science

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

so the angels team only has 4 pitchers that are out for 1 day each for rest next game and still have 9 other pitchers. so this strategy seems to be far superior than using starting pitchers who have to rest 4 games. plus rp's usually cost less war and generally have better stats than sp's as well.

Re: Will sim allow this

Yea the results after the first day look promising. This might be a loophole that gbacci needs to plug!

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

Let's see what happens when you give up 10 or more runs in a game followed by a couple of extra inning games . It's only game 1 ,Tuffy Rhodes ring a bell to anyone ? What's really pathetic is I have 3 relievers out because my stater got shelled . Now I wonder if this would work in a regular auto league . You're forced to pick 5 starters but you could pick up 5 more rp's off waivers and demote your starters to the minors . One more thing to think about , how will more appearances affect their injury chances ? Either way this is going to be an interesting experiment .

Re: Will sim allow this

@Mrbubbles1967 tuffy rhodes is a blast from the past! 3 homers on opening day i believe? i was in an auction fantasy league at the time, we did the draft a couple weeks into the season due to scheduling conflicts. one of the owners spent a good chunk on him after his hot start!! i believe he had a pretty big run in japan?

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

He finished the season with 8 homers and 19 rbi . He did go on to have a pretty good career in Japan hitting 464 homers .

Re: Will sim allow this

I think the page you are thinking of is the Daily Draft page - in that draft, the system will start drafting for you if you don't draft 5 SPs.. The Budget draft has always been more flexible, but yes it demands 11 positional because that allows for some subs for injuries, etc. That said, I don't think this is going to work great in the long run when the lousy RPs on the roster have to start playing more. I am curious how it pans out.

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

Guy, besides wondering how it pans out, isn’t this not something you want happening? Or you are going to leave it as allowed going forward?

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

i'm providing a screenshot of the auto league favorite teams war draft screen so that you can see it says to have 5sp and 5rp. i just think this should be updated to be 10 pitchers if 5sp is not really mandatory.

Re: Will sim allow this

Ah okay. It does say 5 SP. it’s been a while since I did one of those drafts. In that case it should be fixed and not allowed.

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

I had this in my Inbox this morning:

From: gbacci (No team) block user

Due to your lack of starting pitchers on your roster, a SP was promoted from the minors or added via free agency.

A scrub was added and started game 2. I dropped him, but I have a funny feeling that SP's are going to keep being added all season.

I'm perfectly fine with this NOT being allowed and 5 SP's being enforced somehow.

Re: Will sim allow this

Same here. I thought it was odd that before game 1 the sim auto demoted someone from my roster so I only had 25 players in the majors. Then before game 2 it automatically added a crappy SP from free agency to fill that spot. Looks like it will repeat this process until the starting rotation is full.

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

Okay, I knew that happened for other auto leagues I just wasn’t sure if it would happen for budget leagues. And that’s probably why I didn’t bother with the booting, because booting just makes the league take that much longer to fill up, but that’s a rough way to learn the lesson of not following the rules.

Re: Will sim allow this

I saw the handwriting on the wall and picked up the best of the SP's in free agents. I'll try to at least salvage something out of this.

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

In another interesting twist, the Angels no-SP team got FA SP Allard to pitch game 2 - and he also started game 3 !!

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

i'm curious is hal9000 a technical name of the engine or just a made up nickname?

Re: Will sim allow this

imagine if SP Allard starts every game since that is their only starter, lol

Re: Will sim allow this

Hal 9000 was the name of the computer from the movie 2001 Space Odyssey , I'm sorry Dave , that's all I'm allowed to say . Funny fact , Kubrick named it HAL because it was one letter less than IBM .

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

Nice fun fact! That’s much better than if he had gone one letter more and ended up with JCN lol

Re: Will sim allow this

It would appear that bodell82 has the right answer. After filling his roster to capacity, SP's are no longer being added and HAL is selecting RP's to start games. For the Angels, Allard has started 3 of the last 4 games with FA SP Eckersley pitching the other. The Angels are well below the roster max.

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

Part of this issue is I just took every available SP left in the FA pool and threw them in my minors. I mean if this whole season is just an experiment, might as well help it along.

Re: Will sim allow this

Poor half of the owners who thought they joined a normal league!

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

What I'd like to know is how his real sp's don't have to rest 3 or 4 days . I just looked at the schedule and eck is slated to start back to back ?

Re: Will sim allow this

My guess is that because Eck and Allard are the only 2 SPs on the roster, that the SIM wants to start an SP. Eck started game 4 of the season, then Allard started game 5, and then Eck started game 6 even though he needed rest. He was the most rested SP on the roster, so the SIM put him in, even though he was tired. I presume he gets a stat penalty for that, so probably not a great idea to have just 1 or 2 SPs who the SIM will keep sending out there needing rest. Recipe for disaster.

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

Well Rev, fortunately i scooped up a rotation early on. Seems like Bodell cracked the code though. Note on Eckersley - he stated 1 game for TB and was cut, then added by the sim to Cali.

Re: Will sim allow this

Isn't the ability to play DE's as LB in football league the same as this. I am in a league where the perennial top 2 teams only draft two LBers but draft 5 DE's. IMO this is an attempt to skew the stats to artificially manipulate the defensive sim. Is this something that is being looked at to resolve?

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

In my opinion that one fits real life better. The line between DE and LB is very blurry in today's NFL. Are Micah Parsons, Myles Garrett, Aidan Hutchinson, Will Anderson Jr, etc considered DE or LB? It depends on if their teams run a 3-4 or a 4-3. All of them are pooled together as Edge Rushers in my book. Ultimately, as you might have noticed in the Football sim, if you have all time great individual defensive players they will dominate regardless of position.

Re: Will sim allow this

Well, bodell didn't crack any code, someone else snatched up all the SPs as an experiment, which wouldn't be a normal occurrence. Nornally, these teams would be forced to have SPs from the FA pool. That said, bodell is also 2-4 and I don't think it's going to get better. I was reminded there is some logic in there such that if RPs get overused as the season goes, they get worse - this was from the days of people yanking SPs early and putting some stud RP in the long relief role - most teams won't get anywhere near the "overuse" issue, it's really only if you game it such that the same guy is coming in all the time, but in the case of not having any SPs, I suspect that team will eventually incur some penalties.

What I am really baffled by is the Cali team having two SPs and the one SP dropping to zero days off needed. I am trying to figure out why and where that is happening. (Okay, think I figured that out.)

Re: Will sim allow this

Yes, it seems like having an all reliever team could never be a real issue because it’s only possible with an accomplice to pick up all the free agent SPs.

Also the real hack might be a variation of what is going on with the Angels - you could roster only one stud SP and have him start every game!

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

Yes, the one SP stud every game should not work, I think I figured out the tiny glitch that was resetting the days off - it actually would have stopped working on it's own, but I can fix the glitch regardless.

Re: Will sim allow this

‘I was reminded there is some logic in there such that if RPs get overused as the season goes, they get worse’

What is the threshold here? Of course if my bullpen is great and my SPs aren’t I’m going to pull them early. I’ve even purposely used pitchers with less stamina to make more use of my bullpen. While I agree in real life overuse of pen would affect them, had no idea this was going on here. Feels like my great RPs always magically start struggling midseason, is this why? Or is the threshold so high that it’s likely not impacting me? I’ve been internally complaining about my RPs for a long time, and sometimes externally in league or to Guy. I would hate to think this is affecting us all, but maybe it isn’t.

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

No, the thresholds are quite large, you essentially have to be on pace for 175+ innings, and it wouldn't even start until 1/2 through, so if you had over 87 IPs for a RP at mid season.

Re: Will sim allow this

@gbacci - Does that threshold also apply to an SP who is set as the long reliever? Or only to true RPs?

Re: Will sim allow this

My top relievers who have high stamina regularly hit 150. It’s just a scary thought to know there was a hidden limit.

A nice solution would be to limit pitch count advancement on progressions. As a commish I know what a pain it is to create relievers, making sure their pitch count starts extremely low so that it doesn’t go too far past 30 by the time they finish advancing.

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

At least we got a great board thread out of this !! 😉😉😉😎😎😎

Re: Will sim allow this

@bodell82 no, this was only to stop those who were pushing their best RPs to 180+ innings with scammy tactics. @yankeebb another thing to keep in mind is, auto leagues only - on the rare case I do anything like this it's almost always because of Auto Leagues, custom leagues are free to do what they want and they have commissioners to control things.

Re: Re: Will sim allow this

I have 1 question 1) How is HAL 1 letter less than IBM?? What's that nonsense?

Re: Will sim allow this

Each letter is one less , if you still don't understand , there is a show called Sesame Street that could better explain it lol .

Re: Will sim allow this

@SinCityMarauder It took me longer than I'd like to admit but...
One letter more than A - B
One letter less than B - A
Therefore HAL is "One Letter Less" than IBM:
I → H
B → A
M → L
