Charley Hustle

Charley Hustle

RIP Pete. I saw you play a lot of baseball.

Re: Charley Hustle

Love him or hate him , you can't say you weren't entertained. I remember back in the early 70's there was only the Saturday game of the week and the only highlights you got were from This week in baseball. Even so , when you saw Pete , you knew he was a different kind of player.

Re: Re: Charley Hustle

I am 61 now. Many of my childhood memories are being brought up again as some of these players pass on. Pete is definitely one.
There are worse human beings in the HOF. Of all the players omitted from the Hall in my opinion Pete should be there.

Re: Charley Hustle

I wore #14 in sports because of Pete. I grew up in the 70s - 80s he was one of the biggest stars in baseball.

Hall of Fame: FAME being short for Famous! It is not the Hall of Morals.
If you're discussing a sport in history and can't finish the story without mentioning the key athlete's name, it generally doesn't significantly impact your credibility as long as you're accurately describing the sport.

Re: Re: Charley Hustle

Hall of Fame or not , Pete doesn't need a plaque to convince me he wasn't one of the best. We all saw what we saw and the numbers don't lie. Unfortunately , he knew the rules and chose to ignore them. I'm willing to bet this thread gets a lot of responses , no pun intended.

Re: Charley Hustle

David Schoenfield, ESPN Senior Writer summed it up pretty well: Along the way, he was underrated and overrated and then underrated again.
He came up as a rookie when I was 11 years old was kind of a role model for a kid playing Little League baseball in the early 60's for how to play the game all-out. Later in life, as a Dodger fan I respected him, but hated the Reds - who were Division rivals in the hard fought 70's. I always managed to go out to the Ravine for at least 1 game of any series vs the Reds and saw Rose play many a time. It's unfortunate how his career and life ended up - but he could only blame himself. Gambling is the "Third Rail" of baseball and he touched it.

Re: Re: Charley Hustle

2 months ago my mother died,B ut yesterday was almost as bad, First thing I see when I went online was that Dikembe died of brain cancer. Didn't even know he had it , then 2 hrs later the news aout Pete, Thats the thing that sucks aout getting old is that eventually everone you care about passes on. Enjoy the people you love while they are here , let them know before it's too late.

Re: Charley Hustle

Also, on a side note, on the same day as Rose, Kris Kristofferson passed away.

Re: Re: Charley Hustle

And I'll just say this about the HOF - if you gambled, and got caught, you were banned. It doesn't matter what ANY of us think, that's just the way that it is - end of discussion. Our opinions don't matter.

Re: Re: Charley Hustle

I think the Shiek meant to say that nobodies opinion matters, because its just not up for debate, No one ever banned for betting on Baseball has ever been reinstated.

Denny McClain was suspended, but didn't bet on Baseball, same with Leo Derocher.

It's a hard and fast rule.

Re: Re: Charley Hustle

If this year's Reds team had had the prime Pete Rose (or even not so prime), they would have won 15 or 20 more games. The '24 Reds didn't know what it takes to win.

Pete could talk baseball with the best of them, and if he hadn't messed up, he would have had a great post-career career as a commentator on baseball.

Here's a quote I read earlier today:

Later in life, Rose said his one regret in life was betting on the games.

“There’s only one thing I would change if I had to live it all over again … I would obviously turn my life around and not bet on baseball,” Rose told the Cincinnati Enquirer. “Having said that, I feel like I’ve been a pretty good citizen.”

“You never read about me being in a bar after hours, beating up my wife, or getting into a fight with a fan and I was as gracious to everyone as I could be,”

The Reds broadcast used to do a post-game interview "Star of the Game." As players' salaries started to rise in the 70's, the enticement of a free suit, or a free meal was not enough to get most players to come out for the interview. Pete would always come out, and he always gave an informative and entertaining interview. He loved baseball when, for many of his contemporaries, baseball was just a paycheck. I hope St. Peter welcomes him into heaven. He has suffered for his misdeeds.

Re: Charley Hustle

Of course Rose's on-field play merits HoF, and of course there are morally worse people in the Hall.

But this was the deal he made. He voluntarily signed an agreement banning him from baseball (which included an HoF ban) as part of a compromise/larger agreement with MLB. The fact that he's not in is simply the consequence of the agreement he signed.

However, he signed a lifetime ban, not a forever ban, and now his lifetime is over. So he could certainly be considered for induction now.

Re: Re: Charley Hustle

Kris Kristofferson died on the 28th , looks like Willie is the lone Highwayman left. Speaking of Pete being a great commentator here is a great clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqR..

Re: Charley Hustle

@Arlo:
The following is taken from the Willie Mays biography on the Baseball Reference site:

That fall he accepted a 10-year deal to do public-relations work for Bally’s Casino in Atlantic City, to greet people and play golf, things he had done at the Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas for years. According to Mays, his agreement prohibited him from gambling within 100 miles of Bally’s. Nevertheless, Commissioner Bowie Kuhn prohibited Mays and Yankees great Mickey Mantle, who had a similar job, from holding salaried positions with major-league clubs. While a number of owners, including the Yankees’ George Steinbrenner and the Pirates’ John Galbreath, had connections with horse racing, and despite the fact that Atlantic City did not (and does not) allow sports wagering, Kuhn forced two of the greatest names in baseball history to sever their ties with the game. ...

In March 1985, shortly after being named commissioner, Peter Ueberroth reinstated Mantle and Mays, saying, “They are two of the most beloved and admired athletes in the country today, and they belong in baseball.”

Re: Re: Charley Hustle

The rule was amended to keep Rose out. Yes he was wrong and yes it's a rule. Too bad they didn't make some other moral rules to keep players out. The hall would be more than half the size.
The discussion isn't wether or not to circumvent the rule and let him in. It's wether or not he deserves to be in. The player with all his credentials and most hits ever at the top,has the numbers to be in. Banned from the game. Yea. Banned from the Hall? This is a problem with our world. A lack or mercy and grace.
Too bad he couldnt have a plaque with his achievements and a the bottom the phrase "banned from the game for gambling".
It's a sad story for sure.

Re: Charley Hustle

Pete Rose, its also a dude in its 30's engaging in a love affair with a 14 years old teenager... He tought she was 16 he said. WTF is that ?

And then settle off court. Wonder why ?

What a clown he was.

So many people ignoring this about Rose today ...

Nobody talking about this vomiting situation ? Why ? Its part of Pete Rose story!!

I can pass on the gambling thing ! But not on this !

A great ball player, but a very small human. Absolutely No Hall of Fame for this despicable garbage...

For me, Pete Rose is only some baseball stats numbers...
